Not an opening level, but the firearms tutorial was nicely done in Sleeping Dogs.freedomfreak
Agreed, the way it's done was pretty clever.

Came here to post this. One of the best openings I have ever seen in any game. The pacing and spectacle were perfect. The rest of the game fell short but this opening 30 mins or so were beyond epic

The Witcher 2, where you relive the death of Foltest through gameplay that's essentially told as a flashback interrogation.

This, it's a training chapter, but unlike most trainings, it doesn't feel forced or boring, and does a very solid job of familiarizing you with the game...
I actually hate this intro now. First time was fine but nmow everytime I start the game I just want to skip it.
In Mass Effect 2, giving you a gun and throwing enemy's at you would have weakened the impact because it is a mediocre game, if it happened in a game like Uncharted , it would have enhanced the impact because the combat isn't so weak and mediocre,[QUOTE="RageQuitter69"][QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"]
What's wrong with walking and talking? Giving you a gun and throwing random enemy's at you would have just weakenedthe impact of that opening.

Giving you a gun...whether the game was good or bad would not make the opening better. The entire beginning was about soaking in the atmosphere and various story elements.
Go and watch a movie, games should combine story and gameplay flawlessly and if they can't, gameplay should be the main focus, not the other way round.[QUOTE="JangoWuzHere"][QUOTE="RageQuitter69"] In Mass Effect 2, giving you a gun and throwing enemy's at you would have weakened the impact because it is a mediocre game, if it happened in a game like Uncharted , it would have enhanced the impact because the combat isn't so weak and mediocre,RageQuitter69

does it have to be a 'tutorial' level? Can it just be the first level?campzor
Anything like that is fine. It's just that, typically, the first level usually is a tutorial.
Metal Gear Solid 4
Uncharted 2
God of war 3
SSX
And oddly enough, I DO love the opening to Bioshock, despite the game (played 4 or 5 hours) being rather lackluster.

Hercules. Hello!
This... it was the quickest i ever fell in love with a game.I liked Fallout 3's opening levels, which introduced you to the world of the vault and a cast of characters. Including Liam Neeson.
And then the game froze as soon as I finished.
