According to

this article, the Ps3 can work marvels.

"The PS3 rendition of Pandemic's The Saboteur is different though. It's special. It's trying something new that's never been seen before on console, or indeed PC, and its results are terrific. In a best-case scenario you get edge-smoothing that is beyond the effect of 16x multi-sampling anti-aliasing, effectively delivering an effect better than the capabilities of high-end GPUs without crippling performance. Compare and contrast with Xbox 360 hardware, which tops out at 4x MSAA."

This is either BS because if that was true, 1st party devs should be able to make games that outperform anything on Pc, or it is the truth, making people scream "what a shame!" due to the fact that no one has really showed what the Cell is really capable of in outperforming even high-end gaming rigs.

what's your take? I tend to believe that it's just the ability of great devs such as Naughty Dog and Santa Monica that are able to find the right compromises in order to make their titles look so good, still not good enough to beat out games like Crysis.

I admit that the ps3 is a great maching that can make wonderful games but it can't reach games on the pc that are on max and are beasts in graphics like Crysis.

Wasn't this a failure since it blurs the whole image slightly and you lose texture detail.

I'm sure someone posted a link of the beyond3D forum where they explained why the 360 GPU is stronger than the PS3's and how important the role of the Spu's is

So a new AA rendering technique makes the PS3 more powerful than a PC? Oh dear, they need to investigate the term 'power' a little more.

Granted the PS3 is able to blurrify the graphics to give the impression of decent AA at a huge loss in IQ but I thought this was old news?

This reminds me of N64's motion blur which was possible before the Voodoo 5 came out :P


Both weren't motion blur as we know it today, though.

Thats in a best case scenario Also modern GPU's do 32xAA nowdays Besides Ps3 can barelly play games at 720p while a mid-low end 8800gt like the one i own can play most games at 1080p ( playing race driver Grid now at 1440x900 at 60-70fps average with 16xAA with that card)

well as long as people believe it, I guess they will keep saying it. What it actually is though, is a fancy way of saying they came up with a new aa method for the ps3 since the traditional one doesnt work well on the hardware. The blur aa isnt exactly that great, I think I might prefer jaggies.

any current hardware could do it, but its only done on the ps3. Turning definition off on the pc version of gta iv does almost the same thing.

from what i have seen MLAA is measured up 16xAA under ideal circumstances...but there are compromises caused by the tech that make the image a bit blurry. 16XAA honest AA (for lack of a better term) seems to still be better in terms of image quality (but it does eat a lot more performance). PC can also go higher than that. on a side note i also heard that MLAA is being developed to be used on GPUs using the compute shader in DX11. i think crytek are using it as a horsepower saving option for people with lower end DX11 GPUs.

MLAA is only 16xAA anyways, it can't beat PC's 24xAA and 32xAA.

Did people actually click the link? Sony never said this and its not talking about a secret ps3 power. Its just an alternate way to do AA and has been posted on these forums before many times. I believe GOW used it too and it looks great! But if you want to continue looking foolish keep talking about the cell *Shrug*

The Saboteur or what ever doesn't really use the real technique....for sure God Of War 3 does..and it is a sight to be hold...

upcoming games that will also use it are...

UnderSiege, RTS game that will have MLAA at 720p or 1080p no AA

LittleBigPlanet 2 will have MLAA

and mini games from the Move game "Start The Party" uses MLAA

I'm sure Killzone 3, Starhawk, Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, and maybe MLB The Show will use it as well.

the good thing about this technique is that it frees up other resourses....so kinda gives you extra processing for other effects in the game being developed

I would never use 16xAA or its too much of a hit on graphics cards for my liking, plus imo its not needed. Most the most part I'm fine with 8xMSAA or 8xCSAA.

You can do MLAA on PC CPU, if you don't mind using a few spare cores. In fact it was originally developed by Intel for CPU's. It just happens to be something the SPU's are really good at, and GPU's aren't.

On a still image MLAA looks way better than 4xMSAA. In motion though MSAA does a better job of removing crawling edges, and handling really thin geometry (wires).

I dunno about you but I play my games in motion. So yea, MSAA is definitely the better man here.

Well the only game I have played that uses MLAA is God of War 3 and that game looks amazing. I usually dont use much AA in my games 4X-8XAA for me, I dont really notice much jaggies at 1080p.

Not this crap again, i dont feel like explaining how many flaws and limitations MLAA has again, so just leave it as: No. Also metro 2033's Analytical Anti-aliasing is extremely similar to MLAA and accomplishes about same yet you dont see anyone saying that it is some almighty anit aliasing solution.

Well, PCs can do up to 96xAA (4 way 4xx SLI) which is more than 10 times what we usually need.

Not nessesary is BS because he is actually talking about 16X Multi-sampling which alone will not make a PS3 output better graphics than PC games,it will just has a great AA system without the penalty it would had on PC,graphics on PC are not AA alone fillrate is much much lower on the PS3 compare to a PC,and many other effects as well.
