[QUOTE="NVIDIATI"][QUOTE="locopatho"]Yeah the PS2 is a god, I think even most of SW can agree on that :)Foliage-KingPS2 was console gaming at its best. Now its just a complete mess. Its a complete mess? Why because it doesn't have teh current gen graphics :o :? Because we're left with gimmicky crap like the Wii which aside from a fewgreat games is still living in last gen, while Sony and MS battle it out with multiplats and try to one up eachother with exclusives. PS2's lineup was made of both quantity, quality and it was reasonably priced. Each console last gen had loads of exclusives making each one unique. Accessories and motion gimmicks have just killed console gaming for me this gen. I just find quality+quantity cannot go hand in hand forany ofthis gen's consoles.

I doubt there will ever be another console as good as the ps2. Games are just getting to hard to make and take too long. There are seriously almost to many good games for the ps2, because no one could ever play even half of all the really awesome titles
[QUOTE="usule"]:| lvl 35 troll? o.o (or maybe your PS2 got the DRE?) You missed out man...unless you're gaming just for shooters, in that case you still missed Socom 2. ;(wow, people still playing the ps2??? Stopped playing mine since halo 1 came out...

No the PS1 was the greatest system ever, the PS2 had high sales which eventually led to the majority of third party support but it was mainly riding on the success of its predecessor.anyone who says that the PS2 wasnt THE greatest game system EVER needs help.
ive owned all THREE playstations across the brands 3 GENERATION life cycle as well as the 2 generations of xbox.
PS2 will be fondly revered for all time by game historians such as myself.

That's like saying the NEShad 2 generations, when you compare the other early material of Super Mario Bros. and Excitebike, to late-end software of Super Mario Bros. 3 and Kirby's Adventure. Generation does not mean graphics, or quality. Just simply means successor.

I loved my N64 but it didn't have enough games to keep me going and the ones it had were soooo expensive :o, so I robbed my brothers playstation . Back then the loading times were acceptable, when I play one now Im horrified  I play most of my games straight of a harddrive so its a bit of a shock to the system.
I cant decide. The whole ps2 timeframe was the best.
But even though the PS2 is a almighty console. I prefer the PS1 to the PS2.
Now the PS1 was godly..

I went from SNES to N64 so never had any loading to speak of, when I first played PS at a friends house I asked was the console broken :P Think it was one of the Tomb Raider games, could be wrong tho, that took like over a minute of staring at a black screen to begin a level... Madness! The PS2 era was probably the peak point in the gaming industry, striking a perfect balance of quality and quantity.Brainhunter
this nailed it.this gen theres been inflated budgets, rushed games are becoming a bit more common :(
Since the "current-gen" began, the PS2 has received some good games, not all of which have been reviewed by Gamespot sadly.

Sales-wise. The PS2 is the most successful console to date. Selling over 140 million units.. nothing comes even close.
the ds is definately close and will surpass it eventually. second if the wii sells for 9 years it will pass the ps2 as well.
however it is not better then snes to me or the ps1
The DS is just a handheld. I'm talking about an actual home console. The Wii is pretty damn close, it even surpassed the NES. I think if they maintain their way, it could lead to something big.
But I'm just talking about sales. To me, I think the SNES is the best console. I'd rank the PS2 the 5th best. The original XBOX was pretty good, but MS never really gave it a chance to grow.

yea i love my ps2 but it just so happened the success of the ps1 gave all the ps2 the 3rd party support and also their were many new ideas that gen.
its not the greatest game console to me and i think the ps2 is overpraised but i do think it deserves a lot of credit for it sales

Yeah, I totally agree. PS1 gave them some room to expand. The only truly innovative thing Sony did with the PS2 was the DVD. The DVD compatibility was certainly innovative, as there was no other console with this feature before the PS2. As far as online gaming went, the PS2 pretty much fell completely flat.Modems for it weren't released until 2002, 2 years after the system's launch. And the feature was very poorly supported, and their aren't very many good games that actually utilize it. The only ones I ever heard about are SOCOM and Final Fantasy XI. Whoop-dee-doo. Even the Dreamcast, a system that included the modem right from the start, had better online support than the PS2. The original XBOX was a much better choice for online gaming IMO.
I don't think it was THE best, but their sales for a home console is pretty damn impressive.
I dont know about it being dead......i just bought Sakura Wars so long my love this year......and for a old old old game its pretty neat
I can't decide! Leave PS2 alone, no need to rip it in half!

I agree, this is just confusing :P PS2 had the best games ever released in the last decade, lets just leave it at that.
As soon as someone points out that the PS2 has lasted 2 generations, people start hailing it as the most successful system ever? The PC has lasted, and will in fact continue to last through every gaming generation.anyone who says that the PS2 wasnt THE greatest game system EVER needs help.

I actually preferred the first Xbox over the PS2......"puts up flame shield lol"walkingdream
Nothing wrong with that.
The back half of the PS2's library (2004 and later) was phenominal.
To this day I still believe the PS2 has one of the best game libraries ever. It's taken four years of having all three Gen 7 systems to have the same combined amount of games as the PS2 by itself in my collection; 45 Playstation 2 games compared to 15-17 each for Wii, 360, PS3.
Despite this, I still dont feel that many of these current games match the awesome-ness that was last gen. The PS2 is and will remain a legacy that will be very hard to match now and in the future.

Halo CE = Socom 2. You can't go wrong between them.
Although CE didn't have online, if you could get some friends to come over or LAN it, great game. Socom 2 is my favorite game ever though and I played it from launch, up until mid-2008. I still play it every now and then, but not like I used to. I would log in at least 3 hours of Socom 2 a day until about mid-2008.
I realized there was no point anymore. The community would die out (it's down to about 120 on at most whenever I get on) and games would no longer require a learning curve. Being a TPS fan, I decided to pick up Gears, only TPS out I feel that even takes a little skill (not Gears 2, that just requires you to press B)

Yeah. Unlike this gen, each console had a distinct nature to it and was really a matter of what type of games a person wanted.
If you wanted FPS, WRPG, Stealth and online you'd go to the xbox
If you wanted JRPGs, horror, action adventures and fighters you'd go to the PS2.
If you wanted platformers, Nintendo and local multiplayer you'd go to the Gamcube
And if you wanted SHMUPs, fighters and quirky games you'd go to the Dreamcast.
I sort of liked that last-gen.
I wish I was able to purchase more games back when, but the titles I did play were all top notch and memorable. Like most said, the quality and quantity was unmatched. Looking at both the line up of games for the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, it's hard to decide which one came out on top... Sony was hitting on cylinders and were destined to be the greatest. I think this whole graphics thing killed gaming IMO. I would rather have a mainstream of decent developers with unique ideas, then graphical powerhouse FPS. :?
I wish this gen never existed and Sony, MS, Ninny, and Sega were allmaking greattitles.
Definitely. It has nothing to do with nostalgia personally since even though I love the NES/SNES era, since that's what I grew up with mostly, my favorite is the PSX era since many of my favorite games came out during that time.
PS2 had a huge library of games that had something for everyone. The JRPG genre wasn't as scarce as it is now, with majority of good ones now retreating to the handhelds due to the high production costs of developing on consoles. The gamers of this generation demand a certain amount of sparkling graphics or else it is immediately dismissed as a PSN/Live Arcade/Wiiware title. Because of this, it feels like a lot of developers are scared to take risks and they're all sticking to a formula that works.
