I'm fine with humor and video games... but I don't like when humor in video games makes fun of a very specific demographic... that stuff shouldn't be in games... period.

You guys seriously don't see the the wrong in this..

its easy for you to say "its not bad" when you aren't adopted...

unless you have some dissorder... their is a reason people are fat... (me included :P) jokes about fat people aren't bad because unless your an overly sensitive teenage girl... one can look at themselves and be like.. "yeah well I am might as well laugh at it"

however adoptios is a much more sensistive subject.

You don't think the game is being ironic in having robots give out dumb insults about being adopted when they don't parents themselves? Its taken out of context: its more about the robots coming up with dopey insults then have an agenda against being adopted.

They raise a valid point. It shouldn't be E for everyone.

Nintendo_Ownes7

It's not it is rated E10+ for Everyone 10 and up.

Crude jokes about adoption and obesity are something considered bullying in schools and pretty bad at that age, where your brain can not yet comprehend such terrible statements towards your kind. Also, glados pretty much finishes it off with "what's wrong with abortion?" And once you're alone with her, she proceeds to say she just said that to bother wheatley, and tagged the whole giving chell on adoption as a horrible thing.

I think it's needed for the game, but that they didn't review it properly.

1. Five seconds later, GLaDOS calls Wheatley out on it, and points out there's nothing wrong with being adopted and that Wheatley himself has no parents either.

2. Wheatley is explicitly referenced throughout the vast majority of the game as being purposefully designed to be the biggest moron that ever existed. He was made the be the most completely, pathetically stupid thing that could ever have existed. That alone takes all credibility out of any insult he throws at you.

3. It should be fantastically obvious to anyone that has actually listened to the full exchange, that the intention of the joke was to poke fun at Wheatley's lack of intelligence. Not adopted children.

I was just going to post basically the same things, but you did it so well I'll just say good job sir.

Some people really need to take some responsibility as parents and just talk to their kids instead of calling the media or making a you tube video....sheesh

reading this... I change my mind on the issue. I hadn't played the game. Wow... the media sucks. Now everyone that sees that newscast is gonna have a bad taste in their mouth that hasn't played it.

Gotta love making up controversy... going to "Ole Miss" (The University of Mississippi) and living in the south... you'd think I'd be used to it by now.

They're basically insulted that a childish and not very bright robot is trying to discourage you with less than mature insults. If this it all it takes to be offended, you'd better not turn on your tv, read any books, talk to anyone and absolutely DO NOT leave your house.

Really...... I'm all for sensitivity but everything is offensive to someone. The particular scene in question even makes it clear that the game is not trying to offend anyone.

I'm amazed he did'nt pick up on the twilight zone of comedy mixed with slightly creepy tragedy this game resides in at the very beginning or possibly the adoption jokes that occur prior to this particular incident.

He could have also paid attention to the context of the joke. Remember the cake meme from Portal 1? They're making fun of the AI's inability to properly understand the human thought process... GLADOS thinks that cake was a fine incentive to make you perform lethal tests because humans like cake!

They're not even jokes as much as they're quirky absurdities that become amusing after prolonged exposure!

I won't even touch upon the fact that a 10 year old chinese girl is bloody aware that her white parents probably are'nt the biological ones if she's ever left the house, let alone the fact that the fool mentioned that they were merely waiting for her to "be ready for the talk" since she was, as admitted, aware of her biological conundrum.

It's almost beautifull in a very sad way, how a man like this canl et his own insecurities be affected by a joke taken out of context. This person might seem sympathetic in his "willingness to not make an issue out of it" but the fact that it's news really says it all.

As mentioned we should be tolerant of eachother but taking offense to this kind of **** is really offensive to me.

Hopefully, the girl did'nt care personally because if it was a big deal to her, she's not going to survive school.

I'll reitterate: If it takes so little to get offended, you can't interact with human beings at all and you can't come in contact with any media either.

Last and not least: Usually, if you're an orphan in a game, you're guaranteed to become powerfull enough to kill god while amassing more fame, wealth and sexual encounters than the rest of the world combined. How's that for bias?

