Poll Poll: How powerful do u think PS5 would be compared to the Pro? (86 votes)

Closer to about 2x 28%
Closer to about 3x 20%
Closer to about 4x 20%
Closer to about 5x 33%

PS5 might be released anywhere from 3-4 years from and this is just a for fun speculation to look back on your predictions.

How powerful do you think the PS5 would be compared to the Pro?

Bonus question: What price would you think it would be released at?

Probably 2x, Sony has become pretty cheap. They should have it ready by 2018. Price would be $350 to try and compete with the worlds most powerful console Scorpio.

Hmm.. That seems pretty soon. I feel that's unlikely but at best would be another under the PS4 family rather than a PS5.

We'll see.

Personally, I think the PS5 might be closer to about 4x more powerful than the Pro at best and a retail release no later than 2020 then priced no less than $ 499.

@j2zon2591: I dont know, PS4 is pretty old. You next a next gen console to compete with Scorpio and PC. I think thats why Sony releases the PS4 so weak, so the next one will look better. Could be 2019, but thats a big head start for Microsoft.

You think Sony will give Microsoft a 3 year head start? You could be right, but thats pretty risky. Xbox One is already on the tail of PS4. Scorpio could be the nail in the coffin for Murica. Microsoft is the cool company, Sony is old fashion.

Ah I haven't checked NPD results so I'll check later but yeah. If they wait too long for the PS5 then the Xbox line might get a huge lead again for a while at least in the US.

Then again, I think Sony could just bring down the price of the entire PS4 line and get a good bundle going for the next 3-4 years and pour more budget into their 1st party output if Sony decides not to make another PS4 Pro Plus.

I wouldn't be surprised if the industry suddenly gets "Pro" revision every 2 years from now on though but my gut feeling is that it won't likely happen until the actual PS5 releases.

@j2zon2591: Yeah, i defiantly see them using the price cut for the holidays. But if the market doesnt respond, Switch and Microsoft might conquer America and Japan. Plus PC and mobile will do what they do best, break records.

Just read this article. 10FLOPS if it comes out in 2018?

With the success of the PS4, game enthusiasts are curious about when the rumored PS5 will be released. These rumors have intensified after financial analyst Damian Thong reported he expects Sony to release the PS5 in 2018 to help compete with XBox’s new consoles. Here’s what Thong writes (via Barron):

We are more bullish on image sensors. We have raised our FY3/18 CMOS image sensor OP estimate for to ¥85bn from ¥65bn on the back of 12% sales growth, and see room for upside. We believe Sony’s new 3-layer stacked sensor – deployed Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium and XZs smartphones unveiled at MWC – reinforces their technological lead. The new sensor will provide for up to 1,000 frames/sec image capture and “super slow motion” capability.

We see sustained profit growth in Game & Network Services. We forecast OP growth from ¥140bn in FY3/17 to ¥180bn in FY3/18, driven by expanding software sales and profits. A rising digital ratio and a higher mix of first-party titles will help margins – Horizon Zero Dawn, which launched on 28 Feb, looks to have had a good start with a Metacritic score of 88. While we have tempered expectations to account for rivalry with Microsoft/Xbox and PC gaming, we note that the success of PS VR (which has reached 915K units sold) highlights the health of the ecosystem. We expect Sony to launch a >10 TFLOPS ‘PS5’ in 2H18 to secure the installed base.

Fast turnaround in Pictures is unlikely, but we see improvement: We estimate OP of just ¥40bn in FY3/18 and ¥45bn in FY3/19, even with Spider-Man: Homecoming in July. Sony’s theatrical film business is still challenged by a lack of strong franchises, and faces a no-growth US box office. On the plus side, Sony’s film slate revamp continues, and the alliance with Dalian Wanda may be expanded to drive better access to the China market.

Most of the 2018 rumors have stemmed from Thong’s assertion that Sony will release the console in 2018, but not everyone agrees. Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter told PlayStation Universe gamers should not expect the PS5 until 2019 or 2020.

