Poll Poll: Retro Games VS Modern Games? (76 votes)

Retro. (6th gen and backwards) 62%
Modern. (Last Gen and Current Gen.) 38%

Which do you prefer?

Retro games VS Modern games. Which do you enjoy more? Which is better?

Honestly, as much as I enjoyed the 7th gen, I'm going with retro games.

I'm not as impressed or as interested in the majority of the games I've seen this generation. Sure we have stuff like MGSV, Fallout 4, Persona 5, Zelda U, Dark Souls 3 and such. But those are just a FEW games. Even if it's a lot, it doesn't compare to the sheer quantity of quality video games we got back in the day.

When I play old games on the NES, Genesis, and Atari 2600 that I've NEVER played before and enjoy them better than most recent $60 modern AAA games, I think somethings wrong....Just saiyan.

Retro. I can't help it, but I just like these types of games more, sorry. Even most of the newer stuff that I play tend to have their roots coming from older games.

I'll always have nostalgia goggles for the classics, but i'll take modern games. There's no going back to being a kid and playing some of those awesome games again though, which is a shame.

I prefer Retro AAA games over today's AAA games. While AA games and indies still remain as good as ever in comparison to their predecessors.

Modern AAA games require little brain power and are barely ever challenging to appeal to the lowest common denominator. Just look at:

  • Arkham series
  • GTA VI and V
  • Uncharted series
  • CoD
  • Witcher 3
  • Last of Us
  • Final Fantasy 10 and up
  • Skyrim

And the list goes on

I miss when I actually had to explore or look up a guide at an ambiguous part in the game because the game didn't treat me as if I was mentally handicapped. Back when bosses would whip my ass until I found their weakness, instead of strapping a target to their forehead.

Modern games by a country mile. Those of us who played consoles since the 2600, and pc games since then, know how much better games are today. Seriously, who'd choose Pole Position over Forza 6 / Horizon 2? While there are some poor trends in today's gaming markets, in general the games are VASTLY superior to the games of old.

Modern, I like having three dimensions in my games as well as two directions.

Not to mention I'd take the best games of last generation like Dark Souls, Metal Gear Rising, and Super Mario Galaxy 2 over anything from the retro era, even games like Super Metroid. And that's not even getting into Gen 6 or 8.

Although I have very fond memories of older games (especially from the 6th generation - Xbox & Gamecube in particular), I have to go with modern games. Most of my favourite games are from the last generation too.

Let's put it this way. I grew up playing RPGs and imagining the ability to see them in 3D and completely open. I wanted a western open world adventure.

I don't play through Red Dead Redemption and think, I wish this was in 2D.

That isn't to say I don't go back and replay the classics. I play them a lot. A good game is a good game and many of them are far more suited to gaming on the go than modern handheld efforts but on the upper level, I have no time for pretending nostalgia is really better quality, it is what it is. Modern games are held to a higher standard and when they achieve it, they are better.

Civilization 1 vs V. No contest. We've moved onwards in technology for a reason and games have far more capabilities now and people tend to forget some of the shite they had to wade through during 8 bit/16 bit before they got to their classics. People in years to come will ignore the Devil's Thirds of this generation and concentrate on the Witcher 3s just like now they are ignoring Sonic Spinball and Alf on Master System.

That isn't to say things are perfect now, we have had things introduced like pay to win games, endless DLC instead of secrets and unlockables and shit like that which make you wish for simpler times.

I don't prefer one over the other, I like both and there are days that I feel like playing some good old games and other days I feel like playing the newest titles.

Can 6th generations even be considered retro? It wasn't even 15 years ago. Technology has the life-span of a Drosophila.

I enjoy both, honestly. All generations have lesser known titles well worth playing and for me, that's what this generation has been about. Although last gen also had a lot of terrific games. That being said, there are also loads of great old games too. So I like both.

Recent games aside from Witcher 3 and maybe Metal Gear Solid V(haven't played it yet) haven't exactly blown anyone away. I think games in the Xbox 360/PS3 era had perfect mix of technological progress/innovation/gameplay. Games of the 8th gen so far feel recycled.

For example I had never seen a game quite like Gears of War back when it came out(Yes, I know Killswitch) or even a game that emulated being a summer blockbuster as well as Uncharted. Arkham Asylum/City were pretty unique and were by far and still are the best superhero games ever released. Nothing like them came out in the 6th generation. I can't say the same for any games of the 8th gen so far. None is unique, groundbreaking or pushes tech to levels that were simply not achievable before. It's been there, done that.

I'd say 8th gen is actually the worst gen. 7th is the best if counting from the 3rd generation and onward. 1st and 2nd are way too old.

Retro flat out has better and more experimental games that were allowed to come into existence due to there being so many different developers at the time, thousands. Almost everything now is spearheaded and approved through corporate parent companies who own a lot of these previously small developers, and even worse these parent companies have killed off countless others. Originality and experimentation is not dead but everything done these days is pretty play it safe and iterative rather than really being new or innovative.

Risks aren't really taken anymore, obscurity has mostly been wiped from the face of gaming, gaming is becoming a borefest.