I'm disgusted with the desperate attention craving people have these days.

Seriously, people need to get a grip on themselves.

Yup the computer who insults your slim character for being fat also insults you for being adopted...I think I see a patern of baseless insults. Does that make it insensitive? Nope. I guess Portal 2 should be heralded as being a advocate for people with brain damage?

I feel bad for the guy, that must have been horrifying to hear right there with his daughter in the room. I think you guys have to realize that in a lot of cases, young kids don't fully understand context. They take what they hear at face value, and they hear 2 characters saying its bad to adopted.

That may or not may be true. When I was growing up in school, I never felt bad about being adopted. Then again, the person in question might be viewing things differently.

No, gladOS is a mean cynical robot. She has 0 empathy for Chell as she tried to "murder" her. She just wants Chell to feel bad. An adult person won't care for this, as it's something inherent of a storyline.

Tell that to a 10y/o kid who was either abandoned or his parents died thus making him adopted. It's a touchy matter. Hell, JK simmons (Cave Johnson) didn't want to read a line of Caroline's transformation into gladOS because it sounded like rape. We should call him oversensitive because it's a touchy matter for him?

Believe me, I loooooove portal2, but I can agree the rating is incorrect. Nothing more, nothing else.

I find it impressive how some people avoid the matter saying: well southpark does it worse. since when is SP for 10 year old audience?

Well actually in the video I think he says that the little girl doesn't know yet, but it's something that she'll start to question soon, if not already, because she's Chinese and the rest of the family is white.

It's not Valves fault that a parents are incapable of raising there children these days. Let me educate your children with south park. hey, it's a toon! And it tells a lot about how corrupt the society is. Your child will be very aware of the dangers.

Really, dumbing down the reality to a joke won't make it any better.

its rated E10+ if your 10 and haven't been introduced to a bit of trash talk, you probably stay indoors too much. not to mention this is an obvious comedic and not really malicious act. Even if it can be a bit offensive I don't see the problem with it, I think introducing some negative portrayals of some things at a youn age is a bad thing for them. Better to have them asking questions young versus being an overly sensative wanker when they are an adult.

Eh, that's really not the vibe I'm getting from this guy at all. I don't think its Valve's fault but I don't think its fair to say that family is incapable of raising children. :| Maybe the game should have been rated Teen, I dunno. That's a very off color and sensitive joke in a game that is very appealing to kids, and yes, educational.

Other Dad: "WHAT AND OUTRAGE! Where did I put my lawyers ambulance chaser card! How dare they point out the truth to my daughter!"

When one of your voice actors rejects to read some lines because they sound like rape, you know you're pulling the wit to maximum levels.

The only reason people think this is an issue is because they think the game is rated E, and that the game is an educational children's game. How the media can be this incorrect baffles me. Nowhere in any of Portal 2's advertising does it claim to be educational, or even a game aimed at kids. How can they also ignore the E-10 rating that is literally right in front of them on the box? The only explanation is that someone did not know what they were talking about.

I remember that part and I was actually shocked that valve would put something like that. Like honestly imagine if a small kid was playing that loveable game and all of a sudden that came up and they were adopted. I honestly felt it was unnessecary while playing because theres certian things you dont joke about.

but w/e the funniest parts are the idiots who found his facebook page and because he likes tea party and republican there calling him racist... when he adopted a chinese daughter LOL

Let me educate your children with south park. hey, it's a toon! And it tells a lot about how corrupt the society is. Your child will be very aware of the dangers.Really, dumbing down the reality to a joke won't make it any better.blitzcloud

Does portal spout profanity and sexual references at every twist and turn? Nope. I guess some people are more sensative about a silly joke than I imagined. If your child took something like "being an adopted is actually terrible" from that. Yes I would put some sort of scrupulation on how well you are parenting your child if you even allow them to think that without correcting them.

It's not wether it's a bad joke or not, it's that it's downright rediculous to get that upset about it. STOP THE PRESSES! a video game made a orphan joke and it's rated E for everyone.

