PS1 was the first system to go overboard with meh rehashes. How many Twisted Metals? How many Tomb Raiders? How many Maddens? How many Resident Evils?

THAT's what ruined gaming. If casuals enjoy innovative controllers like the Wii-Mote then by all means, bring more of these types of casuals into gaming.

But cows, you can tell your casual fans to leave gaming and never come back. They are the reason why 50% of the games released every week are meh racing games, Grand Theft Auto wanna-bes, annual rehashes of sports games with slightly different game features but new rosters, and so on....

Wii is not ruining gaming. It's bringing it back. Gaming was ruined by PS1, and utterly destroyed by PS2. It was getting lame. Wii is bringing new life back to video games.

The truth will set you free. :)

Nothing 'ruined' gaming, but I get where you are coming from. Its a change in demographics amongst gamers that now includes the casuals. The casuals were created by the PS2.

The PS2 was the casual system last gen and in its life got a lot of shovelware. The Wii is selling like hotcakes now so those development houses that cashed in with shovelware on the PS2 are now doing the same with the Wii. It sucks, but you dont have to buy them.

I can't comment on the PS1 ruining gaming part because I wasn't "hardcore" with PS1 back then.

But for the Wii part, it's very true. If Wii was a console that did the same as 360/PS3/PC, the gaming industry would continue to be boring with no variety.

Nobody "ruined" gaming. Developers choose to rehash games, and it's inevitable. Once you've developed a cash cow, you'd be inclined to stick with it, milk that sucker for all it's got. All those series you mentioned, brought in a serious amount of money for both their developers and... well... Sony. But you can't blame them, it's becoming increasingly difficult to come up with new, and fresh ideas. So much has already been done in gaming.

I'm a Nintendo fan and all, but i'm gonna defend the PS1 here, why? well...recently got FF8, totally love it. And i'm not even mention the other great titles for this console (MGS, RE2, FF7, etc) there is always gonna be casuals, not matter what console, is just the way it is.

I remember playing a ****ty comic-strip tied-in, buggy. glitch, sequel, port on my Gameboy. It was a Garfield game. Gaming has improved greatly in terms of quality of the average game in recent years - it was quite possible in the pre-PS1 days to get a real POS simply due to lack of information sources. The internet has been an absolute blessing for gamers.

No, I disagree completely. PS1 made gaming huge, PS2 pushed it even further and both consoles have a massive selection of absolutely superb titles available.

I don't see how good games ruin gaming.

Resident Evil, rehash? I know that it had a director's cut for the first game and something else but that's basically it and PS1 doesn't make rehashes, developers do them and since consumers like them, they make more.

You are rightthePS1 did ruin gaming in a way but it's not it's fault. It's all the company's fault not the console as the console was selling like hotcakes and in total sold like 100 million units meant that company's saw money so they released countless sequels and wanna be hit games on it. So you could say the PS1 ruined gaming but it was the company's who really did and they just used the PS1 to do it. Like you also the PS2 selling so well as well also made this rehashing worse but you cant blame the console only the company's who do these rehash. Also with the Wii it isn't ruining hardcore gaming causal people are and even they ain't because I dont the wii is ruining gaming, but making it more interesting.

I'll have to completely disagree with you, the ps1 didn't ruin gaming, in fact, no system has done that yet. The gaming industry has expanded a million fold from the time of the first game consoles of the 1970's up until the hay-day of the ps1, and even beyond that. Because of that you have a lot of companies trying to out do their competition by releasing similar games. And when a title has many sequels, it only means that enough people liked the game that a sequel can be made, games that no one buys or that are complete crap often don't have sequels or games that are like them.

If you think the industry is in such ruin why don't you get a new hobby buddy, because 99% of all GS members will disagree that the gaming industry is far from ruined, especially because of the ps1.

It's also called wrong. What a putzy thing to say. PS3 isn't even selling good at all, neither is it's software. Wii isn't bringing gaming "back", because it's never gone anywhere. And you dare to talk about re-hashes when the only hyped Wii games are first party sequels or prequels or stupid sports games?

What a complete joke.

Just to make sure you realise rehashing didn't begin with the PS1 nor were they the first to go "overboard".

The madden franchise started on the Apple II and commodore 64 then ported to SNES where it released 7 madden games in the SNES life span, plus you got your NHL(5) and NBA(4) games, kirby games, mario (of course), and Bomberman.

Lets look at the sega now, 4 double dragon games (I remember really liking these games), NBA live games started here (plus you got your maddens and fifas and what not), then you got your sonic games and all the spin-offs, golden axe was another game with many "Rehashes".

How about the 6 mega man games the preceded that on the NES plus the plethora of Donkey Kong games, lets throw in castlevania while were at it.

Let's go even further aback to the Atari 2600 frogger ring a bell, 4 Q bert games (same amount of Twisted metal games on ps1). If you want to go further back you got arcades with god only knows how many "rehashes" and ripoffs/spinoffs.

