I was able to dig up definite dates on 3D World and SMG2, though I could be wrong about SMG1. Couldn't find anything clear and concise, best info I could find was a GDC reveal.

And cool beans on the city level, I'm not sweating it. I wonder if Nintendo knew that the city would be such a point of discussion lol.

I think they may have expected it to generate excitement. It largely did, of course, but there've also been some doubts about how it will go down in the final game.

Also, yup: E3 2006 for Mario Galaxy. Man, what a low profile way of announcing such a legendary game, lol.

Ohhh yeah, I remember that now. Man, in hindsight that was kinda lame lol.

And now I want to replay the Galaxy games, damn it.

Yeah. They just threw it in the sizzle reel, without even any name for it. What a weird way to announce such a legendary game. Nintendo are so weird.

I've been having that itch since Thursday too haha. I've been making do with playing 3D World, and weirdly, Splatoon, which is an excellent 3D platformer in the single player mode.

I will have to disagree with your prediction, and will take ownage if wrong.

While I am sure that Mario will score high like it usually does, there is just something about this new Zelda. I do not know what it is, but I think people are in for a treat.

Zelda is my prediction for game of the year.

Same. While Odyssey seems cool it lacks the emotion and epicness of Breath of the Wild. The new trailer gave me a new perspective on the Zelda series. Didn't know Zelda was so emotionally invested story.

I don't see how. Mario is great and all but there is a lot of stiff competition this year. Maybe it's merely an opinion, but no Mario game was ever as good as Mass Effect, Red Dead, or even one of Nintendo's own, Zelda.

It looked impressive but the gameplay they showed didn't look all that great. I need to see more of it

@Telekill: Super Mario 3, Super Mario World, Galaxy 1 and 2 are ALL better than any Mass Effect game and Red Dead.

IMO of course.

Mass Effect and Red Dead are far more sophisticated games.

Mario needs to do less, it's easier.

Its more about the universal appeal of the series and that it isnt a multiplat, so you get more pro-Nintendo publications

Not even saying its bad, but it has an edge

Yeah, that's real swell and all but these new iterations are different games.

People are starved for anything singleplayer from R* right now and the hype gets to critic's heads (and damn near everyone else's).

Does a new Mario create such anticipation?

A true successor to Mario 64? Yes, it will.

For context, Super Mario Odyssey's video has almost 2 million more views than Breath of the Wild's, and at its current pace will have overtaken the total views Red Dead Redemption 2's trailer has had since it went live in October. The trailer is currently trending across all categories on YouTube, the last time I remember that happening for a video game trailer was with Pokemon Go.

I think sometimes people tend to forget how huge Mario was- and if a true successor to Mario 64 were to come along, which Odyssey seems like it is, how much people would sit up and take notice.

Yup even none harcore Nintendo fans would breakdown and buy a Switch for a proper Mario 64 sequel.

Was really not what fans had wanted lol. It was literally an expanded 64, rather than being a next gen evolution of the 64 concept.

If it is anything like Super Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, it will probably be so.

I also think that Nioh is going to be a huge sleeper on the magnitude of Demon's Souls.

I actually have no love for the 64/Sunshine style as it was back in the N64/GCN days, and Galaxy was the first time I actually cared for 3D Mario. That said, they have refined Galaxy and Mario 3D to the fullest, so I want to see them try something different. Attempting a sandbox platformer with the finesse and nuance of Galaxy and 3D World would be great- let's see them do that, and that's what Odyssey seems to be to me.

really? 64 is a classic, way better than Galaxy or 3D world imo. Just having the world with different paths to find made it much more interesting and rewarding, Galaxy is overhyped to me

I used to love Mario 3 and Mario World. Mario 64 diluted the laser sharp focus on mechanics and level design of those games for openness, and I never got over that much. Then Sunshine was Mario 64, but worse in every way, so I was pretty much done with 3D Mario, until Galaxy came about. The first Galaxy I actually liked mostly because of the gimmick, the second Galaxy was when I felt for the first time that they had the same kind of mastery over control and level design that they used to in 2D Mario. And with 3D World, I felt that they had finally achieved the perfect 3D translation of what 2D Mario used to be.

But that said, that's exactly it- they mastered it. They perfected it. There's nowhere else left to go with that style of game. 64/Sunshine, that template demands polish and further iteration. Odyssey does just that, and I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Maybe its because I didnt enjoy the world gimmicks in Galaxy that much. Its not a bad game, but its not a 10/10 for me, I still prefer 64. I just found the linear style to be less unique for 3D mario because 2D mario is so good already that I could just play that instead. 3D world was just straight up boring to me

The 64 Style mario is great when the game has enough "depth" in Mario's moveset to allow multiple ways for a skilled player to traverse through the map. That is what I liked about 64 but didnt like so much with Sunshine.

@uninspiredcup: sophisticated =\= better.

Nintendo perfected 2D and 3D platforming with those games, so if it's so easy, why hasn't anyone made better platformers?

Those games are great, but your response is clearly one of a gamer who is caught up with presentation and spectacle.

Don't get me wrong, those games are awesome, but when it comes to what matters most in a game, gameplay, the four games I listed are better than either Mass Effect or Red Dead.

I believe deep down inside people are uncertain with the new Mario. We can pretend that its going to be great but we all know when we saw that trailer we had strong moments of despair and a strong flashback of Sonic. The ONLY thing that is helping with this concern is that Mario games are typical great.

@Pedro: The problems with Sonic '06 weren't with the setting though, but you are correct in saying the only thing going for it right now is that its a Mario game

I personally feel that Odyssey has the highest chance at the biggest score this year. Breath of the Wild will probably be exceptional, but I can see it being less polished than Odyssey. I think BOTW could have issues some reviewers could latch to.

Never bothered with sunshine, galaxy or 3d mario's. they are all terrible in my vision. Sunshine because who the hell wants to play with a water blower on there back. Terrible concept. 3d world mario's are so limited in scope, not even remotely interesting, and galaxy felt to lineaire to me.

Odyssey is the first mario that feels like a propper mario again. It will score high with outlets but most likely not sell well. Because i think most nintendo fans are used towards the brain dead mario games they pushed out these days and will find this a bit to much challening as not all the information is fed instantly towards you.

The game also seem to be well in development and almost done from what i read.

I can't wait. After the n64 this is the first mario game i feel hyped about again. The only other mario i was hyped about was mario 64 on the DS lol, only becuase portable was interesting back in the day.

I got the feeling of exploration again, something i missed in mario's big time after the 64.

Can't wait.

They should have launched with mario tho, in my opinion.

ps.

I also talked about it with some friends yesterday that are not even remotely into console gaming they all left after the n64 and moved towards the ps1 > to ps2, then bailed to PC.

Every single one of them is interested in the new mario, but nobody finds the price even remotely acceptable. Also nobody understands why it's not launching with mario.

I think that game can bring a lot of new people in, if they would price it anywhere near decent this fall.

Real world Mario is gross. Hello, Sonic 06. Will cartoon Mario have a realistic designed human gf? Lol
