Gawd.. I so regret buying this thing. Still don't regret it as much as the Xbox One, though.
Hilarious!!
@storm_of_swords: It's a recipe for a win win? Did you miss the part where it lost lost? You sound like a commercial.
People poured absolute scorn on this from the announcement onwards, as a cheap copy of Nintendo's idea.
Did you not read anything past my first two sentences? I said that the concept was a recipe for a win/win situation, but the actual product that Sony delivered was a piece of shit and that is why it lost/lost. I'm not defending this garbage product that Sony delivered and I don't see how anybody that fully read my post could interpret it like that as I clearly called it a turd. I'm defending what it could have potentially been if Sony would have put a little thought and effort into it like Nintendo did with their products, but Sony screwed it up.
Sony messing this one up is probably the most improbable flop ever. Hope nothing transpires to the PS5, some extremely weird corporate decisions.
I mean, so many great games to chose from and they put outdated games no one cares about. Silent Hill, Crash, Spyro, Castlevania, Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, Soul Reaver... so many games I'm baffled they didnt include instead of the likes of Battle Arena Toshiden, Cool Boarders, Jumping flash, Rainbow Six, Mr Driller... wtf is this cr4p?
Sometimes just trying to copy Nintendo is not enough. RIP«
Ya realize Nintendo didnt come up with the idea of retro consoles, right?
Sega had done them way before Nintendo. I swear people still give waaaay too much credit to Nintendo's "originality"... Everything Nintendo does successfully, ignorants keep claiming "Nintendo came up with the idea". No they didnt, they just popularized it, same with motion controls and touch screens

Do you guys think we'll still see a PS2 classic in the future, or has this debacle made it more unlikely? Would be gutted if they backed off from the idea now due to the way this one turned out.
Not for a while. I saw PS2 consoles for sale at Wal-Mart as late as 2013.

Nintendo did not come up with the idea, but they were the first ones to execute the idea well and that's what matters.
Sega had AtGames make their retro consoles for them and they were terrible products with terrible emulation and not much nostalgic appeal outside of just having these poorly emulated games on an ugly black box that looked nothing like the Sega Genesis. Nintendo showed the world how to do it correctly and that's why they were more successful than the others.
Sony obviously wanted to replicate Nintendo's success, but they were not willing to put in the thought and effort that Nintendo did with their retro mini consoles.

Because of the SNES success? Maybe. But thats not exactly "copying". Nintendo copied from SEGA first and sony was just following the trend, nothing else

Define "the idea well". No, they werent. Sega retro consoles were of quality. The only thing Nintendo did was cashing in on people's nostalgia wich is bigger on the Nintendo's side than on Sega's, nothing else. So STOP giving credit to Nintendo for everything, especially when they dont deserve it

Nintendo's classic consoles got a ton of hype and sold very very well. The games lists weren't perfect, but they were mostly fair (lack of DKC2 and Chrono Trigger still hurts). I think the point is Sony did it thinking they'd see a similar success to Nintendo.
@Vatusus:
1) Sega's retro consoles weren't of the same quality is the NES and SNES classic. UI and controllers were better on the latter systems. They also had more popular games and better rated games on them.
2) You say that Nintendo were able to cash in on people's nostalgia better than Sega was even though Sega did it first. That's true. But you ignore the fact that Nintendo has put a ton of work in to cultivate that nostalgia. Nintendo Stores, Club Nintendo merchandise, games like Smash which keep old characters in the collective consciousness of gamers. None of that is easy. The only company who arguably does this sort of thing better than Nintendo is Disney.

Yes, they wanted the same success as Nintendo. They still didnt copy them more than Nintendo copied Sega and other retro console manufacturers. Nintendo gathered more hype because its a brand that highly revolves around nostalgia. FACT
@mandzilla: Knowing how Sony works, they will never admit they screwed up with the Playstation Classic. They will just come up with some excuse like "The Market for retro consoles was no longer viable or some bs like that."
Look at the Vita. Not once did they admit that they put out an overpriced handheld that they barely supported that required expensive memory cards that drove the price up further.
No, they blamed mobile phones and acted like the handheld market was no longer viable.
Despite the 3DS posting great sales in the face of mobile gaming.
Watch Sony spin this with some BS excuse while acting like the market for retro consoles suddenly dried up(Despite both the NES and SNES Classics both leading NPD sales at the end of several months this year) and the market for retro consoles and Games getting larger.

