Capcom Exec and co-producer of Streetfighter 2 in interview with Sega Saturn Magazine, 1998:

"The Days when people really loved playing computers games has ended. This is mainly because of Sony. Sony has created a new era of light users who consider games to be just an everyday form of general entertainment- nothing special. The kind of games we used to see from Nintendo have gone. These are the games that children used to play, but now they don't."

How many times has gaming been "doomed"? I wish it would die so that we can stop saying its going to die.

[QUOTE="Bread_or_Decide"]

You mean the PS...the console that saved us from cartridges? The console that made games cheaper to develop? The console that saved us from Nintendo's arrogant tyranny? The console that gave us Metal Gear Solid, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy VII, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and countless other new age classics?

Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the crib this morning.

Oscar-Wilde

I tought that was the Saturn, you know since it was released earlier and all. Seriously the PSX gave us nothing except a lot of awesome games.

Edit: Even the controller was a blatant rip-off.

It gave us nothing.

But it gave us awesome games?

You are contradicting yourself. The games is where the innovation occured. Not the console. It just gave the devs a bigger playground towork in. Thats where the innovation SHOULD be, not in wacky controllers or additional peripherals.

So it either gave something or nothing. You can't have it both ways.

Game developers have been milking their franchises for years. What I really don't get is these "classic" remakes like "frogger", "pac-man" and coming soon, "bionic commando". Unfortunately, developers are more likely to make money in rehashing an old franchise (via sequel or "remake")than creating a new one. This reminds me of athread that I posted earlier:

How many Twisted Metals? How many Tomb Raiders? How many Maddens? How many Resident Evils?

The__MCP

I think the TC needs to answer his own questions. He makes it to be far worse than it actually was.

Madden? New teams every year, so, of course there's a new on every year. Its the same on every console.

Tomb Raider? I think there was ony like three versions on the PS1. One of which, I'm sure, was after PS2 launched. Same with Resident Evil.

Again, I think TC is blowing this waaaaaaay out of proportion.

TC - I agree. Cows, of all people, should realize that the PS1 was the first HEAVILY casual system. Now they bash the Wii for catering to casuals as well as hardcores. It's truly pathetic.

[QUOTE="JayPee89"]It's called a blog.The__MCP

It's called I'm sick of all the true casuals trashing Wii for ruining gaming by catering to casuals. But if you want the same type of controller, same type of game, rinse and repeat, then by all means, carry on...

With how many Mario trying to save Peach rehashes. Link saving Hryule and Zelda. Starfox, Donkey Kong, Mario racing games from Super Nintendo. Do not confuse myth with the facts that Nintendo only can add a gimmick and no new franchise. Also, how many times have we seen Samus. That is what I thought.

I don't have a problem with Sony. I have a problem with fanboys trying to suggest that the Wii is somehow the first console to appeal to casuals. "teh wii is teh end of teh gaming!1" - that kind of garbage.

Agreed. The SNES was pouring with insta-classics from the very beginning. Still my all-time favorite console.

Fanboys ruined gaming.

THe problem is that fanboys never think THEY are being fanboys. It's always everyone else that is the fanboy.

Just like the saying, 'Thieves think everyone steals", "fanboys think everyone is stupid".

Fanboys are like abusive husbands. Aside from being ignorant and irrational...they feel the need to beat someone down and then to rationalize their irrational behaviour, they all eventually blame the victimfor "making them do it." If only they didn't do this or that, I wouldn't have to beat them...except that is BS and just an excuse to avoid the irrational anger of the abuser who is looking for any excuse at all to justify their already existing hatred.

There were fanboys goin back as long as there has been strong competition between consoles. I would say fanboyism began when Sega became popular with the Genesis. At that point, fans of the Master System and SEGA arcade titles lashed out against Nintendo. Meanwhile the NIntendo fans riding on the popularity of the NES lashed out against the SEGA fans.

This has always been a problem. The difference is we now have the internet where anyone at all, from any place on earth, can speak there opinion. And as we all know, the internet by its very nature tends to bring out the worst in people.

Fanboyism was born during the 16-bit era, actually. The Sega/Nintendo fanboy battle was arguably much more fierce than it is today.

