I know some guys who just buys one 1 or 2 game and that's it for them. Well that was back in the PS2 era :D Now I know 3 people in person who has a PS3. One has about 15 games, other has about 7 and the thir around 25. I myself have close to 40 games as of today.
So I'm not really sure how this attach rate works.....
I haven't bought a single PS3 game yet; I rent.
Very few games are out there that are worth my money.
In january 2007 Microsoft claimed they had an attach of 5.3 per console now after the ps3's first year it has an attach rate of 5.2 per console so I dont know why lems are so proud of the attach when the PS3 is on the same path the 360 went when it comes to number of games sold per console. I can only see it increasing in 2008 for the PS3 with its biggest most recognised titles comingCossackNoodle
except that now the 360´s atach rate is 7 games per console

Linky or it didn't happen. I reckon it's still around 2 ... and lol @ Nathandrake.
does that include bluray movies aswell? :|marklarmer
If you are asking me than the answer is no! :) I have 53 Blu-ray movies and close to 40 PS3 games.
I thought 360's attach rate was closer to the low 7's? while PS3's was somewhere in the mid 2's?
Can you provide a link?

I guess you also have a private jet :PNot that I don't believe ever random person on the Internet...care to link to a reputable source?
And lol@ NathanDrake...What 40 games were worth owning? I could see a dozen or so if you were that into it, but 40?
I own 1 PS3 game, and I use GameFly for the rest.

It's not 40. It's close to it! I like all my games. And I do enjoy them a lot. But you can check them out if you go to my collection.

Ok, some of those are really great games, but I still don't think I could, for my own use, justify buying them. More power to you though. I will stick to renting games and collecting Blu-Rays :D

Yea I know!! But I just don't like to rent. I'm afraid that those discks may mess up my PS3. Sometimes they are really messed up. I only put new games in my system. No used ones.
And also I like to collect. :) Just need more $$$$$
I only have 4 ps3 games but I have owned 11
I buy new then trade them in I can't afford to KEEP them all. But that would still make 11 games per my 1 console
You have no proof, this thread fails, you fail.
And you know whats even more sad than PS3s having low attachment rates, is that Sony just releases games and doesn't support it with DLC like new missions and such, a hand full of games like Ratchet, Heavenly Sword, Lair, etc. are most likely collecting dust.

So basically one extra year of 360 ownership results in 2 extra game purchases on average? Who cares.
Frankly, I've argued this point many times in the past for 360 threads. and I will argue it now in a PS3 thread. Too much weight is put on attach rates considering they have zero context behind them. Attach rates are mostly meaningless until somebody bother breaking them down into stats that developers and industry can actually use.
For now it is an average of games sold divided by consoles sold. Big deal. You get a couple rich people buying ever game while the average consumer buy 1 and you have a skewed average. Granted its better than nothing, but too many people act as if attach rates, without proper context, is all developers care about and rules decisions on which console they will support. If that is true than most development companies are dumber than I could have expected.

If his thread fails for having no link, your post fails for assuming the PS3 has a low attchment rate with no link provided yourself...secondly how would Ratchet, HS, Lair utilize DLC? They are single player experience that dont need DLC, before DLC was even avalible to console users all the devs would have to do is implement mini games and other little things to add more value, it would be a bad use of DLC if devs where to use it that way....charging 5 bucks for a couple of mini games might sound fine for you but it would be unutter rip off in my eyes.

LOL..yes because games never had replability before DLC. Folklore, Resistance, Genji, Motorstorm and other Sony games have plenty of DLC, but that doesnt necessarily add as much replability as you think. If you have ever played Rachet and HS you would know it has plenty of replability built in the game with great rewards for completing missiong in HS, and new armour and upgrades for your weapons in Rachet and Clank the second time around.
DLC is not a way to build replability, its a way for developers to get extra cash.
Also if you look at the link above you Gamestop claims that the PS3s attach rate is close to 5 and the 360s is close to 9. That is far from a poor software attach rate. Especially since the 360s has one years more worth of games it makes sense for it to be bigger.

This threads comes on the heels of the PS3 sales thread and is based on Sony releasing their quarterly numbers. they announced 10.5 million PS3s sold (to retailers) and over 50 million PS3 games sold. Do the math and that equals 5.2 attach rate.
I'll leave it to you to go to that threads and figure it out for yourself (first post of first page). Although I won't hold my breath.

Exactly what games are selling is the more important info than these attach rates dont answer. Just because a console has a high attach rate doesnt mean a dev who makes JRPGs will sell his game well on a system whos high attach rate is buit off of FPS, Racers and sports games...(an example not generalizing 360s relax).

The topic is PS3 has the same attach as 360 and it doesn't so it fails.
Consoles software attach rate
Secondly, Mass Effect is single player but its going to having DLC which adds to the replay value. Sony charging you $60 bucks for a game without supporting it with DLC like extra missions is more of a rip-off than $5 bucks that adds more replay value.

Same with me. Been gaming to long to waste my money like that. And don't get it twisted, fakeboys. I wouldn't buy Bioshock or most 360 games either. Give me a Gears, a Resistance, a Warhawk, something with a long life, and you have my money.

You are right! I don't know what the attach ratios are and I never said I do. It just sounded funny the way you worded the sentence. That's all! But also...the 360 has 7 not 8! Wich is good!
360 = King of software sales
Wii = King of hardware sales
PS3 = King of blu ray movie sales = Jester of consoles
You are right! I don't know what the attach ratios are and I never said I do. It just sounded funny the way you worded the sentence. That's all! But also...the 360 has 7 not 8! Wich is good!
NathanDrake
On the one hand it's very impressive, but you have to take into account the slow sales of the 360.
It's not hard for the attach rate to go up if no-one's buying the console, likewise the Wii's attach rate has to get lower because it sell so well

True! But you have to know that most people who got the Wii are perfectly happy with WiiSports till this day. That's why the Wii doesn't move software like it should. It has same hardcore fanbase but it's larger userbase is people who don't give a damn about video games in general. Maybe getting one or two games a year and they are perfectly happy. These people got the Wii because it's new and different. So I think that's the major reason why the Wii doesn't move software as much as it should. Because if you look at it. 20+ million consoles sold. That's more than what the 360 has by 5+ million. It would be logical to guess that more software is sold on the Wii...but it's not. And the reason is casual gamers who are statisfied with WiiSports, WiiPlay and WiiFit.

You should read the entire thread. The 360 attach rate was 5.1 at the end of its first 14 months, which is what I think the OP was getting at. The Wii and PS3 have slightly lower attach rates, but nothing dramatic at the same point in their lifetimes (4.64 Wii and 4.26 PS3). The Wii actually sold 11 million more units of software (7 million if you take out Wii play) than the 360 in the first 14 months of their lifetimes.

My point exactly. People act like all developers look only at who has the highest attach rate and then automatically makes games for them. But if that attach rate is made up mainly of FPS and racers, while other titles hardly sell at all...then a high attach rate means nothing to developers of those other games.
Personally, I would love it for some analyst or company to break these attach rate numbers down into genres and what those genres make up of the total game library. I would be very interested to see those breakdowns and I think the industry would as well.

NathanDrake
that's a good point. The Wii has faddish properties in that there are less incentives to buy more games given the pack in
but at the same time the attachreation is higher than the Ps3's so i wouldn't say anything's decided yet

link and maybe your argument is valid
People on this thread have gotten way off on topic. The TC wasn't comparing ps3's attach rate to 360's current attach rate he was comparing both consoles attach rate in their first year which both had an attach rate of about 5 in their first year link.