You calling those AtGames Sega mini consoles "quality" makes me question if you even know anything about them other than that they existed before the NES Classic and therefore for some reason you want to use their existence to try to take credit away from Nintendo for the great job that they did with their retro mini consoles.
My nostalgia for Sega is just as strong as my nostalgia for Nintendo and I've been following those AtGames Sega mini consoles for many years, hoping that someday they would release a quality one, but it never happened. And then Nintendo comes along and releases a quality one on their first try. You want me to define what I mean by "the idea well", for starters, this is what those AtGames Sega mini consoles looked like for many years prior to the release of the NES Classic:
An ugly black box with no personality which looks nothing like the beautiful original Sega Genesis. Last year, they finally redesigned this crap to look more look an actual mini Sega Genesis. It's funny how for so many years prior to the NES Classic, they just released this ugly black box year after year, but then once Nintendo had success with a mini console that actually looked like a miniature version of the original console, they finally started putting some effort into the design. It's almost as if Nintendo did something better and they were reacting to it. Hmm...
But that's sadly only the beginning, it's also important that these retro mini consoles have good emulation, good sound quality, quality controllers, a well-polished UI, and a selection of games that does a good job of representing the original console. Nintendo did a pretty good job with all of those things. The AtGames Sega mini consoles, on the other hand, are known for having glitchy emulation, terrible sound quality, poorly designed controllers, an unpolished UI, and a game selection that doesn't do justice to representing the greatness of the original Sega Genesis while getting padded out with a bunch of crappy shovelware games that were never even real Genesis games.
Depressing, isn't it? Well, here is some good news, the rumor is that Sega has finally kicked AtGames to the curb and may be developing the next Sega Genesis mini console in-house. I wonder what made them finally decide to do that after all these years? It certainly couldn't be a case of them realizing that they now need to step it up and match the quality of Nintendo's mini consoles because Vatusus said that the Sega mini consoles were already "of quality". LOL. At any rate, I hope that Sega is finally developing these things internally and will release a quality product next year. I love the concept of these mini consoles and I would love to see all of the past retro console makers release some as long as they are quality products. Thus far, Nintendo has set the bar for them and they do deserve credit for that especially given that Sony and Sega have thus far failed to even come close to that bar.

Sorry, I refuse to read wall of texts of nothing. Sony didnt copy Nintendo as much as Nintendo didnt copy Sega and other retro consoles manufacturers and thats a FACT. Your Nintendo isnt as original as you think it is. Now deal with it
@Vatusus: I figured that you would use the old "I'm not going to read that" BS excuse because you can see that it's a well-informed post from somebody that knows a lot about these mini consoles and you can't possibly argue against the multiple facts that I presented since you obviously don't really know anything about these mini consoles yourself and you really just want to push an anti-Nintendo agenda. Perhaps you should have chosen a topic that you were more informed about before embarrassing yourself. There are other legitimate things that you can criticize Nintendo for, you know.
Well, if you are going to pretend that you haven't read my post then I guess there is no point in me continuing to waste my time with you. Continue on with your Nintendo hatred, I guess.

So Nintendo did a good job on a Nintendo retro console and cashed in on People's Nostalgia. Big fvckin whoop! They were not the first who came up with the idea and thats a FACT. Sega's retro consoles have indeed sadly sucked, the balls.
And thus far they don't give a shit about MS/GG/Saturn.
We sit quietly and pray for them to wake up.
@Vatusus: I find it humorous that a Sony fanboy is in this thread calling Nintendo unoriginal. Sony hasn’t had an original thought the entire time they’ve been in the game.
- Release a controller with no analog stick
- shoehorn analog support and rumble after the competition
- the last to go wireless
- took rumble out and called it last gen and shoehorned motion controls
- put rumble back in
- made their first “original” controller that looked like a boomerang
- copied trophies, premium service, “free games”
- PS Move and camera were a reaction to the competition
Sony is a fucking mess