I don’t [see that happening]. I think Scorpio will have same rules as PS4 Pro- every game made for PS4 Pro has to be fully compatible with PS4. Similarly, every game on Scorpio will have to be backward compatible on Xbox One. So what I think that means is that games will have to run at, say, 1080p and 60fps, but can be upgraded to 4k and 240fps or whatever it will be. But the game will have both on the disc, the hardware will know what file to play, so the Xbox One or PS4 looks for the standard file, while the Pro or Scorpio will pick up the better, faster content. I think that’s what you’ll see, I don’t think that’s a problem, and I think that very few games will support Xbox One Scorpio at launch- the games that support PS4 Pro will definitely support Scorpio, and they may not even run at 4K.

So games will run better, but they will be backward compatible- Microsoft is not replacing the Xbox One- they are upgrading it. So no, Sony will not come up with more hardware in 2018. You may get a PS5 in 2019 or maybe 2020, and an Xbox Two in 2020, and we will continue to get new consoles every three years, and their software will be compatible with the system released right before it. I think that’s going to be the pattern.

Additional rumors speculate there will be two versions of the PS5 including one that comes with a VR headset. This would make sense given the early success of VR on PS4. Sony has not announced a release date for the PS5 but the 2018 rumors look to be premature at this time. Heavy will continue to update you as more info is released on the PS5.

Not by any stretch of the imagination, no. Unless you've been living in the distant past on a Nintendo console, graphical improvements have been relatively minor for many years now. There's always room to get better, but there's still only so much they can do. The days of jumping from 2D to 3D are long past and from PS3 to PS4 wasn't even that big.

Vega 10 on 7 nm FinFET process tech.

Or

Navi II on 7 nm FinFET process tech.

Scorpio already has software infrastructure in-place for anytime upgrade with whole system boost mode.

PS5 will probably use the almighty Jaguar cores too. This time, they will "optimize" it and boost it to 2.6 Ghz.

PS5 release Summer 2020

CPU: Ryzen Octa@ 3.0ghz, 7nm 16 threads

GPU: Navi based 64Ncu's @1200mhz 12-15tflops.

16GB HBM2 1056GB/S bandwidth

5TB HDD

UHD Blu-ray drive

combined with better api and more efficient engines it should be roughly 3X faster than Scorpio.

IMHO, any less than 4x is just not worth it.

I'm not saying it has to be 4x the Tflops, but 4x more powerful in real world applications. With more efficient GPU architectures and game engines I'm betting a 2019 AMD APU part could hit 4x the performance of a Pro without being stupid expensive.

$399.99 should be the target price. It worked well for them in the past, so why change it?

It'll be around 1080ti level and around 4-5 years away...... You may think I'm mad for saying 1080ti performance as it's a complete monster but 4-5years down the line you should have similar performance in the mid-range segment which would make it ripe for the next round of consoles.

It's going to come down to heat and power consumption too.

It'll be better than a 1080ti whilst consuming less wattage. Both the PS4 and Pro used relatively midrange GPUs when they came out. 1080 ti will be low end of midrange in 2019 - 2020. AMD has their 7nm lineup of GPU's releasing in 2018 with at least 16GB's of HBM memory.

It depends if AMD fully synthesize ZEN design for TSMC.

TSMC has fully synthesize Jaguar/Puma/Puma+/FinFET Puma/Evolved Puma core designs.

The minimum work for AMD is to make Cats CPU cores performance and price competitive against any ARM Cortex and Intel Atom competition and offer 2-for-1 price deal.

About 3x the power of the Pro, or double the power of the Scorpio (12TFlops), sounds about right with a target 2019-2020 release.

I would like it to be more powerful, obviously, but either way I don't think the PS5 will force developers to make games run on previous gen hardware. It will be backwards compatible, but its games won't be.

For Scorpio's 16 nm FinFET process technology, MS/AMD/TSMC has managed to fit Hawaii XT type 44 CU GPU into XBO size 360 mm^2 APU chip.

Sony has historical pattern for smaller APU size chips e.g.

at 28 nm: PS4's 348 mm^2, with 18 active CU and 2 disabled CUs

at 16 nm: PS4 Pro's 321 mm^2 with 36 CU active.

2X CU count when shifting from 28 nm to 16 nm.

