Seriously N64 had games which were godly. And i'm not biased towards nintendo either, i thouhgt PS2 was the best console last gen by a mile.
n64.
The ps1 might have had better support...but the n64 had more revolutionary games IMO.
SM64 and Zelda: OOT were two really big steps for not only the series....but for games in general.
Not to mention that Rare was at their prime on the n64.
N64 in every category for me, playing off line with friends and family > playing rpgs alone in the basement. I still like rpgs but I enjoy off line multi player a 1000 x more.Cassius128
90% of the good RPG's on Ps1 never even came out in Europe. So i couldn't even play them, the platformes were rubbish compared to N64's ones and back then it was all about meeting your friends on the weekend and playing 4 player goldeneye. Hence why it was one of the best selling games that gen.

I personally had more fun with N64, but that was because we had one at the time. If I had a PS1 at that time, I'm sure I would have enjoyed it even more than N64. I have been going back and playing all the good PS1 games, and it's a fact, PS1 had more good games than N64.
BTW PS1 for all of those.

N64 = 64 bit Ps1 = 32 bit. There wasn't a PS1 game looked half as good as Turok 2 or Prefect Dark and pre-rendoured background don't count. The first point is nothing to do with opinions, N64 was a more powerful system and the only thing it was poor at was sound due to cartrdges.

4.N64(with PSone really close behind)
How are we even arguing that the PS1 had better graphics than the N64? CD-ROM drive aside, the original Playstation was a piece of hardware crap, bolstered by a superior games lineup. The N64 had better hardware, but was held back rather nastily by its cartridge format. I loved both systems fairly equally, because the PS1 had a million games (and some truly classic ones like FFVII and VIII), and the N64 seemed to pump out Nintendo classics on a fairly regular basis (SM64, Star Fox, Zelda: OoT, etc.), not to mention some of the first decent (awesome) FPS ona console (Turok, Goldeneye, Perfect Dark).SeanBond

Outside of those FMVs that playstation CDs could store, n64 games generally had a much smoother framerate and much cleaner look.
Thats pretty much a tie for me
Loved playing my N64
Isn't number four just a re-worded number 3?

Oh believe me, the FF games were some of the most amazing looking games that generation, so it's not like I don't think the PS1 had good looking games. What I was saying is that on paper it wasn't much of a contest (someone already mentioned N64's 64 bit vs. PS1's 32 bit), but yes, when it comes down to it, as usuala talented developer will be able to get more out of a weaker system than a bad developer will out of a stronger one. I'm just unclear where people got the idea that the PS1 had better graphics...Maybe everyone should go take a look at Perfect Dark or Turok 2 with the N64 expansion pack...
All u need to know is CD > cartridge And for games Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy 7-9 and Tactics. nuff saidttobba07Battletanx, SSB, Goldeneye, Pokemon Puzzle League.

1. which system had better graphics? N64
2. which system had better games? PS1 had more variety to offer, but if you're talking about the best of the best, it's the N64 by a mile. RARE on the 64 could take anything the PS1 had to offer.

That console was so great, it gave us games like SM64, OoT, Wave race 64, 007, PD, Banjo, Konker, Smash bros.,JFG, Majoras mask....
The N64 had some great games though. Wave Race, Mario 64, Zelda OOT, Goldeneye... those were some classics. But I still maintain that Banjo and Perfect Dark were WAY overated. Even the guys at Free Radical said they though Perfect Dark had some bad design choices in it, and those are the guys who made the game (before leaving Rare to start their own company). rpawloski2458
Never say Banjo is overrated. Never. It was easily the best platformer that gen, dare i say it even better than Mario 64? And PD was underrated if anything. If it came out before 007Goldeneye it would be considered more godly than Godeneye is today. Seriously what a damn perfect game.
PS1 all the way
130 million people cant be wrong can they
gameruk2010
you mean 100 million? PS2 is going to go near 130.
Go back and compare games like Spyro, Crash, Colony Wars, FF, Res Evil, Soul Reaver, and Gran Turismo to top n64 games. I'm not saying they looked better, but they were AT LEAST comparable.rpawloski2458
No question, the devs got a lot out of the PS1 but from a tech standpoint the N64 was superior.

Well PS1 could push more polygons, and the CD drive allowed for more detailed textures and sound and more animations to be stored on the disc... N64 did look smoother and clearer (better AA and higher resolution), but the fact that MGS looks more realistic than any N64 game proves that PS1 had better hardware.

2. while few in number the N64 had some of the best and most revolutionary games ever made, but if you want JRPGs, or many types of japanese style games in general, the PS1 is king.
3.N64, many many nights of multiplayer greatness plus the awesomeness of OoT, MM, sm64, and others made for my favorite system ever.
4. N64 IMO

ahh the memories.
for me the most memorable thing about that era was, for some reason, the gameover music in OoT.
I guess I died alot in that game .
everyone her has to admitt, n64 had genre defining games. Even though i loved my ps1, n64 was the better system.
when ps2 came sony was so darn cocky that the had the gen in the bag (and they did)
when ps3 came sony thought customers were idiots and put a $600 price tag and the ps brand went to an all time low.

1. n64 definately had the best graphics. the only ps1 games that could rival n64 games were the ones with pre-rendered backgrounds. games like perfect dark, donkey kong 64, zelda oot, majoras mask, lylat wars (starfox 64),world driver championship, turok 2, micro machines 64and star wars : rogue squadron were great showcases of the n64's graphical power. of course both consoles had their graphical duffers and the ps1 had many games to rival those that i mentioned in the gameplay stakes.
2. i think the ps1 wins in this category, but that's not to say the n64 didn't have any gems. at the end of the day, if you take theopinions of others then the ps1 will win because it was much more popular than the n64.
3. i preferred the n64 because of the instant 4 player and that my friends had n64's. i mainly used my ps1 as a metal gear solid, final fantasy and gran turismo machine.
4. from a purelychildhood - teenage years enjoyment point of view i liked the n64 more simply because i played it more. had all my friends had ps1's then i probably would have preferred that.
