PS2: A system of 2 generations (56k)

I was just looking around at the game releases for the PS2 this year and i think its official.........the PS2 is dead. There are a few games releasing but this is the first year the PS2 cant compete with the other systems. Just last year which was its weakest, it recieved:

Persona 4 (EU)
Devil Summoner 2
Jack
Motorstorm
Silent Hill: SM

What i find interesting is around 2005 when the PS2 had hit its peak (so people said) and had trashed the other 2 consoles, it hit 2nd gear. It did what no other console in past gens before have done which is compete with next-gen consoles. Graphics took a huge leap forward, new ideas from devs and experiences that couldnt be found anywhere else. From the period of 2005-2009 the PS2 recieved more AAAEs than both the PS3/360 and also sold more. Granted its stlill selling well now, it just doesnt have the constant stream of games to support it.

Anyway to get things going, il ask a question but first some explanation. The PS2 was a 2 gen system. Sure some last gen systems recieve support when the successor releases but thats usually limited to sports and multiplats. The PS2 competed with the DC/Xbox/GC from 2000-2004 and then the PS3/360/Wii from 2005-2009.

What i want to ask is which era did you prefer for games overall? of course the we all mix and match but think of it as which era had more of your favourite games.

Ill use 10 games as indicators to show what was in each. Remember, these are just indicators, im not saying this is all or these are the best.

PS2 - Last gen (2000-2004)

Twisted Metal Black

Tekken Tag Tournament

Jak 3

Final Fantasy X

Metal Gear Solid 2

ICO

Gran Turismo 3

Grand Theft Auto 3

Metal Gear Solid 3

Devil May Cry 1

I also think its the system thats had the biggest graphical leap from launch to date.

Second generation just because of God of War 1 and 2 as well as DMC3

I had a PS2 for only half a year in 2007...I don't think I had many current-gen games for it. So I would have to vote for the last-gen games.

Where is my "Both" option? Anyway, yeah I agree. The PS2 still managed to compete with the 360, PS3 and Wii all the way until 2007. In 2008 and 2009 it finally started selling much less and getting less games. So yeah, a 2 ( or 1.5) gen console! =DDesmonic

Its very hard to chose PS2 was a god like console the only system which can give PS2 a run for its money this generation is the DS but still its not as great as the PS2.

The Ps2 will always be a legend in my book.8)

Actually the PC is the greatest game system.

Then comes the PS2 and then the NDS.

I like the 2nd generation PS2 games + MGS3. 8)

You forgot about Shinobi. I know that past glory and the present ones can get mixed up, but it was really good. Shinobi has surprisingly high gameplay. The game itself is very exciting.

I don't really think the PS2 is two generations long. Sony just supports their consoles longer than MS. How long was the original xbox supported for, 4 years? Some overlap is good. Nintendo does the same thing with their handhelds.

I'd place the ps2 behind the snes, n64, and the original xbox.

Sales-wise. The PS2 is the most successful console to date. Selling over 140 million units.. nothing comes even close.

Last. Jak 3 and Metal Gear Solid 2 are beastly.

the ds is definately close and will surpass it eventually. second if the wii sells for 9 years it will pass the ps2 as well.

however it is not better then snes to me or the ps1

Can't decide. 2004 & 2005 were probably the two best years, but my personal favorite game FFX came out in 2001.

PS2 had a long life cycle but thats pretty normal with successful consoles. The SNES received Fire Emblem Thracia 776 in 1999 for example (console was released in 1990). PSone died off rather quick after the PS2 was released (i believe in 2002 only a handful of madden, fifa games etc were released).

Whichever had Socom 2.
