https://blog.playstation.com/2024/11/19/the-playstation-portal-remote-player-experience-to-evolve-with-new-system-update/

Since Cloud Streaming (Beta) on PS Portal is still an experimental offering, the features available during the beta period may change over time and may not reflect the final experience.

Let’s take a deeper look at what you can expect in this beta:

Features available during the Beta

  • Stream select PS5 games in the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog
    • Over 120 PS5 games from the PS Plus Game Catalog, including Dave the Diver, Ghost of Tsushima, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Monster Hunter Rise, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, will be accessible on PS Portal via cloud streaming*
  • Streaming up to 1080p/60fps**
  • DualSense wireless controller features, including haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, speakers, touchpad (emulated on the touch screen for PS Portal), and motion sensor***
  • PlayStation Plus Cloud storage
    • Save data and game progress can be stored up to 100GB and will be automatically synced with your PS5 console, making it easy to switch seamlessly between local and streaming gameplay, and between multiple devices.

Cloud Streaming (Beta) for PS Portal will be available through the PlayStation Plus Premium plan, which is offered in the following locations:

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Republic of Cyprus, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and United States.

This is sweet! PS Portal players, will you be checking this out? And for those who don't have one, are you considering one?

Nah.. I'm good. Why not just play your PS5? I know that your girl might be watching TV or something, but you could always watch with her, or just screw around on your phone/tablet for a little while...

Also, streaming... lol. Like I said nearly 10 years ago, we are still at least 10 years away from streaming being a viable option, and probably more than that (I said 20 years at the time and here we are halfway through that timeline and streaming still sucks ass).

Ouya sucked, Shield had potential but sucked, Luna sucks, o line game streaming is a joke... the list goes on and on. I'll wait until SONY releases a new proper handheld... seeing as though that's probably the only way we'll ever get another SOCOM game..

I was told the cloud infrastructure wasn't there yet, so this must be a bad thing.

nope, cloud streaming is okay as long as you pay hundreds of dollars to Sony for dedicated hardware first.. 🙄

Just tried this very briefly on Doom Eternal and Final Fantasy Stranger of Paradise and it worked flawlessly. Very excited by this! At $200, the Portal is a steal for what it can do.

Wii U was actually pretty neat. With some form of support it could've been great. Wonder if it would've sold more had they not given it an epicly stupid name.

Portal is a neat product but it always seemed like Sony desperation to me.

Like you get a room full of marketing and sales c-suite assholes, they're sitting around a table looking at these studies and they find out that 1.5% of Playstation owners complained that when their TV is otherwise occupied with non-PS stuff, they wish they could still game on it.

How is the latency with Doom Eternal?

I hear streaming is pretty good with a lot of games but not so good with shooters and multiplayer games.

I got to try it out a bit this morning; it works pretty well.

People are allowed to do different things in different rooms when living with others. Heck, you can be the same room and do different things. I use my Portal primary on the couch when the TV is occupied, in the bedroom before bed or, in my office between breaks while my PS5 only ever stays in the living room.

The argument of "why don't you use X" can be extended to damn near every device. Why watch a movie on your TV when you watch on your phone? or vice-versa? Because my 65in OLED is in my living room and not my bedroom. Many things boil down to 1) convenience and 2) user experience and tons of folks spend lots of money on those two things.

The big challenge there is actually supporting it with games. Any current system could certainly do it, technically speaking. But that's the easy bit. Arguably what killed the wiiu was that very few games actually made good use of the second screen. Even Nintendo didn't really know what to do with it. The integration of the gamepad, overall, was amazing.

Sony don't have a great track record of supporting more than 1 system at a time. Making games with considerations for a second screen is more work that making pro patches for the PS5 Pro.

Anywho, on topic, not tempting for me at all. Cloud gaming is an awful way to play games.

But I'm surprised they didn't have it as an option at launch.

Well you're Mr. PC Gamer, so your standards are probably higher than mine lol. So far, it feels very close to playing like I playing it locally.

The streaming is pretty good; I’ve got to play a few games and have had no issues. It’s actually somehow better than remote play when I’m in my bedroom. (my upload speeds are probably trash)

But, they need to add two things before releasing it:

- a method to display your trophies

- a method to sort the list of games

That's good to know. I think cloud/streaming/etc could be really great as game sizes increase, I'm genuinely hopeful for the technology in a lot of respects. Though it does seem like it could be abused by publishers as a way to reinforce the whole "you don't own this game, you just pay for the rights to play it" mentality.

So apparently with this you don’t need to buy a PS5 to play these games. How very interesting. 🤔

Cloud streaming-wise? Definitely not the full library or day one releases. Ex. Astro Bot.

Remote play-wise? I think all of them except for VR.

and yet PS Now is playing catch-up in terms of library of games, Day One releases, and supported devices in comparison to Xbox Cloud Gaming..

but hopefully Sony gets there one day.. the more options, the better..

It wasn’t something that I was actively looking into, but this was a good move by Sony to put it on the Portal so that people can see what it’s really about. I’ve had no issues so far, so that’s pretty cool. I’m happy that it’s already part of something I paid for. I’m curious to see if Portal becomes even more popular now.

and i personally didn't have a problem with PS Now other than it was initially a paid form of backwards compatibility and that the tech at the time objectively wasn't good..

It wasn’t something that I was actively looking into, but this was a good move by Sony to put it on the Portal so that people can see what it’s really about. I’ve had no issues so far, so that’s pretty cool. I’m happy that it’s already part of something I paid for. I’m curious to see if Portal becomes even more popular now.

but are you aware the PlayStation already had clouding gaming available on your smartphone and on PC?.. i mean, without the need to pay $200 for dedicated hardware?..

I’m not a mobile gamer, I much prefer the PS Portal form factor for this sort of thing, it’s amazing. Have you tried it?

I don’t do much PC gaming these days. But I remember PS Now being advertised on PC.

Where did I say Xbox cloud gaming sucks? As I mentioned, PS Now was first, i didn’t see you praising it. Why is that, cause it’s a PlayStation service? 🤣

ah okay, good to see you are a fan of cloud gaming.. i'll be sure to keep that in mind for future reference.. 👍be sure to keep that same energy..

but it isn't "mobile gaming".. you can connect the controller you already own to the smartphone you already own.. prior to this latest update, you could have basically done all the same from devices you already own without spending an additional $200..

i guess my question is, were you aware of this?..

That you could do cloud gaming on a phone? Sure.
But do I care? no, like I said, I wasn’t actively looking into cloud gaming nor do I care about playing games on my phone. What people love about the Portal is the form factor. It’s way more comfortable and better designed for this type of experience.

the portal is literally a screen with a PS controller.. your phone is also a screen and you already own a PS controller.. there is no practical difference except you didn't have to spend $200..

but hey, whatever.. if you like it, i love it.. enjoy 👍
