The last 2 GOTY have been gimmies (at least I knew what they would be), but this year I'm not so sure.Gears and RE4 were easy to pick, they both were awesome and Gears was a new franchise, and RE4 revolutionized the series and the genre.

The Orange Box is good, but it's kind of crazy with so many games in one, but then again the GOTY has to be liked by a lot of people so I think it has a good chance, but it is still crazy especially with Half Life 2 packaged in.

One would think Halo 3 would have a shot, however I don't see the entire GS staff embracing it.

World in Conflict is original, but it seems somewhat esoteric, too esoteric for GOTY.

I wonder if Burning Crusade could have a shot.It is an expansion, and the more I think about it the less likely I think it is.WoW won in 2004 but it was pretty revolutionary and addicting at the time.BC is kind of the same game, but it is an interesting thought.

Now that I think about it, this year is like a rematch of 2004.Halo, Half Life and WoW are all in it.

Bioshock didn't get a super high score like some of the other games (but with the gimped rating system it is harder to tell what the score means). That said, I think I could see Bioshock making a run, having a good story, original setting, interesting game play and universal appeal.

Then you got all the crap yet to come out, Crysis, Mass Effect, Assassins Creed, and Mario among other have a shot.

There is my extend analysis.

For those who skip it, I think this is a tough year to pick and a bunch of games haven't come out yet, but here's the ones that I think have the best shot at it:

1.Orange Box

2.Bioshock

3.Halo 3

4.Wow

5.World in Conflict

Out of the games that haven't come out yet (let's just say they all get 9.5s) I'd say the ones that have the best shots at winning are:

1.Assassins Creed

2.Mario

3.Mass Effect

4.Crysis

5.Rock Band

Maybe if Call of Duty 4 is really freaking good, it could make a run, but I think it is hard for pure FPS to win.Serious Sam was the last one to win I think, and that was when PC and console was separate. Same deal with Crysis.

The more I think about it, the more I think Bioshock has a good chance.Halo 3 not so much.Halo 2 didn't even win best xbox game in 2004.

Honestly it's going to come down to Mass Effect, Rock Band, or Super Mario Galaxy.

Nothing stands out as a clear winner yet. I think we'll have to wait until after Crysis, Mass Effect and SMG are reviewed before we can start predicting properly.

It would have to be really freaking good. The Mario name is both a plus and a curse.Depends how revolutionary the Wii controls really are.It could win at some other review sites, but it would have the toughest time at GS.

From what I've seen and played, I'd like to see Bioshshock and Mario Galaxy as the top contenders...

Mass Effect will probably be my personal GOTY, but I don't think everyone on GS Will go along with it.The genre isn't for everyone.Bioware has been pumping out great games like Mass Effect for awhile so although Mass Effect is different from its predecessors, what will make it good is what made previous Bioware games good.

I'd say Halo 3 has the best shot at it at the moment.

I remembered. It is a quality game, but a sequel through and through.Better in every way, but still very similar to its predecessor. Even though we remembered I don't think GS will.It is a PS2 game for crying out loud.A lock for PS2 GOTY but little else.

If Rock Band is the best rhythm game ever it has a very good chance, but I don't know.Something will be wrong with it. Rhythm games are very similar to one another, I think that will hurt it.

Mass Effect by simple order of elimination. Halo 3 can't win because its a Halo game, to name it GOTY over other titles would be an insult to the industry. Crysis can't win because of its system requirements, World in Conflict can't win because its a strategy game, Bioshock scored too low, SMG and MP3 can't win because they are on the Wii (meaning they won't score high enough), and finally Assassin's Creed can't win because it doesn't have a chainsaw. Therefore we get left with Uncharted, a 10-12 hour game with no MP, and mother****ing Mass Effect. Tough choice.

I don't think the low score kills Bioshock. The numbers are so worthless nowadays anyway with only half point differentials, that I think a 9 could beat a 9.5 given the right circumstances.GOTYs tend to be original with universal appeal.Bioshock has that, while Halo 3 does not.Portal has that too, and the rest of the Orange box is pretty good, so that is why I have it leading. If Bioshock got a 9.5 I'd have it leading.

OB can't win because its a compilation, no self respecting journalist is going to give a compilation GOTY. However Portal is definitely a contender, but I think the GS staffers are going to have trouble voting for a game that lasts maybe 3 hours with competition like Mass Effect. The problem with Bioshock's score is that giving it GOTY indicates that a game that was rated a 9 is better than 2 games (so far) that scored 9.5 (Halo 3, WiC).

I know what you are saying about OB, but Episode 2 and Team Fortress have to count for something. Also when Jeff says things like I played Portal 4 times, I think it has a chance.

Ugh, anything but Halo 3 hopefully. There are too many great games that Halo 3 overshadows due to all its hype.

Hey everybody pray that I find my Bioshock. I can't find it.

It will be easier to say what is GOTY once the last of the big boys ships. Mario Galaxy seems to be getting rave responses but sheep are kind of desperate at this point. Quite honestly there is no experience that comes close to HALO3 so far. When you add the whole game package up it just stomps.

I just think the Haloness of Halo 3 holds it back.As for SMG's "rave" reviews, most gaming websites give anything with words "Mario" "Zelda" and "Metroid" a 10 before they even play the game.If Gamespot gives it a 9, then it has a shot.If it gets a 9.5 then it really has a shot, if not it would be the front runner.
