disk errors dont count becuase they have to do with someone mistreating their disks or just placing them in at an angle or something, only permanent problems count as hardware defects. having the three red lights whenever you turn it on, so your xbox is useless, that is a quality issue. freezing problems do not necesarily count as defects, ive had an occasional freeze with every console ive ever had. also, yes ive had to replace my xbox once (this weekend infact).InsaneBasura

DRE's don't count? Ask early PS2 adopters what they have to say about that. DRE's CAN be caused by the disc being dirty or whatnot, doesn't mean that's always the case. It's kind of similar to freezing issues. Some happen due to software bugs, some don't. After 3 freezes in as many games, things should be pretty clear though.

And I can speak from personal experience. I had precisely zero DRE's with my first two 360's, which I owned for a total of around a year. I've had my current 360 for 4 months and have gotten 6 DRE's. 5 in Guitar Hero II and one in Forza 2. Both of them brand new, not evena hint of dust on them. One could argue that those specific discs were somehow faulty, but how likely is that?

Yeah I meant it more as in those circular disk scratches the xbox makes sometimes, or problems where it won't read siks. I just meant any serious problem. And yes, recurring freezes count if they seriously disrupt play.

7 within a 6 month timeframe. As you can imagine, i was not a happy camper. Oh well, that's what warranties are for. "Waiting for replacements is the hardest part". :P

I'm on my 2nd 360. Then again, I'm cursed with all gaming hardware. My 2nd ps2 just broke for no apparent reason, my psp has tons of dead pixels, and my pc has overheating and sound problems.

Works great, considering I sometimes play it for hours at a time, none at all. Every now and then I'll get an overheating message, or the disk cannot be read, but a simple restart fixes that. But oh...my 20GB was another story. But I have to admit, a very nice bunch of people (including me), are lucky for our 360's not to break.

Well, so far the rate's at about 45% defective.

...WOW.

I'd like more poll responses from legit 360 owners to get a larger sample.

How do you determine that they are "legit"?

lol, wow...So you have your 360 set up on a soft leather ottoman that it sinks into and covers the ventilation ports then you cry about going through four.

lmao typical...and the perfect example of what M$ can't engineer out of the 360...user error.

You shouldn't have to buy a specially designed ice box to play your console, should you? User error can hardly be held accountable for the ungodly amount of 360 failures. The fact that people continue to buy them is what amazes me.

I'm not surprised you are on your forth if that's how you position it, you hardly getting any airflow through it. Both the 360 and its power brick should be on a hard surface and dust kept to a minimum.

This is pointless. You are just going to get fanboys who probably never even touched the console that just vote anyway.

Nope, never ever since I got my beautiful machine it has never broken(Thankfully). So many people got problems with their Xbox that they are in their 7th Xbox but anyways I think it all depends on how you treat it...

It's an electronical device. Electricity generates heat, which I'm sure Microsoft were aware of. Computer hardware is therefore (usually) built to withstand high temperatures. If the 360 doesn't, or fails to get rid of the heat, that's obviously not the fault of the user, for you know, using it.

The Elite might have lessened the problem, but it certainly didn't fix it. And wait a minute...first you blame the overheating on user error and then you say the Elite fixes the overheating problem? What's up with that?

That's a common misconception. It can break at any time, no matter how well you treat it. Ask pretty much anyone whose 360 has died.

Okay, I just want to see if the xbox really is as unreliable as people say it is. Please answer honestly. I want to know if your xbox has ever had any frezing problems, had to be toweled, scratched disks, rrod'd, bricked, repaired and if so, how many problems?

I know this isn't indicative of all xboxes, the poll's too small, but I want to see how many people in SW are having problems with this system.

Oh, and I expect a lot of fanboys will lie and say that they've never had problems with the xbox. Please, be honest.

InsaneBasura

You're apparently aware of this already, but don't go expecting a reliable answer to your question from a poll in System Wars... For more reliable unreliability numbers, go talk to a retailer.

For the record: My March 2006 360 died properly, red lights and all. Recieved a refurb with June 2006 written on the case. Had it replaced before it properly died. It crashed quite a bit and I was getting tired of it. My current 360 is brand new and was manufactured in November 2006. From the very start I got DRE's every now and then. But it never got to be too bothersome, cause two days ago I got weirdo graphical artifacts, indicating a future RLOD. And yesterday it scratched my Saints Row disc. Have sent Microsoft an email, and I'm hoping to get a new copy of Saints Row, but I'm certainly not expecting it.

Anyway, other than that I'm having just a great experience! I love the box!

My original 360 destroyed Oblivion, CoD2 and GRAW. M$oft didn't really give a flying ****

This is true. I have treated mine fairly rough (transporting it in an old backpack at least once a week) don't have it extraordinarily well ventilated, I have it vertical, and it's been kicked a few times. No problems at all. By all accounts my 360 should have died within the first 3 months. ;)
