Simple joke in Portal 2 sparks controversy.... I am shocked... though I probably shouldn't be. As a father myself I have to shake my head at any parent who can't explain an innocent joke to their child and help clarify to them how important they are regardless of a bit of off color humor. What do you guys make of this? Daddy overreact much? Or is Valve an evil fearmongering adopted kid - hating corporation bound for hell?

I heard about this in GGD. It's ridiculous that something like this is extremley offensive while something like South Park or Family Guy is perfectly okay.

American news coverage is making a big deal about this. Not surprised really, US News is absolute garbage.

So apparently Portal 2 is an educational game, and Sony made it. Well that was my "lol" moment of the day.

They were also wrong because it isn't rated E it is rated E10+ so it isn't for everyone.

Lol. I didn't even catch that. How old was the girl again? Wasn't she ten? Maybe the ESRB expects 10 year olds to understand the difference between an innocent joke and cheap shots at their very existence? Either way, that dad had me laughing when he said "I didn't know what to do! I still don't know what to do!" How about talking to your kid and making sure she wasn't too bothered by it? How about reassuring her that it was just a joke and you love her? If you don't know how to do that then you shouldn't have kids, seriously. Making a big deal out of nothing, man... damn.

Didn't even bother watching the whole thing. The news people made quite a few errors lol. I didn't know Portal 2 was a education game. And it just a joke and a tame one at that. The parents are being over sensitive.

Anyone else loses faith in humanity everytime someone takes something out of context and creates these stupid stories around to show how "malicious" things are, when in reality they're inofensive?

It seems like all people do nowadays is look for negative things instead of just chill back and have some fun.

I have a friend who's cousin was adopted, and I just used twitter and told my friend's cousin to not buy this game, and also I told him to boycott all future VALVE and Sony products since the problem was found in the PS3 copy of Portal 2 according to the news clip in the OP. I feel his family and my family are united on this front, we can't stand for this.

Such a tragedy that I had to watch...and I had to laugh how they said the blame was being passed, lol.

Thankfully, I have a Twitter account, and I'm making a difference with it! :P Mostly I just read about Celebrities getting their hair cut on Twitter, so this worked out pretty good.

I also am planting a tree in my backyard in honor of this whole event, and so that I will always remember about Valve and their adoption policies.

On a sidenote, it's certaily not news that the average human being is trying very hard to find something to be offended about.

Edit: Not to mention that this particular person failed to understand the context of the joke.

No, the news reporters/journalists have a duty to report accurate information to their audience. That is not accurate information. By implying that Valve (oops, Sony I mean) made this joke in an "educational" game it spins the story. Notice the emphasis on educational throughout the piece too.

Nowhere on the packaging or anywhere in the game's promotional material does it say the game is educational. This is literally the first time I've heard "Portal" and "educational" used in the same sentence.

Well done, American media. Well done.

I wonder if Valve got that call from the reporter.

MEANWHILE AT VALVE!

Receptionist: Gabe, you have a vall on line one. A reporter is asking something about a insensitive orphan joke in Portal 2?

Gabe: What? Really?

Receptionist: Yes Gabe they seem rather upset about being told by Sony to call us.

Gabe:...yeah...tell them I'll call them back. *snicker*

"Gabes thoughts" Mental note to self, more orphan jokes in our next game. Maybe make it about orphans being made fun of being orphans. Make sure it's rated E for everyone, and send the father a free copy."

First time I heard Portal 2 was tagged as "educational." Doesn't that part come after his repeated hints at killing you? Shouldn't that spark some controversy? And where was the media in the first Portal where GLaDOS says "It also says you were adpoted; so that's funny too."

I think bringing this over the news is the most moronic thing our society can do, God damn, are we going down the gutter. This thing should be resolved privately, in their family, not on the God damn news, man.

MrSelf-Destruct

I watched the vid., and it pokes fun for not having parents.. and adoption.. which is a no go.

If i were adopted, or if my kid was adopted, i would be pissed as ** at that game. The quality of a joke is subjective, so i guess it may seem cool to some.
