I seriously believe that the PS3 will still eventually come up with good sales figures of 75 Million plus.

1) In 2-3 years HDTV will be much more widely used: price will come down

2) People will be attracted by Hi def gaming including all those Wii owners wanting a second console

3) The price of the PS3 would have dropped considerably maybe $200-299 dollars

4) New models of the PS3 slimline, Home, BC via emulation and firmware update

5) The Power of the PS3 will start to be fully realised and developers will start using the full capabilities of the System Blu ray etc

6) Blu ray user base will start to increase quite significantly

7) Excellent back catalogue

8) Playstation brand is till there believe it or not, the main obstacle to more sales is price

9) Even if MS releases a new console, PS3 will have a much larger user base, more 3rd party support , will be near maxing out on graphics capability etc and most importantly MUCH MORE cheaper.

lol. I don't see more than 30-40 million, but, you know, it's all crystal balls at this point in the game. Fragile stuff.

My guess is around the 80 million mark. I wouldn't even rule out 100 million, but that would be one hell of an upward climb.

I suspect:

Wii - 100 million, may continue to sell after the end of the generation

X360 - 45 million

PS3 - 45 million

I feel the PS3 can catch up with the X360, but by then next generation will have come around.

The PC is already outdating the PS3's graphics, I think the dream is over, it's not going to take off like everyone wanted it to. I'm sorry, but Sony failed its fanbase this gen. I wish I could say otherwise.

Waiting for the price to go down? We can't expect all 127 million PS2 owners to buy the PS3 after only 18 months. Of course, I don't expect ALL 127 million to buy the PS3, but quite a lot.

I'd say just as many people that kept with Sony and went from PS2 to PS3 bought an Xbox when it came out and then decided to go with 360 since they liked the regular Xbox and it was the first "next gen" released.

well surely its sales will continue to increase, specially when the exlusives such as MGS, FF, GOW etc etc will be released....

It also depends how much Wii sales will do, because its really doing great... I dont see Xbox360 as the main rival in sales right now, and not because it has no games but i dont see the console exceeding the 30million mark...

The question remains how many fans of the PS2 will get a PS3 once the big games get released, MGSIV will be an important test for PS3... my assumption (at best) would be shifting 700k units in 6 weeks after MGSIV is released...

And I'll tell you how irrelevant HD and Blu-ray is. Does anyone remember the report last year? Where they said 60% of PS3 owners didn't even know it was a blu-ray player? And about half of them didn't know it could do HD, or what HD was? I had a field day with that.

http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20070809-report-gamers-largely-clueless-about-next-gen-console-media-capabilities.html

"In some ways, the higher cost of entry may be helping the PlayStation 3 in this respect. 50 percent of gamers in the study knew the system featured high-definition graphics, compared to the 30 percent of gamers who knew about the high-definition function of the 360."

Never forget.

I'm predicting the PS3 to crack 60 million at most. Sells will definitely pick up but I really doubt it'll be a 100 million breaker like it's predecessors.

You do know that consoles sell the most when they go below $300 right? Not every PS2 gamer was a hardcore Sony fan that had to drop $600 on a console they really only use to play Madden and some shooters.

Not necessarily 3-4 years, the price will come down before that. And yeah, I know a lot of them have moved onto the Wii, that's why I doubt all 127 million will buy a PS3.

But obviously a lot of PS2 owners will go to PS3 once GT5, FF13, GOW3 etc all arrive with a $300 or less price tag. Let's not forget, it beat the 360 last year despite the high price and lack of heavy hitters.

if you look at the sales of those games, they barely reached 15% of the 120 million ps2 users. i seriously think that you guys are severely overestimating the number of ps2 users that are just waiting for a ps3 price drop.

The PS3 will only have a chance if it remains the cheapest bluray player. Once other players get below that price, say bye bye.

And you can have all the 'power' you want on paper but when it's too complex or just too much work for dev's to use, whats the point? You should look up the term over engineered.

As a format, Blu-ray is crashing and burning. Seriously, Blu-ray is not sustaining the Playstation 3. The Playstation Brand is.

True enough. As for PS2 owners, You have your handful of them who moved on to the 360 or Wii, and then you have people like me who are still just gaming on the PS2.

Well it is failing in Japan simply because there are NO games they want to play on the system. When you have a slim PS3, at a reasonable price with the RPG's that they want sales will go up Significantly. Yeah the Wii might outsell the PS3 but I see people owning two consoles eventuallay when there is actually a reason to.

I mean look at it this way

1) the PS3 has hardly any good quality games compared to the PS2

2) Does not have a wide variety of games like the PS2

3) Is Still relatively expensive

Baring in mind all of the above the PS3 is not doing to bad. It is still outselling the 360 WW. Even though the 360 has a FAR better line up. And tbh people that want a 360 have got one, where as there are loads of people that probably want a PS3 but wont get one due price and/or lack of games.

