So with more and more games and also all the demos having optional to mandatory installations that would quickly used up all your PS3 HDD space, some might say one solution is get a bigger HDD. But here's the question, how are you going to be able to transfer your game saves, data, and files from your old HDD to your bigger HDD? I think this solution is just another problem.

theres already an empty HDD space in the back of the PS3, so you can just add a 200 GB for $100

I think this is what the back up utility is for. of course youd need a flash drvie or an external hard drive that is big enough to hold all of your stuff though. that could be a problem.

an 80/60/40 gb is fine enough, you really dont have to install any games unless it was from the PSN Network, and those files are less than a 1 GB. As for demos, usually people just keep them and then delete them later on. Its hard to use all that space up.

Anyways, you have an empty HDD port for the PS3, all you have to do is stick in a new one and just save it on there.. its simple

what are you talking about? Last time I check PS3 owners dont have to fork over 100 dollars for a WiFi addon, unless you got a cable running through your entire house. Also we dont have to pay for our online fee... so what are you talking about money money money?

well with 5 gig installs memory cards and flash drives wouldn't work well. External could work. does the ps3 allow game installs to be on external hdds?

"unless you have a cable running through your entire house."

After experencing my friends wireless networks that's exactly what I have for both my 360 and PS3.

Say that you don't have USB Flashes or Memory Cards, is there another way for transfers like how the 360s did it with their transfer cables? Or you're just SOL?

i think there is a way to transfer directly from hard drive to hard drive, youd have to ask someone else though because i really have no clue what you would need for it

Atm I have 25GB/37GB for a 40GB PS3 user (hmm I wonder why it says I have 37GB total when I have a 40GB :|).

Only stuff I have on my HDD is 1 DMC4 save file,1 Uncharted save file,NG sigma demo and the update that was from DMC4...and now I have 25GB left...

I don't think you can transfer the game installs, just the save games and other data you might have one there (music, video, pictures). I'd figure your best option is to just do the game saves and re-install games as needed.

it says 37GB because that's Gigabytes which is what most computers will show the capacity as. the 40GB is Gibibyte which is a a measure in bits rather than bytes. It's what all the harddrive manufactures started doing a while back. (at one time they did use bytes). a really good way to skim the consumer. kinda like how monitors used to have 15 inch but only 14.3 viewable.

Same crap happened to me when i first got my PS3. I downloaded a couple of demos & like 2-3 game saves & what do you know, i have like 20gb left!? :o When i asked in the PS3 forums, no one had a definate answer as to where 20gbs mysteriously disappeared to. lol Oh well, i haven't really touched my PS3 since X-Mas time.

Another thing i found wierd when i finally turned on my PS3 tonight....I wanted to try out PS3's streaming since i always use my X360 for medi stuff. Anyways, it found my PC & proper folders...but guess what? It said no tracks inside the folders? WTH is that about??!? Guess i'll stick with X360 for my media needs

You dont need to transfer it from hard drive to hard drive.. just plug in your USB or an external HDD in the HDD port in the side and just save files in there... if you really wanted to transfer it from hard drive to hard drive, you can do that too, but there is really no point

That's nice. Installing 5GB's of data on the HDD for each game is rubbish. I''ll be buying multiplats for 360, which do not require such nonsense. Thank god I own both consoles.

Reading comprehension FTW!

I meant each game that requires it.

Anyways, there are like 5 games thus far that do this. Only 3 are required that I know of in the future, which are DMC4 (out now. Takes up 4,9GB's), Hot Shots Golf (5GB's) and Lost Planet (not quite 5GB's). These are the ones that are not optional. It's just heatin' up.

It sucks for the 20g and 40g ps3 owners which is most likely the majority of PS3 owners (80g is prolly up there too, but its to expensive for casuals).

I have 2 saved game files and a NG sigma demo I have 25 gigs out of 37 gigs....WTH happened to the other 12 gigs!? (even the dmc4 update I should have at least almost 30 gigs of memory which atm 25 gigs now makes me have to choose what I buy more carefully now and most likely I'll pass on Home unless its like a 5 gig installation which I doubt it.