They also chose great games and didn't leave out 10 must haves. 5 of those games on the PS Classic were awful choices.
@caryslan2: Yeah spot on with that post dude. Sony did try to explain away the lack of Vita success with a pretty suspect claim about the handheld market being taken over by mobile gaming.
In fact they could have been rivalling the 3DS' success were it not for the numerous Vita design missteps, overpriced memory cards and complete lack of first-party support after the honeymoon period was over.
No way can they hide the lazy approach they took with the PS Classic this time though. Like you said, retro consoles are pretty hot right now, and this was a total missed opportunity for an easy buck by Sony.
My nephew still has his working PS One plus my original PSX. He also has all the combined PSX games we ever owned in a big packing box. No need for Classic.
I also gave them my N64 back then as a new hand-me-down. But, it got handed down further and now, no one can account for where it went.

Hum, way to go overboard. Never once did I said Sony was "original" (w/e that means at this day and age). I prefer companies to be good at what they do, rather then original. I only claimed that Nintendo isnt as original as many of you seem to think it is and imediately sheep became butthurt for stating the truth. Giving "originality" credit to Nintendo for releasing a retro console... now thats precious

Sony is such a mess that they've dominated current gen.

It's a bit of an apples/oranges thing. The PS Classic clearly seems like it was half-assed. They put so little thought into it they may as well have had someone like ATGames do it.
The Vita was actually an awesome piece of hardware and software though. Why it didn't sell initially was a bit of a mystery. I guess you could say the memory cards... but that's pretty funny coming from any Nintendo fans considering how cheap Nintendo usually is about things such as memory, screen quality, weak hardware, etc. It's a shame Sony didn't even try to save Vita, that's on them, but the initial design was great and it even had a nice games lineup for a couple years before they abandoned it. I'm not even much of a handheld gamer, so I dont' have much skin in the game in the whole 3DS vs. Vita thing. I had both of them, and played both only sparingly.
@2Chalupas: Good points, and for sure it was a cutting edge piece of tech at the time.
I'd say one of the biggest reasons the Vita flopped was that they didn't take away any lessons from the PSP. Rather than developing and encouraging games which would have been a better fit for a portable, they continued to push out console-lite games with a bunch of compromises. A lot of the stuff on the Vita runs poorly. They needed more titles like Tearaway and less Black Ops Declassified/Resistance Burning Skies/Assassin's Creed.
Library diversification is another big drawback, unless you're a huge JRPG/visual novel fan there's not much else on offer in any great amounts.
My nephew still has his working PS One plus my original PSX. He also has all the combined PSX games we ever owned in a big packing box. No need for Classic.
You can put all the games into a pluggable USB, or better yet, had they bothered,, built inside the console itself with the Classic. It's also significantly smaller taking up less space, alongside the lack of disks.
In short it should have been an easy win, a novelty nostalgia item. They failed. Even the cable length is cheap.
Ironic that a product called "Bleem", should save it, and probably help it with sales counter-acting negative media.

Bleem had a demo before Sony slammed down on its creators. We were able to test out Tekken and it looked really nice on PC compared to the original PSX version: no scan lines, high resolution as in 1024x768. The Bleem version also ran more fluid.
Well, we already have the original consoles which have no compatibility problems although the loading times are a pain and they're non-HD. I also have my original PS2 still. So, we're set.
I was going to donate my PS2 to an airport USO back in New York State. I didn't realize back then that it can play PS1 discs. Good thing I held on to it. ;)

They didn't, but they were clearly following Nintendo.
Because of the SNES success? Maybe. But thats not exactly "copying". Nintendo copied from SEGA first and sony was just following the trend, nothing else
It is copying. They are specifically mimicking Nintendo due to their success.
Sega doing it before them is irrelevant.
Sega have finally got it right after atgames debacle. Sony have failed this mini console spectacularly which should have been a very easy sell with the ps1 library.

lol, learn what copying means before coming out as ignorant. They tried to mimic retro consoles success, not directly Nintendo's console wich is what we're debating here. If Sony copied Nintendo so Nintendo copied Sega and other retro console manufacturers before it. FACT

False. They are mimicking Nintendo.
Sega are irrelevant in this matter.
