What the TC is trying to ask is whether or not PS3 owners support their console here but feel that it is a failure in real life. Cognitive Dissonance is a condition in which a person acts in a different way then they believe, which in turn causes personal instability. And you can't act on a condition, TC.what does that mean?

The little posting I do here on SW is to help people's decisions or opinions. There is no reason to hate a system which many fanboys do, so I feel I should just point out stuff about systems. For example, the games that are out for the PS3 when people say there are no good games.
I also support and defend the 360 and the Wii and I do plan on getting each of them possibly this upcoming summer or further down the line.

It was difficult to word. I feel that Cognitive Dissonance causes a person to act a specific way, aka, defending their purchase, aka belittling anothers.
The only deduction I would produce was the fact that when fanboys post to defend their system, which they themselves feel was not worth the purchase price, they were ACTING on Cognitive Dissonance.
Hold on, I'll post a definition.
Dissonance is when you have internal conflict, it is cognitive when you recognise it. The action you are driven to take to reduce or eliminate dissonance is called dissonance reducing behaviour.
Consider a consumer who bought a high value item but whose expectations have not been met. They had high expectations but their experience of the reality of the item is disappointing, they are in a state of dissonance and it sure is cognitive. What do they do, well they may be able to return the goods in which case they can perhaps rest content with the new belief they have about that item and at least they get their money back.
Assuming returning the item is not possible, they can still take action to reduce the conflict between their expectations and their initial perception of the reality of the offering. They may seek out others who have bought the item and try to get support for their decision to boost their belief in the item back to a level nearer their expectation.
Consequently, the theory can be expanded, that If asked about their views on the item, they may effectively tell a more positive tale, more in keeping with their expectations than the reality they initially found on actually getting the item. This may be a good reason to beware of other buyer's recommendations!
Cognitive dissonance is also relevant to marketing when there are conflicting claims associated with a product:
Motorcycles can be useful fun and convenient transport but they pollute the environment, are not that efficient and you are statistically more likely to be injured in an accident than by using the train. A Motorcyclist will actively play down these negatives in order to reduce dissonance between these ideas in their own heads.
Marketers need to take into account any areas associated with their offerings likely to produce cognitive dissonance and attempt to reduce it as much as possible in their communications and the products themselves.

Ahh, I guess it was just the semantics of the question. If you're asking whether or not someone acts on a condition it's a given that you are saying they have this condition. Therefor saying that all PS3 owners are disappointed with their purchase. And if you have a condition you are already acting on it, as you put it, or you wouldn't have the condition to begin with (Few exclusions). Couple that with the fact that you ask whether or not people feel like they have Cognitive Dissonance right before the assumption. I should have explained myself more clearly as well.[QUOTE="Zassimick"]Zenfoldor
Very good explaination.
To be honest, I didn't know what cognitive dissonance was like everyone else (I had learned in Psych 101, but that was first semester freshman year of college and I can't remember that far back), but I just checked out wikipedia real quick for a brief explanation. lol
And I guess I didn't answer abou whether I am satisfied with my purchase. Yes, I am very satisfied with buying the PS3. Sometimes I wish I had bought a 360 instead, like when Halo 3 came out (even though I was disappointed with the game) but after all I've done with it, I made the right decision to suit my gaming needs.
That is what I try to get others to see; the PS3 is not a bad decision in the least, but if it doesn't fit your tastes then there I would tell you there isn't a reason to buy one just like with the 360 and the Wii. It's all about the games in the end.

well I learned a lot today. at least something good came out of it
I dont have a PS3but I defend it the most becasue it's the underdog, and it's a great machine with great games coming.Koalakommander
LMFAO the ps3...
"4D graphics"
"I'll give you $1200 if you can find a PS3 on any store shelf"
LMFAO more like the cocky guy that just got his ass beat by a little kid.
i just have it to play great games... same reason i have a 360 and a Wii...
no idea whether that qualifies as Cocknitive Disownage ... :-P

I'm sure that there are probably equal percentages of each console with CD.
Why did you capitalize cognitive dissonance? Or was it like that when you pasted it?YourBFFJill
When your teaching people a new phrase that contains two words, it's best to capatalize them both, like a proper noun, so they know it is a phrase, and not simply two words that I randomly put together, imo.
If I get the meaning of what TC is saying, I think alot of people get this "condition"
People get a blind arrogance to what they own/like and don't/can't see the good in other things.
Although Nintendo are my personal most respected gaming company, I never planned on getting the Wii as I decided it wasn't for me. I'd written it off as a bit of a niche console/party machine. A good idea, but not for me. I'd of never bought one, but was given one over christmas - and after playing Zelda for an hour, my opinions have changed a bit - it seems the console CAN DO single player.
I think its very easy to fall into the conthingy disthingy - but I doubt people even know they are doing it
