Condemned 2 opens with our hero drunk, high on pills, and getting kicked out of a bar. He then proceeds to follow a strange homeless man down a dark alley on the promise of more booze, only to discover that some freaky ass demon raided the homeless guy's stash. This sets the stage for all the crazy sh*t that goes down later on and is in my opinion one of the finest examples of how to introduce players to your game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hWNIXR6F6yE

Nier's opening is f*cking brilliant. We're given absolutely no hint as to what is going on. All we know is that it takes place in the future, and the world seems to be in some kind of post apocalyptic state. It's here that we are introduced to two of the main characters (or are they?) who are on the verge of starvation. Some strange sh*t happens with monsters and a book, and then we're immediately thrusted over 1000 years into the future. Freakin awesome.

Post yours!

demon's souls. it teaches the player the basic controls like you'd expect, but it also teaches the player that they are going to die but that isn't the end of the world. each death teaches the player something.

This wins. I stopped playing the game because I want the experience of GoW 3 to feel as fresh and new as long as possible,

Not a fan of tutorials. I guess I'll go with Undead Asylum, since it actually lets you play it.

I liked Fallout 3's opening levels, which introduced you to the world of the vault and a cast of characters. Including Liam Neeson.

And then the game froze as soon as I finished.

SR3's first level was great even on Onlive, where I first played it. That's a ringing endorsement in itself.

I didn't like SR3's at all. I was bored because there was absolutly no tense action or feeling of death. The game is just way too easy.

I don't think Demon's Souls opening level is all that special. Aside from the surprise ass kicking it delivers you towards the end of the level it's a pretty basic tutorial.

That said, game is still a masterpiece.

This, it's a training chapter, but unlike most trainings, it doesn't feel forced or boring, and does a very solid job of familiarizing you with the game...

The boss fight and getting falcon punched by a dragon was what popped into my head but yes the rest of the tutorial serves its purpose and nothing more. Not too many tutorials really seem like that big of a deal to be honest. Dragon Age Origins's multiple openings were pretty cool.

The Dark Souls tutorial actually gave me a flavor of the highs and lows I would experience throughout the game. So I killed the BFD (big fat demon) and was feeling pretty good about myself since I had made it through the level without dying once. Outside the building I had just read the 'good job' message and instead of holding down the sprint button long enough to run along, I had an awkward moment messing up the camera angle and rolled off the side to my death due to sprint and roll sharing the same button.

Bioshock, batman arkham asylum, mass effect 2, Alan wake. The first gears of war, fallout 3. all great introssts106mat

I can't believe I didn't think of those two. Both were flippen awesome openings.

Fallout 3's opening was interesting, I'll give it that. Gears' and Alan Wake's opening levels weren't anything memorable imo.

*EDIT*

Just realised you were talking about Arkham Asylum's opener. I haven't played that game yet. I was thinking of Arkham City, and I thought that opening was awesome.

Yeah, I thought the opening level in Alan Wake was rather bland. I like everything else about it though. It's kind of repetitive but still very good.

What's wrong with walking and talking? Giving you a gun and throwing random enemy's at you would have just weakenedthe impact of that opening.

In Mass Effect 2, giving you a gun and throwing enemy's at you would have weakened the impact because it is a mediocre game, if it happened in a game like Uncharted , it would have enhanced the impact because the combat isn't so weak and mediocre,

Giving you a gun...whether the game was good or bad would not make the opening better. The entire beginning was about soaking in the atmosphere and various story elements.