ReverseCycology

Firstly, your bias is showing. The Transfer cables is a joke, and the price M$ is charging for the 120gig HDD is tantamount to Highway robbery.I should know, I bought it and I am currently using if for my Halo Model. It was a one way transfer that isn't secured and requires a disk. It's better than nothing, but it was not sound.

The PS3 HDD's you can get the same 120gig HDD for PS3 for a measly $70, cheaper if you look around. Secondly, who needs 120gigs, that's A HUGE JUMP!

Okay, thirdly, have you not read any posts in this thread?

You can simply connect your old HDD via USB, use a Memory card, or simply put the the New Larger HDD in the second slot equipped on the PS3. That seems to be the best solution.

I too have both consoles, the difference is buying multiplats can be dangerous for your 360 due to RROD.

Being on my 3rd 360, I baby that sucker more than ever. I only buy superior version's for 360, and if they are equal, the 360 gets the night off. RROD is a factor for my purchases.

So, PS3 needs a new HDD now as a must buy to play all games with installing / uninstalling ?

That is, it just got even more expensive ???

hate to break your fanboy fun, but you dont actually have to buy ANY official sony product in order to replace harddrives. . .

on the backup issue you can just put gamesaves on a USB stick and leave music and photos and videos and then put it on the bigger hard drive later on manually. . . that is if you can be bothered.

So, PS3 needs a new HDD now as a must buy to play all games with installing / uninstalling ?

That is, it just got even more expensive ???

saolin323

Yeah, the PS3 is SOOOOOO much more than the WiFi-less, Xbox Live chargin', HD-DVD is dead M$ is still supportin', No HDD standard, RROD filled, Costly AA Battery usin' Controller, HDMI 1.2, Last Gen DVD are still cool, DRM rules, 360.

$50 dollars can get you a lot sometimes...and a Blu-Ray Player to boot!

I too have both consoles, the difference is buying multiplats can be dangerous for your 360 due to RROD.

Being on my 3rd 360, I baby that sucker more than ever. I only buy superior version's for 360, and if they are equal, the 360 gets the night off. RROD is a factor for my purchases.

same for me after rrod the xbox is now exclusives only

Whats the benefit of having blu ray then if games still have mandatory installations? It makes it look even less beneficial when the same game on DVD does not need installations, I thought that the whole point in having blu ray was to give devs more space.

Blame Developers. The Multiplats seem to be the worst at this...not that this is actually a benefit only available on PS3.

Even hot shots golf has mandatory installations (5gb), which I believe is a 1st party game.

As the system is out longer, developers will make more efficient games. It's true, if this continues, it could be an inconvenience, however, It won't.

The PS2 memory card overtime held more and more due to increased efficiency.

You can't really blame devs. They're doing what they think is best for the PS3. I saw you posted somewhere that DMC4 for the X360 took 3-10secs in some areas? hMMm i don't remember waiting that long & iv've beaten the game? Anyways, point being....Capcom is basically telling you, if we didn't do this "manditory" installation, you may have been waiting 10-20secs on PS3. It's quite obvious there are reasons for these installations & data being cached with most of these PS3 games. Honestly, there is no c0w excuse you could give...X360 iterations don't have these "manditories". Look at the first multiplats, even without a standard HDD, X360 versions were loading faster than PS3. And now, PS3 is installing & caching just to keep up! Personally, i don't like where this is heading. If devs see this as their only way out, we're going to be seeing 5gb or more on the daily. *SMH*

Yeah. It's going to be trying times for anyone who owns a PS3, in the future. When the rarely occasional game comes along with an install, they'll completely run out of space, because once it's on there they obviously can never delete it. Because months later after they've finished it, waiting between 10-20 minutes for an install will be too devastating. Additional purchases must be made. There is NO OTHER WAY!