Most modern games bore the shit out of me but every once in a while I find one I like. Mostly Japanese stuff I can't stand EA Activision and Ubisoft. But if I had to choose it would be retro nes snes genesis.

The people who prefer retro games are gamers on a Steam sale budget (PC gamers basically) or pretentious fuckwits who think it's 'cool' to play games that look horribly out of date. Knock yourselves out with that shit, assholes.

I consider PS1 and later to be "Modern". Modern>Retro and I have been gaming since the NES.

Modern games destroy all that old garbage. Most of the old stuff has aged badly. I am also someone that moves ahead in life and not live in delusional nostalgia land like so many nintendo fans do.

If you forced me to pick, I'll take a PS3/PS4 over any other console anyday. No problem. Gaming has been getting better every gen. Just because nintendo peaked with the SNES doesn't mean the other companies have not surpassed them years ago.

Enjoy your yearly rehash of COD and Assassin's Creed. There was a time when unique games were much more commonplace. Now when we get a single one that's not an indie the world goes crazy.

@stuff238 Gaming has been getting better with every gen? Name the top PS4 games that are better than the top PS2 games. You'll find that list is very short. 8th gen is the worst gen since the mid 80's.

I voted modern games, which may seen odd coming from someone with 40 years of playing video games under their belt. Push past the heavily commercialised AAA games (I realise this can be difficult for console centric gamers) and there are a lot of very good games that could never have existed in days of yore.

I find that a lot of people look at older games with rose tinted glasses and forget about the vast amount of drivel that came out along side the few truly innovative and challenging games, that went on to influence how gaming is today.

What are some good modern games? Halo? Forza? ...I think sim style racers are the only genre, along with a few FPS, that have really eclipsed what's been done in the past. If one were to compare older game design to what comes out now? It isn't even close. When gaming was more of a niche market the products catered to a more dedicated crowd.

Makes no difference at all. It's pretty much a proof you haven't been gaming to 96 too. If you sucked back then, you'll suck now. Gaining experience in completely different games won't make a difference.

I would say modern games, but I am also a big fan of retro gaming. Contrary to popular opinion, I think games actually made a major breakthrough in the PS3/360 era in that the technology finally advanced enough to allow cinematic storytelling and gameplay and no longer held back developer's ambitions. Some people view this trend as negative ("playing movies"), but I personally think it ultimately advanced the medium. Developers also finally have a good sense of how to develop proper 3D controls nowadays.

That said, I love retro gaming, and not just for nostalgia. Many games from the 16-bit era stand the test of time as fun video games. I don't see glaring weaknesses in the gameplay of games like Super Mario World or A Link to the Past. These games had beautiful 2D gameplay that was polished and honed, and none of the 3D control frustrations and graphical deficiencies of the N64/PS1 era. I'd kick back with a good SNES/Genesis game any day of the week.

@Juub1990: Don't bother. Some of them are too young to realize that. They think people have fond "memories" of those games and don't realize that many of us still go back and play those games. Hell, there are some 90s games that I'm only finding out now and enjoying them from time to time. Level design is so much superior compared to most modern AAA games, it's not even up for discussion.

Back then gaming was smaller and main focus of publishers were gamers. Everything changed after COD's popularity in 2007. Now this young crowd thinks they are gamers and gaming is just getting better. They have yet to learn the meaning of gaming. "But but but these wannabe movie characters make me cry".

I only started gaming seriously in 2005 and the oldest games I've played are the most of the PS2 classics. I voted Modern, I think the PS3/X360 Gen wasn't as bad as some make it out to be, I've found this gen to be underwhelming though.

Err, now that I've said it, I might as well run and hide...

Just curious but what was bad about 2007? If it was PC last-gen was at it's worst place, then I can understand.

2007 was amazing. After 2007, didn't like the tradition of everyone chasing COD money (rehashes and dumbed down sequels). We also lost a lot of great devs and publishers after 2007 including Sierra, THQ, Grim, Massive, Ensemble Studios and so many others. Not to mention absence of many genres. MOBAS and rise of F2P model pretty much killed RTS games last gen.

There were great games too (Starcraft 2, DA: Origins, TLOU, UC 2, Witcher, Mass Effect etc) but overall 7th gen can't provide the greatness that 6th and previous gens had (Warcraft 3, Metal Gear Solid, WOW, Thief, Half Life, Freelancer, No One Lives Forever, Max Payne, Final Fantasy 7, Monkey Island, Broken Sword, SoTC, Planescape Torment, Baldur's Gate 2 and so on). It's not even close IMO.

Hmmm,,, look at it this way homie: Just like how you find this gen underwhelming compared to the 7th gen, many who gamed before found last gen not that cool compared to the previous ones. I personally think that current gen will be better than the last one.

I tend to gravitate more towards older games. Less bullshit like DLC, pre-order crap, and just overall publisher fuckery.

Retro. Can't stand all this open world / sandbox bullshit.

Mostly this, though

I wouldnt mind the sandbox stuff if the sandbox elements were actually well implemented.

Games like X3 and Dwarf Fortress dwarf these AAA wannabe sandboxes.
