our PS3 is the PS3 Phat and it's fine as dandy.
I think it's the PS3 Slim that has problems.

I'm not positive that its higher than the 360, but i heard that the newer models of the 360 are not prone to the RRoD, plus there is a 3 year warranty.
LMAO, I'm not going to argue which one has the higher failure rate but you really should understand the difference between fact and things you may or may not find on the internet. YouTube  Ya, I heard the elite was RROD free when released with the Jasper joke, I made the mistake of buying one and that lasted a whole 5 months. What's it called now Falcon, maybe gullible chipset.

it seems like after 2 years or so all ps3s are starting to break down. so many of my friends are on their second or third ps3 and mine is on the verge of breaking too. Anyone who still thinks the fail rate is 2-8% needs to open their eyes.

My PS3 died last night. I just got done watching a blu ray movie and ejected it so luckily nothing is in the drive. After playing some music on the hard drive for about 30 minutes all of a sudden the PS3 just shut off. YLOD! The PS3 immediately lost connectivity to the controllers. Now when I hit the power button it goes green, then quickly to yellow, then quickly to a flashing red accompanied by three beeps. Holding down the power button does nothing. There are videos of this on youtube that show exactly what is happening to me right now:

I have a launch 60gb I got on December 8th of 2006. It lasted almost 3 years and 1 month to the day. I tried to swap back to my old hard drive (changed it out last week for a new 500gb Seagate Momentus that was working gloriously) but that didn't change anything, tried to start it up without the hard drive in it (a rumored possible fix) and that did nothing. It looks like the only way to fix it is to take apart the PS3 and run a heat gun over the CPU and GPU for a few minutes to fix the ruined solder connections. Of course this voids any warranty and makes any deal between Sony and myself for replacement void. All in all I am VERY disappointed that my $600 PS3 is now broken (I just got MW2 and Assassins Creed 2) but I have to admit there is no other machine I use more than it. This is an understandable risk taken when buying a launch console.
They are lying to you like they lied to me. Your warranty expired on December 8, 2007, around the same time as mine. You can open it up and do as you want, but if you send it in and they deem it unrepairable because of something you did, then they will not fix it. Overall it is complete bs from Sony and they are pathetic for not fixing launch models for free from what is clearly a design flaw. The cooling inside the phat PS3s is a joke, the fan is trash, the heat pipes and heat sink are trash. We have fixed my broken 60gb 2 times with the reflow method, it is not difficult if you are good at disassembling and reassembling electronics. I also own a Slim now.
how about becuase the recent influx in people buying it here kets do some math
lets say there is 100,000,000 ps3s sold
nevermind no1 listens to me
if anyone wants to hear the rest of this tell me

Yet if every owner with a working PS3 came on these forums, youtube, and other forums saying "My PS3 is working fine guys, not to worry", you would be thinking otherwise, eh? If some type of electronic breaks down, users automatically hit the Internet before calling up the company that made it nowadays.
ppl need to clean there systems more regularly. That and general hardware failures are the causes of ylod13C
Someone I know has all of their vents on the PS3 clogged with dust and it is on a carpet, but my system got the YLOD which I dusted and kept in a cool spot at all times. Nothing you do can prevent it. Just have to be lucky.

yeah maybe you're right thats why im surprised many PS3 owners want to jump from the slim type. And the phat one is more better looking too. :?

Well what I meant by what you put in bold was that I would void that limited warranty where if I pry open my PS3 I can no longer send it in for a replacement one, as you mentioned. I kind of think it's BS too if this is a widespread problem but there's not much I can really do about it. How is the slim btw? I'm thinking of just getting one of those. You like?it's actually 10% according to GS, personally i doubt it's that high, but i am suspicious of the slim, the PS3 actually runs hotter than the 360, it uses more power, but the colling system in it was super efficient, the slim model doesn't have the same cooling system[QUOTE="delta3074"][QUOTE="Stevo_the_gamer"]Hearsay, indeed, is not a great foundation for laying forth an argument. i want an old 40gb, apparently you can reverese the fans on it to clean it outMy personal experience. Every person I meet that has a 360, I ask them how many RROD's they've had. 1, yes only ONE person has said zero(met him today, I actually congratulated him). Among the hundreds of people I've talked too(yeah, my work has a high turnover rate). Of my actual friends with 360's, being 4, each has had at LEAST 2 RROD's. one of them was on NEW systems each time and he now owns 2 so that he has one working while the other is gone.
Now of the people I know that have PS3's, being 6, NOT ONE has broken down or shown ANY hint of ware. And my own PS3 spends more hours of the day turned on then it does off. Not always gaming but it's still on, doing something be it playing music, movies, whatever.
thats pretty much what i did with my 60. well i still have it siting in its box.[QUOTE="guitarsrock4eva"]Just going from what I've heard in my school it seems to be only affecting those who bought a 60gb PS3. And the only way they could have one of those is if they are rich enough (or their parents are) to have got one around the launch time. Some of those people just chucked their old PS3 and bought new ones.iamshivy
My 60 runs like a queen, It's never going to fail me, as haven'tmy launch 360 done yet either
thats wierd and all but Ive had my ps3 for 3 years and its like brand new tthe only ps3s I know that have problems are the 20 GB ones if you get a 60GB one buy a new computer hardrive for it (up to 750GB) not even saying you have to buy the hardrive but with the 60 GB you'll be fineAwesome-X23666
Why did you bump a thread from January?
Quick math, let's assume only 1 million people own a PS3, 1,000,000 x 0.08 = 80,000. I am sure your friends + you could be within those 80,000salxisI know 8 people in real life with ps3s excluding myself and all of ours are dead. Imo ps3 is only getting away because of all the rrod talk but the failrue rate seems to be definitely as high. My fat died twice, died, repaired, then died again and its the same for 2 of thsoe other 8,it died twice.
I havent heard much about the slim but the fats failure rate is defintiely high.

Everyone I know says the same thing, that PS3's are crap. Everyone. You know, 3 of my friends at school and like the entire internet. All of it. Yeah. And they not only breakdown, but they explode. And cause cancer. PS3s also have offensive political and religious affiliations. Thats why the 360 is like totally awesome.beekayjayThis post is a WIN!
