Did Microsoft own Nintendo by outselling them 527,000 to 501,000?

Or did Nintendo own Microsoft by selling only 26,000 less than the 360 during Halo 3 month, despite not having any big software releases itself?

I'm going with option B. It's hilarious that the 360 could barely scrape over the top of the Wii with it's MAIN FLAGSHIP title releasing. This is magnified by the fact that the Wii had no major software releases at all.

That pretty darn good ownage there...Too bad it did not show PC, DS and PSP. I would have like to have seen all at once.

OH!!! But that's 90% first party sales for MS! Third parties better make a conference to complain about it!

Hardware only, plz. We all know Halo 3 sold 3.3 million units. No sense comparing software sales when Halo 3 outsells all of the 360's other titles combined 3x over.

Halo 3 was able, in just 5/6 days, to push Xbox 360 up and over the Wii's sales.

If Halo 3 was released on Sept 1st, then sure, it'd be ownage for Nintendo.

But.. Sorry Reggie. Your console lost, due to a game that only had a few days on market before these numbers were taken.

The Sony Family sold 600,000+ consoles so that beat out the Microsoft Xbox 360, The Nintendo Wii and the Nintendo DS.

Actually, Halo 3 had about 11 days before these numbers were taken. It was a 5-week month for NPD. :P

Ah, I stand corrected, but I still think it's significant that Halo 3 was released at the end of the month really.

That's all Halo 3. Let's wait until MS can do that without its MAIN FLAGSHIP title. That's what the Japanese software charts look like all the time for Nintendo.

The key word is "barely". And the 360 has a much stronger library than the Wii at this point. Wait until a few of Nintendo's first-party titles launch. ;)

360 is always having huge software sales. there was 3 other 360 games on the top 10 selling games. So even with so many buying Halo there was still enough buying others to put 3 others in top 10. 360 has the highest attach rate, most million sellers, and just great software sales in general.

In the context of the sentence it's obvious I'm talking about losing/winning this month.

Especially when you consider that's what this whole thread is about.

And whether they're sweating it or not, they're still the ones who're owned or lost this month.

I'm not disputing that, though I don't think the 360 has the highest attach rate, and it has the most million sellers because it had a year headstart. I'm just saying how idiotic it is to throw a software pie chart on the board - in the month that Halo 3 launched and try to claim ownage, as if that's permanent.

your right Halo 3 sold 3.3 million copys and about 300k more Xboxs then normal.

Halo sold 9% more consolse for one month...
That is you totaly discard all other games for that month and other possible reasons for a sales increase...

Congrads.

Microsoft should be commended because they showed that Wii is vulnerable. Who knew?

But I'd say that Nintendo still owned the month. GBA is still going strong, and DS and Wii sold about 1/2 million each. They sold over a million systems in the month (not counting the GC sales which were probably around 10k), and they made profit on every single one of them.

They sold a lot of Wiis, and their three biggest games are yet to come. Brawl, Galaxy, and Mario Kart are sequels to the three biggest Gamecube games.

The Wii may still be selling like hotcakes, but MANY of it's owners have to agree that there isn't much to do with it. I myself own one and was begging for a reason to turn it on after about 3 weeks of inactivity. I somewhat regret buying mine now as it's really not all it's cracked up to be. I find the dated graphics, lack of quality games and no online integration to be somewhat of a snore-fest. Also playing games WITHOUT achievements now feels boring. I have no inspiration to complete a game or trying to discover all the the things a developer hid in the game.

Hopefully this will change once Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles comes out.

360won, but didn't really own. A 27k difference isn't all that much, only ended up selling 5% more than the Wii.

So my question is what happened to MP3 Nintendo's flagship title? Exactly!!! Each company can attribute well known games for an increase in sales.. And let's not forget that the software sales of the 360 has continuously owned the wii/PS3 WITHOUT HALO... What's the fanboys excuse for that one.. :|

Metroid Prime was never Nintendo's flagship. :| It's a good series, but it's never sold nearly as well as Smash Bros, Zelda, or Mario.

Wii is not a software driven console, I doubt the release of Mario Galaxy will boost it as much as Halo as boosted 360's sale.

I don't think either group got owned. 360 beat out the Wii with Halo 3 but just barely. Halo 3 moved some hardware but not enough to claim any kind of ownage, considering that Wii Sports has been moving those types of hardware numbers all year. However, the 360 did manage to take number one spot so no ownage on the Wii side either, although I think Reggie's comments about Halo shifting hardware are probably vindicated.

Microsofts biggest game that was only out for a few days before these numbers were taken.

Hence my point.

I'm saying that if Halo 3 was released on September 1st then there would be a more significant gap. As it is, the dominant Wii had it's monthly hardware sales toppled by one game that hadn't been on the market long when these numbers were taken.

I am picking option B. To put it in simple terms, Halo 3 was big. Very big. Apparently even the biggest. Nintendo had nothing. How did Nintendo manage to stay so close to Microsoft in terms of hardware sales, though? If Microsoft's most anticipated title can barely scrape past the Wii while the Wii itself had nothing major to boast about, then that's ownage to Microsoft I believe.

Get over it, the Wii hardware sales don't reflect on the quality of games it supplies.

its a gimmick, cheap outdated technology, aimed towards kiddies an casuals and fueled by crappy shovel ware.

Actually, quite a bunch of cows were pre-damage controlling saying that everyone who wanted H3 already had a 360 and thus there wouldn't be a notable hardware sales increase.

How can X360 only outsell the wii by 20,000.. Nintendo had no major releases.  Had a gaming drought. Microsoft should have bundled Halo 3 with the X360 Halo 3 edition. I bet if they did that the X360 sales would have been way higher. Look at when sony bundeled Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core in Japan and it sold like 200,000 PSP in the first week doubling the DS in sales.

If Halo 3 can't do a damn about Wii sales, we know how it's going to end for M$... they will barely sell over 25 millions console.

I see 35 million. Maybe 20 million for PS3.
