Mass effect is the simplification of everything not only in gameplay but in content and features. Sure who need inventory in an rpg? Lets remove it and add some headshots. It should be called role playing third person shooter with 1TON dialogues. But fun aside, mass effect 2 is not the revolution people make it to be. I belive that both dragon age and fallout 3 are higly superior title with more detail, complex gameplay and far more content. Mass effect 2 simply falls short.dakan45
i think part of the reason people praise it so much is because of how much Bioware spent just improving upon the first game, and how the 2nd game sets up for an epic finale that isn't simply "spend 30 hours fighting the reapers"
besides that, the Mass Effect franchise as a whole has never been totally perfected, it's always the overall package that made the first game so good, and in a lot of peoples' opinions it's the same deal with the second game, with the exception that the 2nd game is overall a much much stronger package than the first
also as a Bioware game it does a lot of things right, as an rpg it does a lot of things right, i think the approach they took with simplifying the first game's rpg gameplay elements was the right choice at the end of the day, sure people will complain and have, but i think the changes they made will make expanding to a more sophisticated rpg gameplay system a lot easier and more enjoyable than if they had simply taken the first game's system and thrown on more things
if wasn't as optimistic i wouldn't have liked the first game in the first place...

final fantasy is good, at least the older ones are. also ME2 is WAY WAY WAY overrated. the only part i think it shines in is the dialogue and the character development. most skills and stuff are useless, too few weapons, very linear action, not many sidequests, just a really dull game except for the characters. now KOTOR, ruined RPGs for me, that games is head and shoulders better than ME2 or for that matter nearly any other rpgI liked KOTOR back in the day but I never got all this 'best rpg ever' nonsense people like to throw around. it wasnt THAT good. Its the star wars licence people are so hung up on
No, though a great game I came away from it pretty underwhelmed. The combat was a big step up from the original but the way they extended the length of the game by heavily implementing their slogan "Asemble your Squad" was pretty lame although it did introduce you to your teamates. The pace of the squad assembling felt more like the side quests of the first game which isn't a good thing. The last mission was also a let down unlike the first games end mission but the final boss battle (ME2), though easy, was quite thrilling.
Also Martin Sheen was terrible, the scene from The Simpsons comes to mind where Lisa is doing voice recordings for her Lisa Lionheart doll and Krusty the Klown barges in spits his lines out with the bada bing bada boom "this is how the pros do it" mentality.
I only really buy AAA and AA games, and usually only after they've reduced in price. It's rare that I'm ever disappointed by a game; frustrated, yes, and sometimes wish games lived up to their potential better. Mass Effect 2 is something special, but I can't expect all games to be Mass Effect 2. Just like watching an incredible movie; some movies will simply be average, but if they entertained me then I got my money's worth. (I probably won't watch an average movie twice, though.)
It's not that different from other Bioware games in terms of quality and story. If you haven't played a bioware game before, then expect to be spoiled with an interesting story. If you have played a Bioware game before, then you will either feel the same or disappointed because it didn't go beyond the formula...
People also have different interests, some like a pure rpg and some are less conservative. Tastes go beyond even genre interest-- it goes to setting and gameplay design interests.
I personally felt that Mass Effect as a series was pretty lacking(still do) when you compare it to other Bioware games or some classic rpg games. It has an interesting storyline, but gameplay wise I couldn't stand it. The main issue I have with this game is that it focuses to much on the action-side, less on the rpg (similar somewhat to Jade Empire which focused on melee combat). I found it entertaining at beginning, but towards the end I was already thinking of re-playing either Planescape or even KOTOR.
Mass effect 2 and uncharted 2 both did. I just finished Heavy Rain last night and i was not impressed. Even though Heavy Rain had a good story to work with i never felt attached to any character like i did in Mass Effect 2. Maybe my expectation were to high going into Heavy Rain but i probably would have enjoyed it more if it was a 2 hour movie instead of a 8 hour game.
Dues Ex did that for me a long while ago thats why when every 16 year old was praising BioShock I was standing back away from my screen looking a little bit...
If by ruining you mean realzing the only thing people like these days is flashy graphics, and RPGs that are primarliy shooters... then yes.... it has put a huge downer on it.Birdy09
That's not really true is it? There are about two games like that that I can recall, and even then one of those is Fallout 3.
If you were talking about generic streamlined shooters like cod and bad company I might agree with you though.

And all this time I was thinking it was the terrific narrative allowing you to take charge of the star wars universe leading it down the path to prosperity or ruin. Please Log In to post.
