http://gamingfront.net/news/247/psn-set-to-offer-full-games-for-3999/

"Sony plans to roll out PS3 games priced at $39.99 download/$59.99 physical disc, according to Futuresource senior market analyst Mai Hoang. The company is expected to add several extras, such as wallpapers and trailers, to the premium disc version."

Very nice, $20 less then retail but disc version also gets some extra content.

Here is my take on it. This obviously does that mean that all PS3 games will be $40 instead of $60. This is instead a marketing scheme to push the PS3 into a DLC-driven system, which has been one of their goals for a very long time. By offering select games at $20 less, they will be able to partially force people to move in that direction. It's cheap, but effective.

Nice, but you could of seen tis coming with some exclusives like Warhawk and Socom Confrontation and then Burnout Paradise. It was only a matter of time but the discount of 20 bucks is nice but i still rather have a retail copy

Isn't that kinda defeating the purpose of Blu-Ray? Its awesome that Sony can cut the games down by $20, but at the same time isn't saying that Blu-Ray isn't necessary and drives up the cost of a game in a way?

Theres more to taht $20 than just the price of the disc, the price of distribution has to included as well, also they are removing the retail markup...

You know what's ironic in all of this (if this is true)? MS is the company preaching left and right about how digital distribution is the future and Sony is the company that is actually doing something in that field.

That's odd.... I thought the whole point of the PS3 was to push blu ray into homes? Now they're offering games for download as well? The downloads will either have huge sizes or blu-ray really isn't needed ;) Also, I'd probably rather have hard copies of console games. My internet is pretty slow and I like getting the complete package. I only ever download PC games from Steam if it's an exceptionally good deal.

Not really, the market where blu-ray needs to be strong is in movies. Thats where Sony is really pushing Blu-ray, the next movie format.

It was always going to happen at some point. I mean, I can think of a few games that are already on PSN for download. And it's not as if Blu-ray games are being taken off the shelves.

I like how people turned a "PS3 to offer full downloadable games at lower prices" thread into an anti Blu-ray one.

Good going fanboys.

Well that makes sense. I wouldn't want to pay full price for a game I can buy on disc unless there is a way to trade it in for partial value.

Why not? Sometimes I like playing games in French, just to not know what they are saying. Who needs 20GB of multiple languages in a retail disc? Perhaps if they'd drop that, it'd reduce dev time and dev cost. As well as make blu-ray not needed to begin with. But its a wonderful idea, to offer the same game.. just gimped from the retail version and call it a full game. Sony has a wonderful marketing dept.

Are you joking? First of all this will probably be region specific. And even if its not, many people are not ready to download 20GB games yet. Sure a lot have broadband, but im a lot of places its either too expensive or not fast enough.

lol. good point...

Blu-ray was irrelevant from the start for games. Only the Sony fanboys were hyping the medium as the best thing since sliced bread. The trends of the industry were all pointing towards digital distribution (music, movies, games). But of course the Sony clan will come in and ignore the obvious and start touting the research of a "insert hypothetical size" Blu-ray disk that will be the proverbial nail in the coffin for the 360 and Wii. Game On...

Some developers would be happy to do this. As many developers complain about how much money retailers(Gamestop) are making on the Used Game sales. With this they can presumably erase the used game sales.

The fact that you compare Blu-ray and UMD's success just shows that you don't know what you are talking about.

Here's a hint though: Blu-ray successful, UMD not successful

I think you are actually paying for the Blu-ray disc, the shipping costs, the printing costs and the retailer's cut when you buy the physical copy. The trailers and wallpapers are just extra.

No, you're supposed to pay the premium so the store selling it can make a profit.

Wrong, if there's value in blu-ray from the start, its still there. There's still great reasons to won a physical copy of a game. Such as taking it to someone else's system.

And I can have a complete library of games with only my hard drive, no need to carry around disks. Plus it's $20 cheaper, and I don't worry about not being able to find the game either.

Considering my internet speeds, and the hard drive space (even if I do upgrade), I'd rather pay the extra $20 to have a solid copy.

It was episodic content that was compiled on a disk afterwards.

I LOVE what Sony is doing with PSN as far as downloading full games is concerned. But I find it hard to believe that retail is going to let them undercut them. There are many things that could hold this back. But I'll be the first in line if it's true. Trust me on that. I got a fiber connection and I ain't afraid to use it.
