How soon do you honestly think downloadable content will take over? Broadband isbarely in a majority of homes, and it will be a very long time beforethe majority of people have internet speeds necessary to download full length HD movies in a reasonable amount of time. Even then, 100% penetration would probably take decades.
Also, many people, such as my self, simply prefer disc-based storage. I like having a hardcopy of what I own lying around, as a backup in case my HDD gets wiped, orsimply for convenience and portablility reasons. I like being able to carry the disc upstairs to watch it in my bedroom, or across the street to watch it at a neighbors, or having the ability to lend the movie to a family member.
It will be al ong time before one can instantly redownloada file wherever they are so that they can watch it no matter what they are doing. Disc based storage will be around for a long long time,I assure you.
for some reason TC reminds me of greg_splicer with his CAPS and EXCLAMATIONS!??!?!!?.
anyway i dont thing youve ever watched a BD because its amazing.

That's pretty much my view on that. A lot of people out in the country don't have access to broadband and won't for some time. And people trust something they can hold in their hands as opposed to a file on a hard drive.

On higher speed internet connections. It's better for the economy for downloadable media to defeat Bluray. Therefore supporting Sony is unpatriotic.
Downloadable content is the future but not even close to the near future. There will always be a market for discs and there needs to be an HD format. It will probably be 20 years before enough of the country/world has the bandwidth to make downloadable HD movies the standard... and even then there will still be plenty of people without it. Once prices come down there's no reason for anyone to be buying regular DVDs and if they have an HDTV they won't.
And I would bet that the Crysis install is over 10GBs. Console games take up more space on disc for easy streaming. The more space availiable to developers, the better, PERIOD. If a developer can find use for 20GBs of space then they're welcome to it and won't have to limit anything. There's no reason to complain because at this point Blu-ray is a free bonus in PS3.
we r way yot far away from just DL content
crysis is on dvd9 bc computers have a very large HDD space that the game can transfer stuff onto
and MS is stupid bc they have system with none or 20gis of space, also charging u way to much for bigger HDD
do some research before u speak!
First off, I can tell you are just talking to pick an argument, and know very little about what you say. Its called "Blu-ray" not blue ray or blue-ray. And second of all, Yes downloading HD content will surely be popular in the future. But do you honestly think it will be more popular than.. say.. renting movies is now?
I'm sure people will still prefer to own a physical copy of the movies they have.
And about Crysis, you say that as if EVERYONE IN THE WORLD CARES ABOUT THAT GAME. I for one don't. Its just another shooter, only with prettier graphics. Anyway, the reason its being shipped on DVD9 is because its a PC game. How many people do you know with a blu-ray player in their PC? hmm? count them. probably none.
Blu-ray is still a pretty expencive technology. LOL @ trying to insult "blue-ray" because a PC game is coming out on DVD-9.

I'm not praising crysis, it just pisses me off how ps3 fanboys say that you need blu-ray for better games, with grater experiences, better graphics and etc. The only reason I point crysis, is because its a game that cannot be done in ps3 and is on dvd9

The game is installed completely on the HDD. If the game had to be streamed from the disc, with minimal use of the HDD, like it would if it were on a console, it would require a larger storage medium, most likely. Though we can't say that this is definate until we see the final specs of the game (how much HDD space it takes up).
have you downloaded any HD movies??? 720p movies are ususally 2 hours with a nice connection on market place.....plus if you have an Elite, space would not be a problem...and I doubt it's 1Gb for 10 minutes..unless ur talking bout 1080ptacubano
Lol, you either have T4 or speaking lies. High res SD movies (SVCD or DVD rips) take me 5 hours to download
Blu-ray will be the last physical media format for massive scale distribution IMO. Digital Distribution is next-next-gen (after Blu-Ray is gone)MikeE21286

PC games have been coming on CDs up until March-April of this year. Some werecoming onup to 8 CDs. Company of Heroes was one of the first games to come on a DVD, and it was just a transitional game, as you could also buy it on CDs. The reason behind this is that not every PC gamerhada DVD drive in their computer, though by now the vast majority do, and as such games are now shipping on DVDs.
Medievil TW 2 and Flight Simulator X came on 2 DVDs, btw, and that was after the added compression that is allowed for PC games, as they end up being installed on the HDD anyway.