I apologize for not being clear. I didn't mean to imply that you were a fanboy. As a PS1, PS2 fan who now owns a Wii I totally agree with what you were saying. My comment was meant to be general in regards to all fanboys and the people who seem to hate Sony no matter what they do. You just got swept up in the quoting process.

People keep saying gaming hasn't gone anywhere.
Well, look at how the PS3 and 360 are selling because of their prices.
If we had another $500 console, LOTS of people would have stopped gaming. Including me.

Original nintendo Had Mario 1,2, and 3. Nintendo is still milking this franchise.

Genesis had Madden, madden 92-like 97 or 98. Still come out every year.

Genesis had Sonic 1,2,3 spinball, and that fake 3d one. Sega still milking this franchise.

How did Playstation ruin gaming again?

Name all these GTA wannabes BTW.

Ehhh Ps1 appealed to casuals but not to everyone. The Wii according to Nintendo appeals to everyone, from a 95 years old grandma to a president of a company.

PS1 created gaming for me. Even though I owned Sega and Nintendo consoles before, none of them had the interactivity visuals, control, or sound that the PS1 had. PS1 is a legend, I think its better than PS2 was.

I don't think PS1 ruined gaming, but it popularized something that changed the way gamers look at games: full motion video. Most gamers, especially casuals and new gamers, became so desperate do "play" a game with the same graphics displayed by those videos that now developers are acclaimed not by being creative, but by making a more technically advanced product. So now we have "hardcore" gamers arguing about how many jaggies and how "epic" the game story is (or how much a game resembles a movie). Gamers wanting a game to look and feel like a movie is what is ruining gaming.

No...it didn't

And judging the plethora of good games out this year...the wii doesn't seem to be ruining gaming either.

Casuals get their games...we still get our games.

Actually, the PS1 helped mature the market. What did the N64 bring us? Pokemon?

What did the PS1 bring us? Adult titles such as the ones you mentioned.

Now... Lets get this streight. "Casuals" (I hate the term) are highly profitable for gaming and are a vastly generalised audience. For example, most people would hate to admit halo and gears are casual, crysis is casual, mario is casual, pokemon is casual, and people would probably throw GTA in there as well.

What is bad for gaming? Perhaps if developers had to pay royalty fees, or comply with zealous censor ship rules etc. Nintendo nearly killed console gaming... The Playstation 1 saved it. It actually started a lot of original games, and shooters weren't the obvious genre. It allowed developers to do what they want, It wasn't as constraining as using cartridges.

Whatever the little fanboys think, Nintendo was (WAS, not is) the only threat to ruining gaming that ever exists.

The only things that "ruined" gaming, as you put it, are people b*tching about which console can do the most calculations per second or which has the "coolest games" and the general public (so called hardcore gamers included) buying the same crap re-releases from the same companies with added shine. I've owned almost all the consoles throughout the spectrum of gaming (Xbox, Ps1 and 2, Gamecube, Dreamcast, Nes, Master System, all the way back to Atari) all of them had "hardcore" (Elite anyone?) and "casual" games (who hasn't played mario or sonic?) and i still just consider myself a gamer. To conclude, nothing has ruined gaming, just gamers attitudes have changed, if gaming was ruined then we wouldn't play, would we.

PS1 was the first system to go overboard with meh rehashes. How many Twisted Metals? How many Tomb Raiders? How many Maddens? How many Resident Evils?

THAT's what ruined gaming. If casuals enjoy innovative controllers like the Wii-Mote then by all means, bring more of these types of casuals into gaming.

But cows, you can tell your casual fans to leave gaming and never come back. They are the reason why 50% of the games released every week are meh racing games, Grand Theft Auto wanna-bes, annual rehashes of sports games with slightly different game features but new rosters, and so on....

Wii is not ruining gaming. It's bringing it back. Gaming was ruined by PS1, and utterly destroyed by PS2. It was getting lame. Wii is bringing new life back to video games.

The truth will set you free. :)

The TC is correct! I remember standing in the store with the N64 selections on the left and the ps1 selections on the right. When it got to the point that the ps1 selections were about 3x as many as N64, I said and have been saying ever since that the PS1 ruined gaming.
