it seems like after 2 years or so all ps3s are starting to break down. so many of my friends are on their second or third ps3 and mine is on the verge of breaking too. Anyone who still thinks the fail rate is 2-8% needs to open their eyes.

Hearsay, indeed, is not a great foundation for laying forth an argument. You need some factual proof to back up your assertion.Stevo_the_gamerjust looking around the internet. on these forums , on youtube, on other forums you see everyone complaining about the ylod. I'm not positive that its higher than the 360, but i heard that the newer models of the 360 are not prone to the RRoD, plus there is a 3 year warranty.
Just going from what I've heard in my school it seems to be only affecting those who bought a 60gb PS3. And the only way they could have one of those is if they are rich enough (or their parents are) to have got one around the launch time. Some of those people just chucked their old PS3 and bought new ones.guitarsrock4evathats pretty much what i did with my 60. well i still have it siting in its box.
So you + your friends = everyone? How can you even come up with the PS3 having a higher failure rate than the Xbox 360 by only stating your own situation as an example?it seems like after 2 years or so all ps3s are starting to break down. so many of my friends are on their second or third ps3 and mine is on the verge of breaking too. 60gb PS3s are the only ones that break down. The PS2 chip causes some problems or something.ParasomniacYeah mines won't play PS2 games anymore, they always freeze at the title screen, but it still plays PS1/3 games and DVD movies perfectly.

Same, no problems at all.
you forgot to knock on the wood. :P hopefully mine does the same.
It is somewhat high, but as high as RROD? No.
Im on my second ps3, which i got fixed for free even after 1 year and 8 months, thats way after the guarantee had expired. All my save files are gone, but thanx for the fix sony :)

Hehe nah will not knock on the wood, someway i want my Ps3 to break so i get a reason to get a Slim i really want one hehe. Ps3 is build with quality, it wont break so guess i never get my Slim :(
My personal expierence is 3 RROD's in under 2 years and my launch 60gig PS3 works like a champ.wooooode
I had two RROD's and finally bought an Elite a year and a half ago...knock on wood no more problems. I now own two PS3's and have never had a problem...FYI I did had to use the warranty for my original Wii...
like most things i blame the chance of any failure down to sheer luck and a lack of common sense.
Dont think they are higher out of all my friends i am the only person to have a PS3 YLOD on me and about 60% of my friends own PS3s.
I doubt it is higher then the 360 failure rate, but I am fairly certain that it IS somewhat high
In truth I do suspect alot of the meltdowns on both consoles are caused by users neclecting them, this gen of consoles is very different then the old timers, they require alot of air intake, and do not tolerate dust at all.
Could very well be, for last year that is. I've 4 friends with PS3s And 3 of them had to replace their PS3.

The reason why X360 fail rate become a hot topic was because retailers and the companies that fix the console came out and said there was a big problem with X360. You are always going to have people complaining about broken electronics but the key are the people who see the returns and they know if their is a serious problem when they can't get it repaired. The moment that their companies said they were going to refund their customers warrenties for the X360, you knew there was a serious problem they couldn't fix. I don't see that for the PS3 at all.

I barely see threads about YLOD except threads like these that have now research or polls backing up the claim.

Well i don't see this happening and the fail rate surely isn't higher then the 360. I guess from your logic that because i've had a 360 fail and have yet to have a PS3 fail and that i've seen forums/videos/pics on the net that the 360 has a much higher fail rate. Poor kid.
Everyone i know with a 60gb model, including myself has broken, infact i can only think of 2 people i know with ps3's which have not brokenit seems like after 2 years or so all ps3s are starting to break down. so many of my friends are on their second or third ps3 and mine is on the verge of breaking too. I've never had prob with my N64, PSone, PS2, GBA SP, GC, PS3 & WII so that means their failure rate is 0%! :o
The only prob I had on my PS3 slim was Midnight Club freezing after a race. That's pretty much it.
I've never heard from someone, in real life, of a PS3 breaking.
My main group of friends is six kids (All with 360s), and they have all gone through atleast 2 systems. One of them on his 6th (Atleast he claims).
Same, My Ps3 is near launch 60GB version and zero problems.**Touchwood** My PS3 is around 3 years old, and it never has any problems.

owned! RROD has become so common that nobody talks about it anymore... it just exists, you learn to live with it. ylod is really rare (at least in my experience with friends, family and my ps3) in the other hand. so when it happens everyone talks about it.LOL I got over 20 friends and all of them got 60 GB and 40 GB models and none of them had any problems with their PS3s so I guess this makes PS3 failure rate 0%.

My 80 GB went to the Dr after 1 year and 3 months of loyal service. Bluray drive stopped working. The system itself was still playing digital games. Sony fixed it for free and sent me a new 80 GB. That was a year ago and I haven't had any problems since.
My xbox RROD'd twice before i sold it.

My PS3 died last night. I just got done watching a blu ray movie and ejected it so luckily nothing is in the drive. After playing some music on the hard drive for about 30 minutes all of a sudden the PS3 just shut off. YLOD! The PS3 immediately lost connectivity to the controllers. Now when I hit the power button it goes green, then quickly to yellow, then quickly to a flashing red accompanied by three beeps. Holding down the power button does nothing. There are videos of this on youtube that show exactly what is happening to me right now:

I have a launch 60gb I got on December 8th of 2006. It lasted almost 3 years and 1 month to the day. I tried to swap back to my old hard drive (changed it out last week for a new 500gb Seagate Momentus that was working gloriously) but that didn't change anything, tried to start it up without the hard drive in it (a rumored possible fix) and that did nothing. It looks like the only way to fix it is to take apart the PS3 and run a heat gun over the CPU and GPU for a few minutes to fix the ruined solder connections. Of course this voids any warranty and makes any deal between Sony and myself for replacement void. All in all I am VERY disappointed that my $600 PS3 is now broken (I just got MW2 and Assassins Creed 2) but I have to admit there is no other machine I use more than it. This is an understandable risk taken when buying a launch console.
When it comes down to Sony support, I did call Sony and they gave me 2 options. Send in my broken 60gb Ps3 and pay $149 to fix it as well as $29 to ship. This means I will get my 60gb back. OR, I can send in my broken 60gb and trade it out for a 120gb PS3 slim. This will cost me $119 plus $29 to ship. I'm not comfortable paying $178 for them to disassemble my PS3 so they can fix the connections around the GPU and CPU. To me that seems a bit overpriced. On the other hand, if I do trade it out for a PS3 slim I only get a 90 day warranty according to customer support. This means after a few months I could easily be in the same situation. My last option is to pay about $300 (which I would have to save up for) and get a new PS3 slim and an extended warranty from the store I purchase it from.
Any thoughts or ideas?
Hearsay, indeed, is not a great foundation for laying forth an argument. You need some factual proof to back up your assertion.Stevo_the_gamerit's actually 10% according to GS, personally i doubt it's that high, but i am suspicious of the slim, the PS3 actually runs hotter than the 360, it uses more power, but the colling system in it was super efficient, the slim model doesn't have the same cooling system

Apparently, hearsay IS valid as evidence, based on the fact that religion exists as 'fact' mwahahaha! Anyways, yes i've heard other people have had theirs break too. If this is true, i'm guessing that the power needed for todays graphics just overheats the hardware... still require larger properly cooled cases i guess.