Actually I have four kids, so what of it? I work at home and sit in front of my computer all day doing some of the most boring work known to man. Between projects I come here to be entertained and talk about something I enjoy just like everyone else. I guess since I'm a parent I should have to go talk about politics and the weather and stuff, right? Does that mean everyone else here should.. I dunno... grow up? :o

I heard the world educational a few times, E for everyone, not E for educational :P I can see what that parent was talking about, but of course I don't expect proper coverage from news channel.

I think bringing this over the news is the most moronic thing our society can do, God damn, are we going down the gutter. This thing should be resolved privately, in their family, not on the God damn news, man.

[QUOTE="MrSelf-Destruct"]

Simple joke in Portal 2 sparks controversy.... I am shocked... though I probably shouldn't be. As a father myself I have to shake my head at any parent who can't explain an innocent joke to their child and help clarify to them how important they are regardless of a bit of off color humor. What do you guys make of this? Daddy overreact much? Or is Valve an evil fearmongering adopted kid - hating corporation bound for hell?

Lucianu

I watched the vid., and it pokes fun for not having parents.. and adoption.. which is a no go.

If i were adopted, or if my kid was adopted, i would be pissed as ** at that game. The quality of a joke is subjective, so i guess it may seem cool to some.

The thing is that there is a proper place for any kind of joke. Family Guy is a glaring example that nothing is off limits. If it was an adoption joke in Dora the Explorer or Hanna Montana then yeah.. I'd find it pretty messed up and be fairly upset about it. But this is in a video game that though it was rated for kids ten and up was not actually directed at kids. I'm sure Valve understood that most people who played this game would get the joke, maybe even laugh at it, and most certainly not find it offensive. I watch things with my kids that catch me off guard all the time and find myself having to explain things to them. Its part of being a parent. You can't always be in a safe zone, so its rather silly to get offended when something comes along that hurts your kid's feelings or has them asking you awkward questions.

Sorry, but they lied to you. Glados was just posing to make wheatley mad.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GC9HVuV9RMs&feature=player_detailpage#t=571s

Check how at 09:55 what glados whispers to chell.

(whispers) For the record: You ARE adopted, and that's TERRIBLE.

I believe its you interepreting that the wrong way. GlaDOS is saying that its terrible that she dosn't know her biological parents, not that Chell is a terrible person for being adopted

You would be right, if we ignored all the charecter development up to that point of the game. its silly to think GlaDOS is doing anything but defending Chell in that conversation

Rape? Oh, you mean the ditched audio about how they made their AI? Farfetched......

Anyway, my previous rant aside, where was his offense at the themes of torture and death? He did'nt mind when GLADOS literrally told you that you'd be doing these lethal tests (plenty emphasis on how deadly this is) till death?

He did'nt mind the implications that you'd be reanimated to continue your personal hell?

Did'nt mind the constant accusations of you being a murderous person and terrible in every way?

Did he really ignore every single insult, just waiting for that one that applied to his daughter?

I find it insulting and offensive that even a single person can understand this persons point of view: That out of every single not entirely politicaly correct word uttered in this game, the only offensive sentence said is an out of context joke.

If you're this sensitive you're not fit to coexist with other human beings. Personally, I think he's just another attention whore and I'll disregard his attempts at a sympathetic angle, thank you very much.

Edit: Besides, Valve did not rate their game. Portal 1 was "T" in fact.

Editedit: AND IN CASE SOMEONE FORGOT: EVERYONE IS INSULTED BY SOMETHING.

I'm not an orphan nor have I adopted a child so I can't really guess how the dad or the daughter must be feeling. From the video it seems like the daughter is not ready to talk about the whole issue (which is fine), and the dad wants to let her bring up the issue when she's comfortable rather than a joke that belittles orphans. I wouldn't call it an over reaction just yet, it's a silly little news story that's going to end up in the trash along with SeXbox, No Russian, Bullet Storm is the Worst game in the world and the countless other stories gamers have seen.

well, it is a sensitive issue for parents who have adopted children but the line in Portal 2 is taken out of context and is only 1 part of that piece of dialouge.

I have a suggestion to the parent for how to "explain" it to the children: "It's the bad guys saying that, and they're wrong."