For 7nm: PS5 or PS4.next, 64 or 72 CU range. Vega 10 is possible at 7 nm. Vega 20 is 7 nm version of Vega 10.

MS's historical pattern for APU size chips e.g.

28 nm: XBO's 363 mm^2, without 32 MB ESRAM, MS could have 28 CU GPU i.e. two sets Bonaire 14 CUs.

16 nm: Scorpio's 360 mm^2 with 40 active CU and 4 disabled CUs.

The problem is perf/watt gains in NAVI era.

~5.5X perf/watt on 28 nm chip 1.83 TFLOPS = 10.06 TFLOPS.

Why the hell are we talking about PS5? The Pro just came out. I have had the Pro for approximately two months. I do not want Sony to release another system in the next year or two. What is next? Yearly refreshes?

This is getting retarded. It doesnt matter if Scorpio has the power advantage, games are what matters. We do not need another game drought as developers move to another architecture when the Pro hasn't even got to stand on its legs yet.

If by PS5, you mean the console after the PS4 pro, then I'd say somewhere between 2 to 3 time more powerfull. And that's thinking it will be released in 3 years.
It sure ain't gonna be 5 times. The xbox one has to be underpowerd and flawed, and 4 years later, Scorpio is heading to be 4.5 times more powerfull.
Judging by that, the Pro isn't underpowerd, so no chance it will be that big of an increase.

Well first of all why do you even want a new console already? PS Pro only just released, and I thought power didn't matter?

Secondly, this completely depends on when it releases:

  • 2018: 2x - 8tf
  • 2019: 3x - 12tf
  • 2020: 4x - 16tf

I don't expect them to release it later than 2020, and I think that 16tf might be a stretch for 2020.

I would say at least 5x more powerful.

We tipically see 16x more power each new generation. Even PS4 and X1, which some people claim to be underpowered, are like 10x more powerful than their predecessors. Pro and Scorpio are just slightly more powerful than the main models. I expects something far better with the PS5 and X2.

It won't be about power, it will be about whether technologies like Virtual Reality gain traction or if a hybrid console like Switch makes mass adoption. The PS5 won't hit shelves because of some arbitrary performance number that can be reached without the need of expensive and exotic cooling. There are much bigger and fundamental questions being asked about the videogame market at the present time. I would be shocked if we hear any PS5 announcements even up to 2019. 2020/2021 is a far better sweet spot for the kind of tech that would go into it.

There won't be a PS5 any time soon though. At least, I hope not.

I loved the X360/PS3 gen. It was so long and was such good value. From COD2 and Kameo in 2005 to Persona 5 in 2017, it's the gen that keeps on giving.

Who knows. It's so far away, who's even thinking about that right now? Ask us again 18-24 months from now.

The jump between PS3 and PS4 is not that much. I expect the same.

Depends on when it comes out.

I think we're going to see off-set upgrades from Sony & Xbox now... Xbox releases an upgrade that's more powerful than Sony... a couple years later, Sony releases an upgrade that's more powerful than THAT... rinse, repeat.

Sometimes, Xbox has more power. Sometimes, Sony has more power.

Pick the games.

I'm guessing 4x. We won't really be able to see a huge difference beyond 4K and HDR being implemented into most games (a guess as that's what Pro was supposed to do).

Either way, I'll eventually get the next Playstation. I always get the newest Playstation. For me to get it at launch though, it has to have something exclusive and awesome that's not on PS4. I'm actually really happy with this gen and would be glad to see it continue another 6 years easy.

Games look really good these days and we're at the point of diminished returns on new hardware. We will never again see a jump like we did from PS1/N64 to PS2/GC/Xbox. Or even PS2 to PS3. I was honestly surprised at the leap in graphical fidelity between Uncharted 3 and Uncharted 4. It's going to take quite a bit to make me toss another $400-$500 at some new hardware; especially if Sony doesn't do backwards compatibility again.

@Telekill: We've reached diminishing returns with "regular"/2D games. I think we've got a ways to go with VR before we do. That's where we'll see a difference going forward.

@jv303: Agreed, but if PS5 is VR based, I'll be severely disappointed and probably stick with PS4 until a massive price drop.
