As the 7 year old PS2 outsellsthe PS3 month after month, one may ask himself 'do the extraordinary sales of the PS2 take away from potential PS3 buyers'? Will Sony ever stop this trend?

Taker42: "I believe the phrase is "a victim of its own success". Great way to sum up what I tried to explain. :)

Well considering the PS2 actually makes money like crazyand the PS3 sucks it up like a vacum I don't know they should drop the PS3, and make PS2.75s.Heck I'mnot a marketing genious.. but it seems kinda obvious if they made a white PS2,instead of a PS3 they would be better off.

The price JUST got lower, and Sony is hurting Sony. Seeing as they are trying to gain a larger install base for their new gen console.

How is making money hurting Sony? if anything this hurts Microsoft more. Because those new ps2 owners if they want to get a next gen-system will only be able to play their ps2 games on a ps3. And that is a factor to many gamers out there.

the ps3 is still the highest console out. so the price drop only helped a little. if it was 400 then you'll see some selling. but sony not going to stop milking the cow if its still producing milk. i think this will be the last year will see games come out for the ps2. it'll still sell. its just more money for sony.

Making money IS good for Sony, I'm saying that since they are competing in the new race, (and are losing BTW) wouldn't it be more beneficial for Sony to stop making the PS2 (not stop making games for it), and get the people who want a Playstation to choose 3 over 2...

Yes it is, just look at two of the best PS2 games out, FFXII and GoW 2. They released right around the PS3 launch, and you better believe people wouldn't becomplaining about a) the PS3's lack of games and b) the PS3's sales if those games were available at launch.

Most of the current PS2 sales are because of Guiter Hero, Singstar, and probably some other gimmicks.

Oh, and that sweet back catalog. The only thing hurting the Playstation 3 is a lot of things going wrong day in and day out.

They are potential Wii and Xbox360 owners too.

Playstation 2 is seriously hurting the install base of the Playstation 3. By the time Playstation 2 dies out, Playstation 3 will be too far behind the competition to be able to compete for third party.

That 100+ million userbase isn't all going to buy a PS3. Many have moved on to the Xbox 360 and some have bought a Wii. A serious core group that were PS2 last generation are partying on Microsoft's boat.

How could it possibly be hurting the PS3? If someone is just now plunking down $130 or however much for a PS2, do you really think they were a potential customer for a $500 system?

actually ps2 owners are just potential ps3 owners. How dumb of me.... theyve been waiting and are still waiting all this timeon the PS3 to drop its price even further, while they watch the sheep and lemms have fun. It would make a nice love novel about loyalty towards something....lol

with current trends... well u get the point. sony isnt worried. Yeah, they are not worried at all, they justdrop their price temporarly on their non-selling console to get rid of a discontinued SKU just to please their waiting cows.

TRUE! a few guys on GS that I know just made the PS2-Xbox 360 transition, And just like the PS2 was 5 years ago, Xbox 360 is loaded with AA, and AAA titles.
