Poll Poll: Would you be OK with detachable next gen controllers? (56 votes)

Definitely. 23%
Probably. 4%
Maybe. 21%
Unlikely. 9%
Nope. 43%

SW, would you guys be okay if the next gen controllers would be detachable to to 2 or more parts?

Other than being able to be used in more postures for comfort, it may also be used VR so you may not have to get a new VR controller although companies shouldn't probably stop themselves from releasing better controllers after next gen launch.

Other than the possibility of another ease of step towards betterment of the VR gaming scene, the makers might be able to create new controllers with better ergonomics while having better or even more inputs; like being able to easily use the ring fingers and pinkies.

Biggest issue I could think of is possibly more expensive consoles since these might be included in the base model and more expensive additional controllers.

Device integrity and battery life IMO aren't much deal breakers but it may have some compromise too depending on pricing.

I'm not closed off to the possibility, but sacrificing ergonomics to attempt to push infantile/gimmicky gameplay concepts will be considered a fatal misstep, so much so I would withhold from a purchase until down the road.

That would suck but so far, I think ergonomics can get quite a boost if the controllers are at least 2 parts since you are able to have more several positions comfortably available to the user. General shape and button positioning need to be improved for the new design, definitely.

Totally. Detachable is an option. Those who don't like it don't need to do it. An extra option is never a bad thing

Depends, as long as the system is like the switch and allows multiple controllers, it's all gravy.

Depends on the console

It seem like an unnecessary idea for PlayStation or Xbox, but I makes sense Nintendo since they've been doing that sorta thing. I never thought any controller I've used needed that kind of option, I've had any comfort issues. Maybe if they re-release the OG ps1 with remastered they should think about a cool controller update as well

I'm okay with current gen detachable controllers, the Switch Joycon are outstanding. Sony has reason to emulate the idea, and be able to use the two-piece setup for "Move type" VR stuff but that makes it more expensive, even though some will never use the feature and M$ has no reason to at all so I doubt this will become commonplace.

I see.

Looking at the DS4 (gyro, lights) and the PSVR Headset, it can seen a natural evolution of the PS brand though.

Perhaps a new detachable controller style could give us something more ergonomic and have more buttons to improve gameplay.

Definitely more comfy. Imagine just separating your hands and lying them on each of your side during a couch session. That's already a far more neutral position. You could even play in bed and actively shift positions way easier without letting go of the controllers.

Oh wow. Time for 9th Gen power glove!? J/K.. or maybe.. hmm.. nahh.. hmm.. I do wonder if gloves can become a thing for future stuff. Gestures and able to use far more inputs. I guess that's for way too far down the line huh?

Do you mean like the Switch?

I think the joycons are useful for their intention but in terms of the button size, ergonomics and button positions, it leaves me wanting. All the same, they serve their purpose and there are alternatives any way. As long as there is a purpose for them, why not? :)

Like the Nintendo Switch? Nintendo needs to call their consoles what they are, The Nintendo Gimmick. Nintendo Gimmick 2, 3, 4. It's obviously what their consoles are.

Depends on the functionality and the system. I'm more inclined towards the traditional controller but something like what the Switch is doing seems fine to me. I not really all that interested in VR though so that kind of functionality isn't too compelling for me.

I tried playing Mario Kart on the Switch with the joycons as one whole controller and did not like it. I'm hoping the rumor of a Switch-esq PlayStation are false. Sony doesn't need to waste money in the handheld space anymore.

Wait. What? xD

I guess that still has to be done specially for handicaps that might be used to having a unibody controller. This isn't sarcasm btw. I hope better controls for physical handicaps and hastening of body recovery/augmentation/prosthetics at mass market price.

Something more ergonomic. The Switch default handheld controllers are compromised for size and from my imagination of a PS/Xbox controllers, it probably won't be for 1 controller splitting into two for 2 players but more for ergonomics and probably better/more inputs.

I doubt those rumors and this won't really be for handhelds or at least any traditional handheld controller.

My problem with his statements are that they are a sweeping generalization based entirely on a slanted opinion. Detachable or not, the Joycon works. Its analog sticks, shoulder, and face buttons are responsive and functional. To call it garbage is erroneous.

I am a fan of detachable/modular controllers. I think the form factor of the Wii controller was theoretically perfect.

It could be used modularly:

1. Wii/nunchuk for motion controls

2. B.O.S.S. for normal games that need normal controllers like NSMBU or Punch out

3. Arcade Stick-it could attach as an arcade stick for stuff like Tatsunoko vs Capcom

4. Light gun attatchment for light gun games

This is the perfect idea imo. now the execution during the Wii gen wasn't something to write home about but that is how a controller can best be utilized moving forward.

There's nothing more comfortable than the wiimote + nunchuck (Or separated joy con) way of holding a controller. So relaxed. Feels great. Those saying no are living in the stone age of gaming.