When the price and the games come, so will the sales.

you are forgetting one thing, PRICE. $400 dollars for a PS3 is far to expensive for the avergae consumer. Once the PS3 is at $249-299 dollars, with a decent amount of games it will eventually exceed 60 million. I am not saying liftime sales will exceed the Wii, But Lots of Wii owners I think will eventually get second consoles.

Well the PS3 is at 13 mil as of now. IF we go by Sony's modest estimates of 10 mil this year.

Lets say it sells 10 mil per year thats like 40 mil more PS3's in 4 years: At its current rate, no price cuts and no games.

I don't see the PS3 breaking 30 million.

Sales decrease, and price drops have never caused sales to double for a long time before... (The idea behind a price drop is to keep the current sales rate, not to double it, they only cut the price when the sales fall to much, to spike back to normal...)

The boost from a price-cut will have a much greater impact on the PS3, and last long than the 360/Wii imo.

You expect them to take 2 or 3 years worth of sales and do 3x that in the next 2 or 3 years? Sales aren't exponential, especially for losing consoles, they reduce year over year. Especially after the second year, like the 360 is now.Ukapx

you are forgetting one thing, PRICE. $400 dollars for a PS3 is far to expensive for the avergae consumer. Once the PS3 is at $249-299 dollars, with a decent amount of games it will eventually exceed 60 million. I am not saying liftime sales will exceed the Wii, But Lots of Wii owners I think will eventually get second consoles.

once that happens, Wii will be at $149-199 and xbox360 at $199-249.

just like you expect ps3 sales to increase with a price drop, you can expect the same for the other consoles.

The boost from a price-cut will have a much greater impact on the PS3, and last long than the 360/Wii imo.

and your reason is...?

Well the PS3 is at 13 mil as of now. IF we go by Sony's modest estimates of 10 mil this year.

Lets say it sells 10 mil per year thats like 40 mil more PS3's in 4 years: At its current rate, no price cuts and no games.

Is it on pace for that...I mean a 1/3 of the year is gone... how much has it sold so far this year?

2/3 million, but remember most of the sales are in the last quarter.

Yes very much true. I think this year is going to be slightly abnormal due to GTAIV in the spring.

I don't see the PS3 breaking 30 million.

Sales decrease, and price drops have never caused sales to double for a long time before... (The idea behind a price drop is to keep the current sales rate, not to double it, they only cut the price when the sales fall to much, to spike back to normal...)

GundamGuy0

The PS3 was and still is not at a reasonable price. The price it is at now is just about ok for a launch price if you get what im trying to say.

Floppy_Jim

Brand loyaty is very weak in the video game market, so I really don't buy that just becasue people bought a PS2, they'll likely buy a PS3. Just look at previous history.

my question is why?

if all things equal, and each console gets a price drop at the same time, why would the ps3's price drop have a greater impact and last longer?

I dunno, Sony seem to have a very loyal fanbase. Maybe moreso than Nintendo. Especially in Europe- the PS3 has overtaken the 360 there despite the 16 month head start. If it wasn't for brand loyalty, I doubt the PS3 would have outsold the 360 last year. The PS brand is still pretty friggin' powerful.

ok, as a lemming, ill try to make the most non-biased estimate I can

Wii - 120 - 125 million by 2012 (vast improvement over Gamecube)

PS3 - 50 - 55 million by 2012 (shows how far the PS brand has degraded since PS2 days)

360 - 45 - 50 million by 2012 (vast imporvement over origional Xbox)

I have also factored in the Xbox 362 launch around holiday 2010 to take away market staying power of the PS3. Wii wont be affected as it has broad appeal. And 360 will be dirt cheap when the next Xbox is launched, which will help its sales.

That is the why. As of now the main reason why PS3 is not selling is because it is far to expensive and/or it has no games. For the Wii and 360 this is not the case.

how can that be when Europe was sony land last gen, yet the Wii has vastly outsold the ps3 this gen?

loyal fanbase argument has not been proven in any way

ok. besides blu-ray, what advantage does the ps3 have over the 360? they share 80% of their games.

360 costs less, has way more games. so by your logic, it should outsell the ps3 with a price drop.

The Playstation brand is there. The consoles is far to pricey and it has no real good games. Eventually it will sell, probably not more than Wii though.

Because of the huge price difference. Come on, if the PS3 and Wii were the same price, we all know who would be winning. And the gap between PS3 and Wii in Europe is a lot smaller than the gaps in Japan and America. I'm just saying brand loyalty is one of the reasons the PS3 is doing well, especially in Europe.

For example:

The PS3 has sold more consoles in Europe than America.

Meanwhile, the Wii and 360 have sold more consoles in America than Europe.

Europe just loves the PS brand.
