This may be Sony's biggest blunder since the PS3 announcement? Of course on a much smaller scale. Price has been cut by 40% only 23 days after launch.

Price still too high though right :P I'll get it if it's $40.

Probably worth it for the hacks, otherwise a dumpster fire.

Not surprised... a disaster of a product. Just a blatant cash grab.

That's pretty LOL. It must not be selling at all, but honestly they deserve it.

I wasn't one who complained about games selection (though ALL of these retro consoles should really be far more complete). But really, to not have dualshock controller AND using PAL versions in NTSC region is unforgivable. Especially that latter issue which is just straight up stupidity.

Nah, its in the PSP GO area of blunders. I doubt Sony is going to lose much capital on this mini as they did initially on the PS3. Its not the same thing.

Not saying that failing is a good thing but this is what you get for trying to charge for backwards compatibility. Same goes for nintendos retro console and any others that come out.

A trash fire. Now they gotta bury these things in a landfill because nothing about this went right. PAL games, shit emulator settings, bad UI. Fucking up on multiple levels toward something so simple. A no-effort cash grab by Sony that deserved nothing but failure.

I’m still gonna wait. $39.99 is my jump in point. I won’t actually play it since I own a PS1 and all the games I would want to play. $40 bucks for a decoration seems reasonable

I'd rather purchase a PS3 and buy from their extensive selection of cheap PS1/PS2 classics.

60 bucks for crap? Still very expensive.

I bet Sony's explanation is "nobody wants to play old games" or something else equally dumb.

Remaster versions of old games?

I get why those cost. At least both Uncharted collection and The Last of Us are improved from their original PS3 versions.

PS now.. That's a service, so you pay to rent the games more or less, isn't it?

Ahh, well maybe I was incorrect in saying remasters. Like you pointed out, Uncharted collection, TLoU as well as stuff like Burnout Paradise, Resident Evil, Shadow of the Colossus etc are all improved versions, so charging for them makes sense. I guess I meant more like the PS1/PS2 games you have to pay for on PSN despite maybe already owning physically, or with Nintendo charging for games on Virtual Console and then discontinuing it on the Switch.

Don't think it would be as big a deal if Sony and Nintendo's previous consoles hadn't mostly been backwards compatible, or Microsoft's BC program making them look bad in comparison.

Yeah pretty much, you can download the games now too I think. Only the PS4 ones though, something to do with PS3 emulation not being possible. Kinda pricey too imo.

Not because Nintendo did and succeed (mainly due to so many nostalgia suckers who like to buy useless hardware) means that you should do it Sony. This piece of garbage deserved to fail. Instead of enabling gamers to just purchase and play on the PS4 you opted to this nonsense. I am glad the POS failed and failed hard.

I'm guessing since Sony puts in some work to get it to work (those PS1/PS2) games through emulation that they want some payment for them. I hope those prices are low, as I see no reason for them to be above 5$. And honestly I expect them to follow your account as well so it will work on PS5 as well. But that is probably asking to much.

PS3 emulation might come with PS5.

That's an odd way of looking at it.

Retro consoles have been around for awhile, sega and atari ones were always around. Nintendo was the first time an actual company stepped in and did it officially and correctly.

I still can't wrap my mind around how they managed to screw this up so badly on pretty much every level. This goes beyond just laziness, it almost seems like they were intentionally trying to make a bad product.

At least the hacking community is quickly fixing most of it's problems and turning it into what Sony should have released in the first place.

I'm not saying that Sony shouldn't enable gamers to purchase PS1 games on the PS4 because they definitely should, but this cheap product that appeals to a different type of gamer than the ones that just want to play the games on PS4 is not the reason that Sony isn't putting PS1 games on the PS4. That has much more to do with them wanting you to rent the games on their Playstation Now service.

I get that this type of product doesn't personally appeal to you, but not every product is made for you and the concept of this type of product does appeal to many other people. There are many people that find this type of product (when done well) more appealing than just playing the games on a PS4 and this product could have made all of those people very happy if Sony didn't screw it up.

This product deserves to fail, but not because of the concept; it deserves to fail because Sony badly screwed up the execution whereas Nintendo's mini consoles rightfully deserve their success since Nintendo executed the concept well and delivered a quality product that made millions of people happy.

I never understood this, every product released in the history of ever is meant to grab cash from the consumer.

cash grab (plural cash grabs) (derogatory) A product designed primarily or solely with the intent of generating profits.

So...every product ever made, ever?

I think a cash grab has to refer to an unusually low quality product, cynically marketed to customers with little understanding of what they're buying. FWIW, I don't think this was exactly a cash grab, but more of an overly optimistic price point.

It means a product made with little effort or quality control that doesn't do much for the consumer in return, while the creator expects maximum returns anyway. The only thing Sony wanted to exploit was nostalgia, which they thought this product would coast on alone. They were wrong.

Not wanting to put the effort into making this a worthwhile collectors item, it blew up in their face. Nostalgia is useless if the final product comes out worse than people remembered.

@drummerdave9099: The problem with the PS Classic is that Sony didn't already own most of the games in the PSX library, so unlike Nintendo, they had to pay licensing fees for just about everything; which is why there's so many high profile games missing.

Also, not including a power cord? They cost 23 cents to manufacture. What was the goal of that?

Already owned some of these games on PSN/steam (or played them originally) and have no reason to get this. It was a recipe for disaster. Who wanted or asked for it?

Plenty of people asked for it and wanted it just like plenty of people wanted the NES Classic and SNES Classic. It was not a recipe for disaster, it was a recipe for a win/win situation where Sony makes easy money while also delivering a nostalgic collectible that would make many customers very happy just like Nintendo did previously.

It only ended up being a disaster because Sony put absolutely no thought or effort into their product. They thought that they could just wrap a turd in nostalgia and it would still sell as well as Nintendo's products did, but they were wrong. 90s nostalgia is very big right now and can be an easy win for those that tap into it the right way, but that nostalgia will only sell when it's a quality nostalgia product like Nintendo created with their NES Classic and SNES Classic. Sony could have done the same and had the same success, but they screwed it up.

People aren't buying it because the games don't represent the best of the original PlayStation.

Too many classic games missing. No Tomb Raider, No Gran Turismo, no Silent Hill, etc.

I am still surprised to see Rainbow Six there. How you can play that game with that controller is beyond me. You wouldn't be able to aim with it.

The PS Classic just has good looks. In reality, the game selection is too limited.

There's little doubt they rushed this out the door for Christmas.

Again, the most interesting thing will be hacks and seeing how far they can take this piece of shit.

If it had crash, spyro, tomb raider 2 I might have picked it up the game selection just wasn't up to par. The emulation wasn't great either according to various sources.

@storm_of_swords: It's a recipe for a win win? Did you miss the part where it lost lost? You sound like a commercial.

People poured absolute scorn on this from the announcement onwards, as a cheap copy of Nintendo's idea.
