PS3 browser!

OMG I've just come back from using the PS3 browser, I cannot belive people are using this as a great feature over the xbox, Its complete rubbish.

I have never seen something so slow and buggy, if you manage to load the page without it crashing and/or wasting away while you wait, you have to contend with awkward controls and incompatable sites! Firefox FTW!

Firefox is Slow.

Switch to something based on Webkit.

Also, please graduate from the year 2006.

It's a good benchmark, but it is only for dynamic elements.

Keep in mind those chrome scores are my own experimental builds, and are not indicative of chrome. (chrome is usually faster)

That 0 score was from an iPod :P

It stopped loading the javascript before the test was through.

It is the worst browser I've used. So yeah, useless really.

I always thought the PS3 browser was a very underrated feature,i can load a typical page in about 3 seconds, i can stream gametrailer, youtube and if you're from the US you can even watch free TV shows and movies on hulu, you can also download free themes, videos, music ect straight to your PS3 HDD and you can also check your email,facebook,twitter,bebo,myspace Why should this count as a negative against the PS3 ? It is a little buggy, i'll give you that but its no where near as bad as you make it sound plus it's always being improved upon through firmware updates.micky4889

It would have been very hard to get a "popular browser" due to licensing and the possibility of reveilling inner workings of the PS3 through the source code (ie, if they went with Gecko or Webkit engines, which are Open Source but require any changes to the code be made public.)

They did give us flash 9 though, which is unheard of on any other console.

The most recent version the Wii has is 7 i think.

It works fine for me. I've used it for Gamespot, N4G Allakhazam, YouTube and many other sites without any problems. It's not OMG WOAH or anything, but it's certainly functional, and it is definitely a feature over 360. If you're having so many problems, I'd wonder what kind of sites you're trying to use...jonnyt61

If your implying that all I have tried to use the ps3 browser for is pr0n, I would seriously think you are watching my every move!

Firefox might have worked cause of the whole linux and the fact theres versions of yellowdog that do support Cell and most likely will come with Firefox.Wouldnt be too tough a job in some aspects and i dont see how much of it would actually change :/ since the OS design and the input method.

Oh god please, dont mention the wii browser. On a 50" tv you can actually see the pixels of every word not to mention everything looks magnified 10x. Infact the Wii on a 50" screen looks really bad whatever your doing!

It sucks.

Programers were able to take advantage of the browser too, by creating media server programs and other aps for the PS3.

Well converting an open source program for use with a specific system would be easier then creating one from scratch however you look at it. I think the ps3 has some memory issues though as streaming large HD results in a very jerky experience, even when you have completed the streaming before watching it.

No its great if you love really bad security and what other browser can take you on a journey of nostalgia as you remember all those wonderfull days on a dial up modem.

I use the PS3 browser as my main (i no longer have my PC anymore) and disagree.

It's never run slow for me infact it runs pretty quick most of the time (and that's only on a 2mb connection), as for the crashing, i've had the browser lock up on me once in the past 2 weeks BUT i do agree it does lockup sometimes. As for the controls, i use my keyboard and mouse for it and for the most part it's easy to use (you just have to get used to the F keys being for favourites etc) and using the controller is aCtully very very easy so i disagree with the awkward controls.

There are some sites that don't work BUT the browser works on all the sites i use and the main ones that people use to compair it to the 360 (twitter, facebook, myspace etc), people haven't said the PS3 browser is a great feature over the xbox in years, most say that the fact xbox is getting twitter/facebook isn't as big a plus as some make out as the PS3 has had access to these for years due to the browser.

It's not that it would be hard to port it, it is that it would give people clues as to the workings of the PS3 OS if the source was made public, which it would have to if they used Webkit or Gecko (Safari and Firefox's HTML rendering engines) and allow for possibly quick cracking of the PS3's security mesures and then: Hello piracy.

The linux OS can't play PS3 games, or even use the GPU at the moment, so sony doesn't mind people looking at that.

And the Browser used in the PS3 isn't really built from scratch, it is a Netfront browser, mainly used in phones and low power, low screenspace devices (also on the PSP)

I wasn't talking about the browser. I was talking about Linux on the PS3.

Actualy, PS3 linux is used quite a bit in a relative way.

it is a big enough platform for several of the big name linux OSes to support. YDL the best IMO, then you can get Fedora Core and *shiver* Ubuntu.

There are probably more but... i stick with YDL, so i could not tell you.

Lol, it's not that bad.

I only use it for downloading PS3 themes(as many as I want for free, custom made by people) and going on Youtube.

It's fine for those, it's not that slow but it is pretty incompatible.

Oh god I can't bare the PS3 browser. Why anyone would want to look something up on their system over a PC.

for example im in my front room now with 6 ppl who wanna watch some clips from youtube, unless I run a cable from my room to my TV it means everyone huddeled round my 19" screen with nowhere to sit! Plus watching movie trailers, AVI files, films etc etc. Untill they give us wireless screen access the tv browser will be handy.

the ps3 browser is much better then when it launched it works great now....I use it for ...raunchy sites that would give adware to my pc >.>

Im pretty sure everyone in the world realizes the PSN browers is horrible.
