@sonic_spark: lol, yes each console does come with a single player experience; it's called Astro's Playroom :P

On topic, it appears those that think Sony is in a drought is not paying attention to the VR games that came out this year. I believe this year has had the biggest increase in PlayStation's VR games ever, most of which cannot be played on other consoles.

@OmegaBlueUp: The reason why nobody is including VR in the debate is that the subject was output for the console.

2023 hasn’t seen a single Sony game for ps5 and won’t do until October…unless it’s delayed. There isn’t another game with a release date on the horizon.

@sealionact: ... But PSVR2 games are PS5 games, so I don't know how you can't say it is output for the console.

Sony has released games this year: Horizon Call of the Mountain, and MLB the Show (yes, I know it's multiplatform but it is still a Sony game).

@OmegaBlueUp: Your argument against Sony having a drought on ps5 is that they released a game that you need different hardware for and a baseball game available on every format that hardly differs from previous years baseball games?

@sealionact:

OP literally mentions multiplat games that were exclusive like Street Fighter.

FF16, Raganrok and, Spider-Man 2 are all releasing within a 12 month window. The only drought is in my wallet.

@Nonstop-Madness: i could be wrong but i believe TC was talking about Sony first-party exclusives for this year versus a reliance on 3rd party deals..

@sealionact: I thought this was about a drought in PS5 games in general, or at least games exclusive to PS5 and the PSVR2 library would be a big argument against that claim. I thought you bringing up Sony first-party games was a little irrelevant but I guess not.

My point bringing up those games was to prove your statement was false. Excluding past remakes/remasters, this year so far is similar to prior years, maybe one title less.

@OmegaBlueUp: Considering you can’t play psvr2 games on your ps5 (without additional hardware) I don’t see how those games can be counted as ps5 games.

Fact remains that if you have a ps5, Sony won’t release a game for that console until October, and that has never happened before. Last year alone there were four full games by Sony, and that’s just for the outdated ps4.

@sealionact: odd to just discount VR like that. Would you say that any game that requires a peripheral is not a game on that platform?

I'm going to still be counting PSVR2 games. According to Wikipedia, it looks like this year will have 6 Sony games similar to last year (excluding all the PS Classics games). There is 2 PSVR2 listed for this year, if you don't want to count them I would argue that you shouldn't count the 2 remakes/remasters from last year.

[...]

PSVR2 games are indeed PS5 games.. but, unless there is updated info, a quick internet search shows that there are only around 600,000 PSVR2 units sold.. so if the PS5 is at 40 million units sold, PSVR2 users only account for 1.5% of the PS5 userbase..

That's 98.5% of PS5 owners who won't own (and probably won't care) about those VR games.. it's kind of tough to argue that VR matters when almost 99% of PS5 owners literally can't play them on the hardware they already own..

which, on topic, kinda puts Sony/PlayStation in a weird spot moving forward.. they are obviously still going to develop and support VR games and they are also investing heavily in developing live-service games.. both of which core Sony fans don't seem to care much about and will take resources away from traditional titles like Spiderman 2..

BUT, none of that will matter to Sony if the PS5 is selling like hotcakes regardless.. 🤷‍♂️

Ever since Sony's alledged shady ways of blocking games releasing on rival platforms was brought to the light, it seems their output is suffereing.

Nooo, Xbox doesn't do that. What about Stalker 2, Ark 2, even Starfield which would be a multiplatform ( probably before it would be a TIMED exclusive if Sony secured it according to rumors ) if MS didn't stepped in.

etc? Don't get me wrong, PS5 is still a great console, one I plan on buying in the future. But let's be honest here, they are having an Xbox-like drought. The biggest drought in a long long time. Sony are known for their output of quality games, so what's happening?

Xbox drought? LOL Now i've heard everything.

All I can say is, I have so many games I don't know what to do with em. I agree sony first party games have slowed down this year, but Sony 3rd party deals keeps things exciting in-between

I did mention this was the PS4, Xbox One era, I guess you conveniently ignored that to support your comment. What MS is doing (your comment I quoted) is simply adapting to the alledged tatics by doing the same thing in the current era (PS5, Xbox Series). The games you mentioned haven't released yet. I was talking about the past generatrion.

@OmegaBlueUp: I guess I would (discount?) dismiss psvr2 games, because very few people buy them. It’s an add on, and I have no idea how you can ignore that Sony have released so little for the console itself.

Sony fans seem happy with what is being released, but yes…the amount of remasters and remakes seems like a lack of ambition to me.

Like I said, my main point is that this year has no Sony games for their console until hopefully October, and that has never happened before.

@sealionact: I understand that the PSVR2 has a small install base (which I do place most of the blame on Sony for their poor marketing), but it still adds so much to the PS5 library that is not available on other consoles. I don't think any PSVR2 owner would be saying that they are in a gaming drought.

@Antwan3K: I think you (and some others here) are glamorizing past years and forgetting the slow times that frequently happen; it seems like there is at least one claim of gaming droughts each year. And yes, a 10 month drought has not happened before... Unless you exclude games like you are doing now.

Covid, inflation, and people with PCs. Early on, a lot of the PS5 games looked like slightly better PS4 games. It's just now that we are starting to see that generational jump but there hasn't been anything worth picking a PS5 for.

I've enjoyed my PS5, but would be lying if I said I was thrilled with their software output at this point. We're nearly three years into this gen, this should be the sweet spot.

Just in time for the PS5 Pro. Maybe by then there will be an actual game to play... either way I'm getting one.