People are still distrubuting software on CDs and DVDs. What makes you think we'll skip next-gen media formats (for movies/games/etc.) like Blu-ray and HD-DVD for digital transferring entirely? Digital media is great and all, but we don't have the capacities to transfer such loads on our current network infrastructure. Use your head man, this aint Japan.

But Blu-ray will never go out of S-T-Y-L-E (stupid filter) lest something even more convenient comes along, such as mini blu-ray or some such, which has a higher capacity.
The fact is, With games, if all games were Digitally distributed, people would have an actual limit to how many games they could have. the days of people amassing collections of 100,000 games would be over. *shrug*
LAST EDIT I SWEAR: IMO, DD is best suited for rentals/trailers. For instance, I can see in maybe 25 years or so, maybe 30 years, Movie rental places will be a shadow of their former selves, and will simply have some form of HD physical content, and the other option would be DD. How cool would it be if instead of having all that, The rental places of the future would be no bigger than an ATM, and all you'd have to do is insert your credit card, pick which movies you wanted, and then take your credit card home, and download the movies off it to your TV?
Wow.. now that would be amazing... Micro tech! Its uppon us!
You're right on the size of storage holding us back. The prices of digital storage is the biggest thing holding this back. I mean hell....500 GB storage devices are still high price. I think it will be a little longer (like you're saying, now that I look at it). I mean people are gonna wanna be able to access all that content that they have right now also. How are they gonna do that if all we have is things that play digitally distributed media as well. 30 years seems reasonable like you suggested, but only time will tell

Some Blu-Ray movies are 50GBs. How are you going to download that?
Leave your computer/console on for 3 days? With that trouble people will just want to rent or buy the physical disc instead.
I didn't realize Japan has an average of 61 Mbps download speed. :o
I actually like digital distribution, but it does have some limitations.
Saying that ppl are ready for total digital distribution more than they are for a new format is laughable.
Not everyone that buys consoles is an interenetwhore or even has the high speed that is at least tolerable for doing that like some of us.

Are you talking about HD-DVD cuz MS did not take sides in this format war they just gave you the option to buy one and if BD seems to be the clear winner then microsoft will make a BD detachable for the 360. If you are referring to DVD it will be a long time before that format dies off.

They did take sides in this war. They designed the iHD features on HD DVD discs and, as you already pointed out, released an HD DVD external 360 drive but no Blu-Ray drive.
It was even supposed by many that MS would make the 360 with an internal HD DVD drive, but they obviously never did. But still, support for HD DVD from MS was so strong that people held this asusmption.

MS supporting HD-DVD is completely different from Sony and Blu-ray. MS took the "my enemy's enemy is my friend" idea with HD-DVD support, they really don't care that much about either format because they know digital distribution is the future (and something they are better poised to take advantage of with Windows, Zune and Xbox) but if they could sink Sony they might as well take a shot at it.Are you talking about HD-DVD cuz MS did not take sides in this format war they just gave you the option to buy one and if BD seems to be the clear winner then microsoft will make a BD detachable for the 360. There's a problem with this advantage. Mac can do it too with iTunes and AppleTV. And Sony can do it too with PS3 and their BMG Music and movie companies. So, I'd like to personally thank Microsoft and Apple for selling Sony movies. As well as the rest of the Music/Movie industries content. So, there will be no "Sinking" Sony when Sony owns the music and movies that Microsoft will sell on their download service. At the same time Sony will be selling their own content (and others) on the PSN.
A. Stop using "...".
B. It's Blu-Ray.
C. Downloadable content can't store everything, some games need more, that's just the way it is.
