Poll PlayStation: The Flop of 2016, how did it happen? (33 votes)
Now with 2016 coming to a close, was anyone else as surprised as me to see how poorly PlayStation did for 2016 to give it the worst performance of any console this year? What do you think was the biggest contributing factor?
PlayStation had come off of a great year, 2015...winning every month at NPD, UK and Australia. Come into 2016, PlayStation has now lost the past 4 months in a row at NPD, lost the past 3 months in a row in the UK, and lost the past 2 months in a row in Australia. Last year they had one Black Friday, but his year they lost black Friday. And that is with a new PS Pro console release and a PS4 Slim release.
Maybe it was due to a lack of games for the second half of the year with no good game since Uncharted 4 was released way back in May....only to be followed up by The Last Guardian in December.
Many think it could be related to them going fully multiplatform by releasing the PS Pro as well as putting all their top PS3 games on PC now this year, giving the impression that PS is now no longer unique.
How much impact did the price hike of 20% to PSN+ impact the dismal year for 2016? A jump that large for online that is already free on PC, and the consensus that their free games with PSN+ have been deteriorating in quality compared to the competition's offering?
Or maybe it wasn't just the lack of games, but the poorly scoring games...the ones that flopped outside of Uncharted 4 and the rehash of Ratchet & Clank. When you see games like No Man's Sky that flopped, Street Fighter V that flopped, The Last Guardian that flopped, Call of Duty Infinite Warfare marketing tie in which the game flopped, World of Final Fantasy that flopped, The Tomorrow Children that flopped, not to mention the 28 PSVR titles that all flopped.
Or was it related to the PSVR, which flopped big time by pushing out only 25% of the anticipated sales at this time?
Was it because they released an all new console that still suffers from poor performance that has troubles with native 4K and relies on checkerboarding? Or maybe the lack of a UHD player like the competition has?
Or has the frequency of downtime on PSN been a issue that has plagued enough owners that dampened their viewpoint of 2016?
What say you SW, why do you think 2016 was a flop for PlayStation?
