buuuuut Sony needs to dothe following things before it happens.
- Keep lowering the price even if its once every year, especially around Christmas: The competition will drop prices keeping the PS3 in the position as the most expensive of the bunch. Also who has ever seen a $100 price drop, more like $50 and thats it.
- Have lots of fantastic games throughout its lifespan. Also get more 3rd party exclusive which I'm sure they can becuse Sony has a good relationship with 3rd party companies: Contrary to popular belief the "next-gen" war started Nov 2005! more than likely this generation will end during the holiday season 2010 or 2011. If Sony is just getting up to speed in early/late 08', the competition is getting ready for the next gen of systems preparing to leave Sony in the dust once again. Also, Sony does not have a good relationship with 3rd parties, Sony's money (sales, userbase, incentives) are what kept the attention of third parties...this gen they are without those characteristics.
- Bring out a new slimmer model just like the PS1&2 had, but not too soon, in 3-4 years time. This will help sales in Japan because they love everything in a small form: See original statement, Sony is running out of time this gen. To provide a slimline version of their system Sony needs to earn a profit first (similar to the PS1/PS2)!
- Make more 1st/2nd party titles, I have heard Sony are planning 100 of these throughout PS3's lifespan: This is where Sony should have been focusing its bread and butter games all along. Over the years they got comfortable with third patry games being the highlight of their system while they take all the time in the world to push out a GT or GoW title. Now their first party games arent strong enough to carry the console through the tough times and its hurting them.
- Improve PSN and get out more content as well as have more titles online enabled: This should have been in motion when XBL was still on the Xbox 1. MS didnt create its greatness overnight (and they are a software company), how did Sony expect to have a rival solution to a network that took years to implement versus the few months work Sony put in?!?!?
This is really all Sony needs to do to beat the 360, Playstation is a powerful brand and if Sony does the above they are almost guaranteed to beat the 360. I can't say the same thing about the Wii because Nintendo is an even more powerful brand.
Rest assured the above bulletpoints are a certainty, the first 6 months say nothing about a how a console turns out at the end of the gen, which will be in 5-6 years time.
While your comments are well thought out and logical, Im afraid its really too late for Sony. They dig themselves a hole so deep that only a miracle (i.e. Ninty or MS suddenly leaving the console business) would put them back on top. In the face of strong competition, you are allowed very little mistakes. Unfortunately, Sony has broken the record of most mistakes made to end a legacy this gen...
