I'll keep this analogy brief.
XBOX launches in 2001 with nothing but Halo, and PS2 pretty much owned it in every single way. 4 years later Xbox Controller S, xbl, Halo 2, better multiplats, GTA series becoming multiplatform leaving the PS2 to shame. There was no point in owning a ps2 over a Xbox after '05. Sure it had a slim line and GOW2 coming soon, but it still wasn't any match for the xbox.
PS3 launches in 2006 with a steep price point and a crap library, and 360 pretty much owned it in every single way. 4 years later ps3 has the better lineup, Mass Effect goes multiplat, online although not on par with xbl is free and is very tolerable leaving the 360 to shame. Now there is no point in owning a 360 over a ps3 as of 2010. Sure the slim 360 has a lower failure rate and GeOW3 is coming soon, but it's still no match for the ps3.
Other similarities include the size of the ps3 was huge at launch just like the xbox. PS3 has the smaller library compared to the 360 just like the xbox had the smaller library comaperd to the ps2. PS3 launched with larger hdd just like the xbox did last gen. Aside from the wii the 360 is the household name for consoles just like the ps2 was last gen, whereas the ps3 is less desirable to causal gamers just like the xbox was last gen.

A few problems with your stretch of a comparison.
1) The original Xbox lost billions and was dropped before ever seeing a dime of profit. The PS3 is now making a profit.
2) MS didn't let the Xbox die a natural death. They actually killed it when it wasarguably at its peak. They didn't want to risk people NOT jumping to the 360 so they cut off support for XBox to push people to the 360. Sony did not do anything like this.
3) The PS3 did not have a crap launch library. It had games like Uncharted and Heavenly Sword which, although a bomb financially, was an amazing game and one of my top gaming experiences this gen.
4) The PS3 IS huge, but they were the first to offer slim consoles. Even the PS3 went slim before the 360. I would also point out that the 360 is pretty much just as bigas the Xbox, it just sucks in in the center instead of bulging out like the Xbox did.
5) The original Xbox didn't sell at all outside of NA. The PS3, while being outsold by the 360 in NA, is selling very well in other regions.Meanwhile, the 360 still relies on the NA market for roughly half its total sales.
6) The Xbox never had any hope of catching up to the PS2 but the PS3 is constantly nipping at the heels of the 360.
I would also argue the loss of multiplats last gen was because Sony was too far ahead to care. This gen is a completely different story. Games cost way too much to make to be exlusive on a console that only has a 30 - 40 million user base. Therefore, there is practically ZERO motivation for any company to remain exclusive to the 360 or PS3 for more than a few months.
