Pokemon was VERY late in the life of the Gameboy, the Pokemon TV Show is an abomination upon the face of anime, and the card game is pretty much Magic for dummies. Tetris started up the Gameboy, not Pokemon. Megaman, Castlevania, Final Fantasy, and many others all came well before it. Magic the Gathering kick-started the TCG scene and continues to be the market leader based upon player base. Dragonball Z is bigger than Pokemon in anime, as are Yugi-Oh, and a few others. Serious anime fans don't care for it, they prefer Princess Mononoke and Akira by a mile. Pokemon is a quality franchise but its gotten extremely stale for me and its most definitely NOT the best RPG franchise out there (if you can even call it that) its just the most accessible.Runningflame570
A few problems with your statements:
A) Pokemon, while a completely crappy anime, helped paved the way for anime to become what it is today in the US when it came to public view. In that regard, you got to pay your respect. Hell, it was the first anime, series or otherwise, to be widely released in theaters.
B) Even if Tetris was the one game that started the Gameboy's conquest, Pokemon solidified it as THE number one handheld franchise. Not even the majority of console franchises can compete with Pokemon's numbers.
C) Pokemon was dead even with Magic for awhile when it comes to TCGs. Today, Yugioh has a larger portion of the TCG market than Magic. Don't underestimate the power of 12 year olds spending an insane amount of cash each day.
D) No one can argue that Pokemon is not the best RPG out there. The excitement around Pokemon has more to do with the collection and competitive portion, which is what sold the series to begin with.
