I'll keep this analogy brief.

XBOX launches in 2001 with nothing but Halo, and PS2 pretty much owned it in every single way. 4 years later Xbox Controller S, xbl, Halo 2, better multiplats, GTA series becoming multiplatform leaving the PS2 to shame. There was no point in owning a ps2 over a Xbox after '05. Sure it had a slim line and GOW2 coming soon, but it still wasn't any match for the xbox.

PS3 launches in 2006 with a steep price point and a crap library, and 360 pretty much owned it in every single way. 4 years later ps3 has the better lineup, Mass Effect goes multiplat, online although not on par with xbl is free and is very tolerable leaving the 360 to shame. Now there is no point in owning a 360 over a ps3 as of 2010. Sure the slim 360 has a lower failure rate and GeOW3 is coming soon, but it's still no match for the ps3.

Other similarities include the size of the ps3 was huge at launch just like the xbox. PS3 has the smaller library compared to the 360 just like the xbox had the smaller library comaperd to the ps2. PS3 launched with larger hdd just like the xbox did last gen. Aside from the wii the 360 is the household name for consoles just like the ps2 was last gen, whereas the ps3 is less desirable to causal gamers just like the xbox was last gen.

I agree for the most part but 1) PS3 is better than Xbox ever was 2) ME was always a multiplat 3) PS3 had brand recognition 4) Sony has great 1st party, so even with no good launch games, we KNEW great ones were coming, unlike with Xbox.

Whilst I'll agree with the premise, you have it a bit wrong concerning the XBOX launch games as I pretty much consider it the best launch ever especially for MS's first try in the VG market. :P

Halo CE

Project Gotham Racing

Dead or Alive 3

Ghost Recon

Amped

Fusion Frenzy.

A few problems with your stretch of a comparison.

1) The original Xbox lost billions and was dropped before ever seeing a dime of profit. The PS3 is now making a profit.

2) MS didn't let the Xbox die a natural death. They actually killed it when it wasarguably at its peak. They didn't want to risk people NOT jumping to the 360 so they cut off support for XBox to push people to the 360. Sony did not do anything like this.

3) The PS3 did not have a crap launch library. It had games like Uncharted and Heavenly Sword which, although a bomb financially, was an amazing game and one of my top gaming experiences this gen.

4) The PS3 IS huge, but they were the first to offer slim consoles. Even the PS3 went slim before the 360. I would also point out that the 360 is pretty much just as bigas the Xbox, it just sucks in in the center instead of bulging out like the Xbox did.

5) The original Xbox didn't sell at all outside of NA. The PS3, while being outsold by the 360 in NA, is selling very well in other regions.Meanwhile, the 360 still relies on the NA market for roughly half its total sales.

6) The Xbox never had any hope of catching up to the PS2 but the PS3 is constantly nipping at the heels of the 360.

I would also argue the loss of multiplats last gen was because Sony was too far ahead to care. This gen is a completely different story. Games cost way too much to make to be exlusive on a console that only has a 30 - 40 million user base. Therefore, there is practically ZERO motivation for any company to remain exclusive to the 360 or PS3 for more than a few months.

Honestly I like the Xbox lineup over what the PS3 has had so far.

  • Halo CE
  • Halo 2
  • Fable The Lost Chapters
  • Metal Gear Solid 2
  • Knights of The Old Republic
  • KOTOR2
  • Jade Empire
  • Far Cry Instincts
  • Morrowind
  • Forza

I like what the PS3 has but the Xbox is one of my favorite consoles. Great mix of shooters, RPG's and some good racing games.

Not exactly. Xbox was actually more powerfull than it´s competition, every game (exclusive and multiplat) looked and performed better on it and was a easy to develop for console.

3rd place in sales yet (arguably) has this gen's best games lineup. If anything, PS3 is this gen's Gamecube.

Your analogy makes no sense. The Xbox sold a total of 25 million and never really gained steam in its lifetime following Halo 2, while the PS2 sold 144 million and snatched up exclusives from 3rd party developers even when the Xbox's install base was large enough in the U.S. and the U.K. Microsoft pretty much released the Xbox then went onto the 360 while Sony was still focused on the PS2.

The PS3 and 360 are neck and neck in sales, with the 360 selling more systems due to heavy advertising and the fact that it is being sold at a lower price point.

CORRECTION: this gen's Nintendo 64...and the sales are not that far off from each other (aside from the Wii and DS) so being 3rd place this gen is not really much of a bad thing. The Nintendo 64 should've sold much more than it did considering its excellent first party library.

There was contract disputes or something similar with the company making the GPU for the system, if I recall correctly.

Well, it did have Halo, Panzer Dragoon Orta, Ninja Gaiden, Oddworld, Mech Assault, and JSRF among others.

It also had some pretty awesome racing games like Project Gotham Racing, and Forza.

And if you didn't have a PC you got to play Morrowind, KotoR, Half Life 2, Doom 3, etc.

I thought it was quite an awesome system.

They're all in quite different situations compared to last gen. It's a much more competitive situation in terms of sales and games. Last gen, PS2 left the other two (or three if you include dreamcast) so far behind in both, that there was hardly even a competition. I mean, going by the numbers. People can have their personal preferences of course.

PS3 is doing better than that. The gap from them and 2nd place isn't that far off.

You'll see though, this year PS3 will own big time... and it already had a kick ass start

pft , xbox couldnt match ps2s sales, and line up and barely edged out the nintendo gamecube for crying out loud so ya ok sir

what ever makes you sleep at night in my opinion gamecube deserved every single sale it got and xbox well that only last cause of one game-halo !

in fact,

nintendo still sold more units then ms did last gen -gb and gc combined,

also thier n64 sold more then xbox 1 did in its life time-33 m vs 26 m /25 mill-gc

so keep saying xbox was and is better then ps2 --- fact is, n64 and gc have more exclusives that are rememberable,

and old time favorites

and have one of the very few 10 ,0 rated games on this site, in fact nintendo has 2 both exclusive 10,0 titles on here-galaxy 2 and zelda oot ps3 has 1 exclusive-mgs iv and 1 shared-gta iv

Even though I don't like the 360 it is far better then the Wii. You could base that just on Multiplats. Something the Wii doesn't have.

I thought so too.

I didn't have my own gaming PC back then (though I did have a PC that could play Half Life), and as far as I'm concerned the Xbox was a nice substitute for those without a PC, and the Xbox is still the best console for that purpose imo.

CB4McGusto

Stopped reading right there.

[QUOTE="Arach666"]Honestly,if we go strictly by both console libraries and exclude the PC(something I never do),the xbox had a far,far better library than the PS2 to me,and as of now still better than the PS3.Raymundo_Manuel

I thought so too.

I didn't have my own gaming PC back then (though I did have a PC that could play Half Life), and as far as I'm concerned the Xbox was a nice substitute for those without a PC, and the Xbox is still the best console for that purpose imo.

Wait what?? You 2 have some explaining to do... :|

i think you're right. although, i'm no expert, but i think the ps3 is actually selling alright. don't think the xbox ever did that well.
