"Sony plans to roll out PS3 games priced at $39.99 download/$59.99 physical disc, according to Futuresource senior market analyst Mai Hoang. The company is expected to add several extras, such as wallpapers and trailers, to the premium disc version."
Very nice, $20 less then retail but disc version also gets some extra content.EVOLV3
blu-ray becomes irrelevant to gaming if that's the case.Ontainssshhhhhhh! The men in black suits will come for you! :P
blu-ray becomes irrelevant to gaming if that's the case.OntainHow long does it take you to download 30+ gb of data? I bet I can drive to GameStop and be back home before you can download it.
Isn't that kinda defeating the purpose of Blu-Ray? Its awesome that Sony can cut the games down by $20, but at the same time isn't saying that Blu-Ray isn't necessary and drives up the cost of a game in a way?DarkGamer007Theres more to taht $20 than just the price of the disc, the price of distribution has to included as well, also they are removing the retail markup...

Sometimes I like playing games in French, just to not know what they are saying. Who needs 20GB of multiple languages in a retail disc? Perhaps if they'd drop that, it'd reduce dev time and dev cost. As well as make blu-ray not needed to begin with. But its a wonderful idea, to offer the same game.. just gimped from the retail version and call it a full game. Sony has a wonderful marketing dept.

blu-ray becomes irrelevant to gaming if that's the case.OntainAre you joking? First of all this will probably be region specific. And even if its not, many people are not ready to download 20GB games yet. Sure a lot have broadband, but im a lot of places its either too expensive or not fast enough.

lol. good point...
Blu-ray was irrelevant from the start for games. Only the Sony fanboys were hyping the medium as the best thing since sliced bread. The trends of the industry were all pointing towards digital distribution (music, movies, games). But of course the Sony clan will come in and ignore the obvious and start touting the research of a "insert hypothetical size" Blu-ray disk that will be the proverbial nail in the coffin for the 360 and Wii. Game On...[QUOTE="Ontain"]blu-ray becomes irrelevant to gaming if that's the case.dotWithShoesHow long does it take you to download 30+ gb of data? You can't sleep when you're driving to Gamestop (Well, you shouldn't at the very least :P)
I'll pass. I prefer to see the disc on my shelf.kingdreAs do I, kinda kills the collectable factor of games when all you can say is "look at my HDD, its got so many games on it"

sony touts blu-ray as necessary for gaming... yet they are starting to go the DD route

I'll add to it, I can drive to GameStop, buy my game, come home and play it and then sleep before your game is finished downloading. And guess what, if my HDD dies on my PS3, I can replace it and instantly go back to playing my game.. you have to redownload it.. Yup... much better, very well worth that $20
What will consolites say now after bashing steam for the last couple of years and saying they would only want hard copies of full games? :)blue_hazy_basicI don't mind DD, I just like having a physical copy
I like how no matter how many time Sony puts it foot in its mouth with a rushed to market format (hot today, obsolete tomorrow), the fanboys still back them 100%. How are those UMDs working out for ya? Game On....I like how people turned a "PS3 to offer full downloadable games at lower prices" into an anti Blu-ray one.
Good going fanboys.

 that's absolutely ridiculous. That's ok, but people are whining about paying 10 bucks for DLC?
facefreakingpalm
I'll believe this when I see it.There really isn't much of a source for this rumor.warhawk and Socom were multiplayer titles only an birnout was several months old when it was released on PSN. I can't see the retailers being too happy about this. They are already nervous about this to begin with.heretrixYou forgot about Siren Blood Curse. It's a full and somewhat lenghty game that was available for download before releasing on disc.

I just want a hardcopy of a game that I can take where ever I want, let a friend borrow it, sell it, buy it used, ect.
I can see downloading some games but definitely not all.

Some developers would be happy to do this. As many developers complain about how much money retailers(Gamestop) are making on the Used Game sales. With this they can presumably erase the used game sales.

The fact that you compare Blu-ray and UMD's success just shows that you don't know what you are talking about.
Here's a hint though: Blu-ray successful, UMD not successful
So let me get this straight, I'm supposed to pay a 20 dollar premium for some wallpapers and trailers?I think you are actually paying for the Blu-ray disc, the shipping costs, the printing costs and the retailer's cut when you buy the physical copy. The trailers and wallpapers are just extra. that's absolutely ridiculous. That's ok, but people are whining about paying 10 bucks for DLC?

No, you're supposed to pay the premium so the store selling it can make a profit.
blu-ray becomes irrelevant to gaming if that's the case.OntainWrong, if there's value in blu-ray from the start, its still there. There's still great reasons to won a physical copy of a game. Such as taking it to someone else's system.

And I can have a complete library of games with only my hard drive, no need to carry around disks. Plus it's $20 cheaper, and I don't worry about not being able to find the game either.

I LOVE what Sony is doing with PSN as far as downloading full games is concerned. But I find it hard to believe that retail is going to let them undercut them. There are many things that could hold this back. But I'll be the first in line if it's true. Trust me on that. I got a fiber connection and I ain't afraid to use it.
