Say that you don't have USB Flashes or Memory Cards, is there another way for transfers like how the 360s did it with their transfer cables? Or you're just SOL?

ReverseCycology

Although I didn't know about it, dude above said there is another slot for a HDD on the Ps3? I'm not at home so I can't check.

As the system is out longer, dvelopers will make more effiecient games. It's true, if this continues, it could be an inconvience, however, It won't.

The PS2 memory card overtime held more and more due to increased effiecency.

SolidTy

I could see maybe if 3rd party devs were doing this but if the first party devs are, I can only see this being done more often.

I remember when alot of people were saying blu ray isn't needed for gaming, after this the argument is starting to seem correct, for at least this gen.

So, PS3 needs a new HDD now as a must buy to play all games with installing / uninstalling ?

That is, it just got even more expensive ???

SolidTy

Yeah, the PS3 is SOOOOOO much more than the WiFi-less, Xbox Live chargin', HD-DVD is dead M$ is still supportin', No HDD standard, RROD filled, Costly AA Battery usin' Controller, HDMI 1.2, Last Gen DVD are still cool, DRM rules, 360.

$50 dollars can get you a lot sometimes...and a Blu-Ray Player to boot!

BURN!

Can't you just use the usb port to add another hardrive? Or perhaps multiple hardrives?

Yes, to both. The PS3 has an extra slot for another HDD even.

I have a question about ps3 load times actually

can you erase the game from your harddrive but keep your save files? If you can't they should address that. It would be nice to be able to uninstall a game and still be able to play on your game

SolidTy

Yes, you can do that.

They are separate.

So, if you're low on space why not just uninstall games you're not playing at the moment. You can still play the game off the disc and keep all your game data

ps: yes, I did just drag some quotes from another thread into this one :P

Some of those games have mandatory installations, so I believe if you did remove the file, you would have to wait for it to install once again if you wanted to play it.

You can do that, but the Lemming's point is :

"That's not convenient!"

Therefore, this SW fuss.

Shift05

Some? What some?

There is ONLY ONE game that has MANDATORY, and that's DMC4. All other games are optional installs, and any game that isn't out yet is just needless speculation.

Hot Shots golf as well, and I believe a few others, but not as big as 5gb which DMC4 and Hot shots Golf take up.

It's not a problem...even if you have a 40GB, assuming you don't have much on it you can support 7 - 8 games if they go by the 5GB install. 60GB and 80GB don't really have to worry. Honestly, is it going to kill you if you have to uninstall or reinstall something?

I delete the demos i download on both the 360 and PS3 so no problems there. As for game installs...as long as they're optional on the PS3 i don't care if they take 5 gigs as DMC4 does. But, if it's 5gigs and it's mandatory, i won't be buying it. Too much wasted space.

I don't mind installs of 1-3gb at all. 5gb is pushing it though. Since DMC4 is the only mandatory game at this point it really is of no consequence to me since i didn't like the demo.

Its out in Japan I believe. There was another Thread about it.

Edit:

Here is the link http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/07/ps3-fanboy-hands-on-hot-shots-golf-out-of-bounds/

It says that it was confirmed that it was mandatory.

basically the smaller your hard drive the less convient it is, but you should be able to have as many game's installed as you want. You just have to uninstall and reinstall. Like I said, if you really hate this then get a bigger harddrive, but if you can handle those initial waits then maybe consider saving some money and getting a smaller hd. Of course, if you wanted to you could buy multiple harddrives and keep everything installed all the time.

Shift05

(Apparently?) Its out (Hot Shot's PS3) in Japan I believe. There was another Thread about it.

EDIT : Link

Well, until it's out here in the U.S. or U.K. territories, we don't know if they will change, add, and subtract anything. Many times the U.S. gets a "technically refined" version.

Either way, right now DMC4 is the only contender, and everyone is going loopy because of it.

------------------------------------------

EDIT : According to the link :

"We don't know if it will be in the final version of it..."

It's in the second paragraph. Goes with what I was saying above, many times they change things.

I do see though, this could be the start of an annoying trend.

SolidTy

So as long as it doesn't happen to you, but to another country it doesn't matter?

There have been many threads stating that blu ray is superior to DVD9, and that in the future the 360 will be gimped because of it. Now its the future and games have mandatory installations because of blu ray, while the DVD9 games do not.

Well put. That's the point i've been trying to make in these threads.

how are you going to be able to transfer your game saves, data, and files from your old HDD to your bigger HDD? ReverseCycology

The same way you would do it on a computer.

Is this a game?

Ask dumb questions?

They say the attach rate for the PS3 is 5 games. Imagine if those games need 5 gigs worth of installation. 5 x 5 = beyond what the 20 gig PS3s could handle. Installation time isn't much of a problem, the usage of HDD is. People might want to upgrade to a bigger hard drive, and I know a memory card might not hold up to 25 gigs worth of info. Hopefully there's a fast and easy way for migration.

actually oblivion had a mandatory 4.6 gig install so the load times could be drastically reduced, spiderman 3 had a 2.6 gb install to reduce load times as well, it's just that with these games you didnt notice the install take place as it happened very quickly, the optional installs i can think of are UT3 and NGS.

So with more and more games and also all the demos having optional to mandatory installations that would quickly used up all your PS3 HDD space, some might say one solution is get a bigger HDD. But here's the question, how are you going to be able to transfer your game saves, data, and files from your old HDD to your bigger HDD? I think this solution is just another problem.

ReverseCycology

I had a 20 gig PS3...than I got a 120gig HDD for it and used my iPod to transfer all my saved games. It was very easy to do!!

Warhawk takes 800MBs thats no where near 5gigs, Hotshot Golf I believe is true but ill need to see a link for UT3 to believe its 5gigs since you already lied about Warhawk.
