It sold five million for being a new Kojima game, and something new from the creator of Metal Gear Solid. One of the most beloved IPs in video games. It sold for the same reason Anthem also clocked five million relying on 'from the creators of Mass Effect'.
However I would argue a lot of people wasn't happy with the game itself. & a sequel isn't going to match those sales as a result because many who bought the first game know exactly what its follow-up is offering, and with the insane budgets that are put into Death Stranding and its marketing I'm not sure it'll make as much back as you believe.
So yeah I would call Death Stranding fans niche, are its sales? no. Yet I wouldn't imagine they made much money back off it with how much the game cost to make +marketing.
At the end of the day I don't want to say Death Stranding is at all like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, yet has a lot in common with Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Critics love both games, as do loyal fans of games past, general perception is both games are not living up to the creators reputation.
Wasn't Kojima making a Metal Gear Solid spiritual successor at somepoint, or is that the Xbox exclusive game?