"Rehashes" are part of gaming along with a lot ofother differnt forms of media(Movies, T.V, Books, etc.).I left a lot of games out that had multiple releases on a system (sorry PC). If you believe one console is destroying gaming then you are ignorant to what gaming is. Gaming is ever changing with each new generation there is some change (talking mostly console gaming because PC changes fast...). First you had arcades to home consoles (skipping generations because of lack of knowledge of the subject), with the fifth generation of gaming (PS1, N64, Saturn etc.) you had the full 3D games, sixth generation (Dreamcast, Gamecube, PS2, XBOX) you had the start of online in consoles, this generation you have the integration of motion sensing and downloadable content plus all consoles are heading more of the way of multi-media devices such as the internet browser, music/video storage, etc..

If anything is going to destroy gaming its the close minded gamers not the systems or there games.

So I'm sure you're thrilled that The Wii has so many top notch mini games for you to play, because those are so innovative and that is exactly what gaming needs right? Its also so awesome that many other developers are following suit making these spectacular mini games because people are buying them right?

Wii is doing NOTHING for gaming. Wii is proving that a company can release the same gaming system two times and get away with it. If you look at it, the Wii is a step back for gaming with all the shovel ware being released on it with its outdated hardware. Wiifit???!!! Are you friggin serious?? How is that a game? If you want to excersize, go out and play some real sports.

The Wii wishes it was a great as the PS1 and PS2 were. Those systems had truly great games. I can count on one hand how many good games the Wii has that are not rehashes and shovelware. Hell, the Wii isn't even as innovative ar the original Xbox. at least it introduced using hard drives in a console, and Xbox Live.

you fanboys need to think before you write crap like this.

Madzero, and Shinobi7777, ownage confirmed. Mazal tov.

PS1 was an amazing console, and this is coming from someone who considers N64 to be the best console ever. Wii will never touch PS1 or PS2 in terms of quality software, and possibly even sales. In fact, I might just plug in my 360 USB controller, start up emu, and play some Die Hard Trilogy and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Terrible.

Blame the developers for the shovelware, if you can't appreciate what the PS1/2 did for the gaming community [ brought in more gamers] then I guess the Wii is ruining gaming too.

Agreed.

Funny howAnti-Wii fanboys (particularly Cows)conveniently ignore this. But IMHO, the silly numbers of FPS games we get on other consolesare just as bad as the shovelware. They too exist due to the casual market.

What ruined gamming? That would belong to such things as the dreadful Atari 5200 the controller alone is bigger than a ps1 and not only that, it doesn't work. It's one of the reasons why the videogame crash of 83' occured. Though it wasn't the biggest reason, it was a factor.

But if you want things that ruin the experience of gaming. It would have to be such thingsas the Virtual Boy, the Power Glove, the N-Gage, the Gizmondo. Hell, even the PS3 didn't cost as much as the ****ing Panasonic 3D0, which started at $700, and if injusted for inflation would probably cost close to $1,000 now.

People are just mad Wii is selling well, that does not mean you have to falsely accuse PS1.

Neither ruined gaming. If anything Wii is improving gaming because unlike pS3 and 360, Nintendo did not rehash the Wii. It has anew controller that will go very far in 2008 and 2009. When third party devs start properly utilizing the Wiimote we will see big changes.

Publishers like milking a cash cow when they've got one.

I don't know how you can blame the PS1 for ruining gaming, if people didn't buy the games that are supposedly destroying gaming then there wouldn't supposedly be a problem right?

You mean the PS...the console that saved us from cartridges? The console that made games cheaper to develop? The console that saved us from Nintendo's arrogant tyranny? The console that gave us Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy VII, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and countless other new age classics?

Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the crib this morning.

Neither ruins gaming..

Well seriously, you are right saying that the Wii is just following the path of crap game that the PS started or rather re-invented... But diversity is always good on a market, and the invicible hand will work through the consumers.. Well that is i the consumers is enlightend which isnt the case..

Well capitalism ftw.

ps1 was brilliant.

dont take your anger out on the ps1 because of fanboys. i grew up the ps, it always delivered. a brilliant sequel isn't a "rehash"

hip-hop-cola2

It deliverd but it does have the biggest ratio of crap game of all consoles in history.. Wel closely followed by Wii and PS I guess..

I dont say its a bad thing, but it didnt always deliver. It rarely ever deliverd considering how many games that was avalible, but it deliverd more in terms of quantity thenother systems..

PS1 ruined gaming? How? How many survival horror games were there before the PS1 came out? How many vehicular combat games? How many exploration adventure games? How many free-roaming skateboard games? Etc, etc, etc.

The PS1 did more to rejuvenate gaming than any console ever. It weas also the first gaming machine to bring true 3d graphics to gamers (the Saturn was made to be a 2D machine and they slapped 3D on at the last minute to counter the PS1 which is why the Saturn hardware sucked and was so problematic for devs).

I tought that was the Saturn, you know since it was released earlier and all. Seriously the PSX gave us nothing except a lot of awesome games.

Edit: Even the controller was a blatant rip-off.
