I'm fine with humor and video games... but I don't like when humor in video games makes fun of a very specific demographic... that stuff shouldn't be in games... period.
You guys seriously don't see the the wrong in this..
its easy for you to say "its not bad" when you aren't adopted...
Well jokes are subjective
Also i dont see fat people up in smokes
Led_poison
unless you have some dissorder... their is a reason people are fat... (me included :P) jokes about fat people aren't bad because unless your an overly sensitive teenage girl... one can look at themselves and be like.. "yeah well I am might as well laugh at it"
however adoptios is a much more sensistive subject.
You don't think the game is being ironic in having robots give out dumb insults about being adopted when they don't parents themselves? Its taken out of context: its more about the robots coming up with dopey insults then have an agenda against being adopted.I'm fine with humor and video games... but I don't like when humor in video games makes fun of a very specific demographic... that stuff shouldn't be in games... period.

They raise a valid point. It shouldn't be E for everyone.

Crude jokes about adoption and obesity are something considered bullying in schools and pretty bad at that age, where your brain can not yet comprehend such terrible statements towards your kind. Also, glados pretty much finishes it off with "what's wrong with abortion?" And once you're alone with her, she proceeds to say she just said that to bother wheatley, and tagged the whole giving chell on adoption as a horrible thing.
I think it's needed for the game, but that they didn't review it properly.

1. Five seconds later, GLaDOS calls Wheatley out on it, and points out there's nothing wrong with being adopted and that Wheatley himself has no parents either.
2. Wheatley is explicitly referenced throughout the vast majority of the game as being purposefully designed to be the biggest moron that ever existed. He was made the be the most completely, pathetically stupid thing that could ever have existed. That alone takes all credibility out of any insult he throws at you.
3. It should be fantastically obvious to anyone that has actually listened to the full exchange, that the intention of the joke was to poke fun at Wheatley's lack of intelligence. Not adopted children.

I was just going to post basically the same things, but you did it so well I'll just say good job sir.
Some people really need to take some responsibility as parents and just talk to their kids instead of calling the media or making a you tube video....sheesh

reading this... I change my mind on the issue. I hadn't played the game. Wow... the media sucks. Now everyone that sees that newscast is gonna have a bad taste in their mouth that hasn't played it.
Gotta love making up controversy... going to "Ole Miss" (The University of Mississippi) and living in the south... you'd think I'd be used to it by now.
They're basically insulted that a childish and not very bright robot is trying to discourage you with less than mature insults. If this it all it takes to be offended, you'd better not turn on your tv, read any books, talk to anyone and absolutely DO NOT leave your house.
Really...... I'm all for sensitivity but everything is offensive to someone. The particular scene in question even makes it clear that the game is not trying to offend anyone.
I'm amazed he did'nt pick up on the twilight zone of comedy mixed with slightly creepy tragedy this game resides in at the very beginning or possibly the adoption jokes that occur prior to this particular incident.
He could have also paid attention to the context of the joke. Remember the cake meme from Portal 1? They're making fun of the AI's inability to properly understand the human thought process... GLADOS thinks that cake was a fine incentive to make you perform lethal tests because humans like cake!
They're not even jokes as much as they're quirky absurdities that become amusing after prolonged exposure!
I won't even touch upon the fact that a 10 year old chinese girl is bloody aware that her white parents probably are'nt the biological ones if she's ever left the house, let alone the fact that the fool mentioned that they were merely waiting for her to "be ready for the talk" since she was, as admitted, aware of her biological conundrum.
It's almost beautifull in a very sad way, how a man like this canl et his own insecurities be affected by a joke taken out of context. This person might seem sympathetic in his "willingness to not make an issue out of it" but the fact that it's news really says it all.
As mentioned we should be tolerant of eachother but taking offense to this kind of **** is really offensive to me.
Hopefully, the girl did'nt care personally because if it was a big deal to her, she's not going to survive school.
I'll reitterate: If it takes so little to get offended, you can't interact with human beings at all and you can't come in contact with any media either.
Last and not least: Usually, if you're an orphan in a game, you're guaranteed to become powerfull enough to kill god while amassing more fame, wealth and sexual encounters than the rest of the world combined. How's that for bias?
I'm disgusted with the desperate attention craving people have these days.

The only reason people think this is an issue is because they think the game is rated E, and that the game is an educational children's game. How the media can be this incorrect baffles me. Nowhere in any of Portal 2's advertising does it claim to be educational, or even a game aimed at kids. How can they also ignore the E-10 rating that is literally right in front of them on the box? The only explanation is that someone did not know what they were talking about.
I remember that part and I was actually shocked that valve would put something like that. Like honestly imagine if a small kid was playing that loveable game and all of a sudden that came up and they were adopted. I honestly felt it was unnessecary while playing because theres certian things you dont joke about.
but w/e the funniest parts are the idiots who found his facebook page and because he likes tea party and republican there calling him racist... when he adopted a chinese daughter LOL

you have a kid and your on system wars?me2002Actually I have four kids, so what of it? I work at home and sit in front of my computer all day doing some of the most boring work known to man. Between projects I come here to be entertained and talk about something I enjoy just like everyone else. I guess since I'm a parent I should have to go talk about politics and the weather and stuff, right? Does that mean everyone else here should.. I dunno... grow up? :o
I think bringing this over the news is the most moronic thing our society can do, God damn, are we going down the gutter. This thing should be resolved privately, in their family, not on the God damn news, man.
[QUOTE="MrSelf-Destruct"]
Simple joke in Portal 2 sparks controversy.... I am shocked... though I probably shouldn't be. As a father myself I have to shake my head at any parent who can't explain an innocent joke to their child and help clarify to them how important they are regardless of a bit of off color humor. What do you guys make of this? Daddy overreact much? Or is Valve an evil fearmongering adopted kid - hating corporation bound for hell?
Lucianu
I watched the vid., and it pokes fun for not having parents.. and adoption.. which is a no go.
If i were adopted, or if my kid was adopted, i would be pissed as ** at that game. The quality of a joke is subjective, so i guess it may seem cool to some.

Rape? Oh, you mean the ditched audio about how they made their AI? Farfetched......
Anyway, my previous rant aside, where was his offense at the themes of torture and death? He did'nt mind when GLADOS literrally told you that you'd be doing these lethal tests (plenty emphasis on how deadly this is) till death?
He did'nt mind the implications that you'd be reanimated to continue your personal hell?
Did'nt mind the constant accusations of you being a murderous person and terrible in every way?
Did he really ignore every single insult, just waiting for that one that applied to his daughter?
I find it insulting and offensive that even a single person can understand this persons point of view: That out of every single not entirely politicaly correct word uttered in this game, the only offensive sentence said is an out of context joke.
If you're this sensitive you're not fit to coexist with other human beings. Personally, I think he's just another attention whore and I'll disregard his attempts at a sympathetic angle, thank you very much.
Edit: Besides, Valve did not rate their game. Portal 1 was "T" in fact.
