many fanboy say 'with the ps3 u get a blu ray player and its half the price'. that isnt true no more because the Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray player now less than a PS3. $100 less. No longer can ps3 fanboys say 'ps3 is cheapest blu ray player' because that isnt true

Yeah, but if you wanted a Blu-ray player and a games console of sorts, the PS3 is still a bargain. Otherwise it's $500 (player) + another $400, or $500 + another $250, when it could just be a neat $600.

Exactly its an all in one.  People who have NO interest in video games wouldnt buy a PS3 just for the Blu ray player.  They would just wait for stand alones to get cheaper. Its just a justification for its price and its purchase.  Its still the best bargin for HD gaming and HD movies and as the prices of the blu ray player gets cheaper you will see the PS3 prices get cheaper as well.  Blu ray parts are not as expensive to make and that will reduce the cost of manufacturing of the PS3.

LOL..thats a huge exclusion.  The point of HD players is to sell HD MOVIES, and even though HD DVD players are selling more because of its lack as a standard feature, its sellin far less movies then blu ray and still has less studio support meaning less movie releases to HD DVD.  HD DVD players can sell like hotcakes but if they cant outsell blu ray movies, the format will lose the little studio support it has and will go extinct seeing as movie studios only care about their movie selling not if Toshiba is selling their players.

this is flawed.

why are there more hd dvd movies coming out than bluray?  many, many of the hd dvd titles are simply older titles remastered, which is a good move for the consumers who are old enough to buy one of the players....

the "support" the bluray fans like to tout is mostly in word alone... for example: fan like to boast Disney is backing bluray, yet out of the many, many Disney-branded titles, there are none of them for sale on bluray.... only Buena Vista... but that name isn't the boasting point....

if the hd dvd players sell like hotcakes, bluray will lose. It's just that simple.  and why? the laws of saturation....

it's better to have more players sold than more movies sold at this point...;)

back OT:  yes, this is a crushing blow to sony's "budget br player" marketting angle....

Buena Vista and Disney are one and the same and as for Disney support....

It clearly says Disney for everyone to recognize and its their biggest hit and this is not the only example of their blu ray support.  They are all exclusive to blu ray.  As for more HD DVD movie releases, I highly doubt HD DVD will have more movie releases since it has less support.  It might have more ANNOUNCED releases at this point but thats because Universal is dumping most of its old movies on HD DVD and announced its releases early.  That doesnt mean their wont be more blu ray movies as studios announce the movie releases closer to their date.  Announced and released are two different scenerios.

Yes, HD-DVD players are outselling Blu-ray players if you don't include the best selling Blu-Ray player in the count.

Www.digitalbits.com pretty much put HD DVD in its place.

Having ONE major studio give exclusive support is insane. Universal is so desperate they are flooding HD DVD with old titles that everyone already owns on DVD.

Blu-ray is the winner anyone with any sense can see that.

Not exactly. I'm still holding out hope that neither format will win. There are other formats out there, superior to both Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. And they're cheaper.

People always say it's the games that matter.  In this case it's the movies that matter.

Format Supporters

Blu-Ray and HD-DVD

Paramount

Warner Bros.

Blu-Ray

Disney (Buena Vista)

Fox

Lionsgate

MGM

Sony Pictures

HD-DVD

Universal Studios

The only way HD-DVD is competing right now is price. Once Blu-Ray hits the same price point as HD-DVD, I don't know how HD-DVD is going to survive.  On a side note, one plus for me is that Blu-Ray disks do not scratch as easily as DVD's or HD-DVD's thanks to Blu-Ray's superior hard coating.

Yup just do the math. Does anyone want to miss out on all those movies? Do they even realize how many movies Fox and Disney own? And thats just two of the 5 major exclusive studio support blu ray is getting.  Just look at the biggest films of the year and which studios they belong too.

Oh and Pirates 3 was fine, sure it had typical third film syndrome but it was a good ending to a pretty crazy franchise. Didn't care for the calypso stuff but over all Barbossa and Jack were great.

Because movie stuidos care more about their movies selling then if Toshiba can sell their player.  Again HD DVD players only outsell Blu ray stand alone players, PS3s are very commonly used as blu ray players, are bought in greater numbers then HD DVD stand alone players and this is shown by the sales jump of blu ray after the release of the PS3 in both N.A. and Europe.  If movie studios arent selling their movies on a particular format as much as they are on another format you can bet they will just go where they can sell their movies and as movie studios drop support of the HD DVD format, the player wont sell with no movies.

i'm sorry, but that logic is putting the cart before the horse.

i'll just agree to disagree and we'll watch the outcome..

at this point studios care MOST about minimizing costs while maximizing profits.  hd dvd has a better business model.

exclusive support, as with the gaming industry, is fluid most of the time.

once hd dvd hit the critical $199 price point, the movies sales will continue to outpace those of br movies as there are more players on the market.

And yet the current sales charts prove this wrong with every month that goes by. Blu ray disc sales are higher but more importantly they are steady. HD DVD sells okay the first week and then they fall. If the movies don't sell, all the players in the world don't make a difference. Plus its only Toshiba thats pricing it so low, making the HD DVD player an unattractive proposition for other hardware makers.

Really go to digitalbits and read up.

That low price crap might work with the Wii but trust me it doesn't work with everything else.

1. the $199 price oint is not "low price crap". it's a historic fact.

2. the ps3 is helping br sales. that's the good news. the bad news for every br movie sold to be used on a ps3, that's $30 less that could have gone to a ps3 game. sony enjoys much higher money on games than movies.

3. "if the movies don't sell at all"..? um... you can leave a movie in the library indefinately.  just because someone doesn't buy Caddyshack today, doesn't mean they won't in a year when the players are more reasonable in price.

focus on the current movie sales if you want, but you'd be feeling different if the xbox360 was selling less than the ps3 but sold more games for it.  you'd call the 360 a loser, even tho they're selling more titles.

Both the Matrix and 2 Pirates films were released on May 22nd.   The 2 Pirates films sold 47,000 units while the Matrix sold 13,900.

Take from it what you will.

[QUOTE="LosDaddie"]Yeah, my PS3 is just a $600 blu-ray player at this moment. I haven't playing any PS3 games for at least a month.Bread_or_Decide

And thanks to the update its also my official DVD player too. Upscaled DVD's for the old and Blu ray for the new. Any movie lovers dream.

Yup, and if not for blu-ray, my PS3 wouldn't have been turned on for over a month.

If you divided the Pirates sales in half you still end up with 23,000 to 13,900. In addition, the comparison comparing The Matrix and the 2 Pirates movies has been made on many reputable sources the past few days. I can happily provide links if you desire.

You guys don't get it. How many signs at Best Buy or Walmart or Circuit city say that BR has x number of exclusive studios or HD-DVD has x number of exclusive studios. Right, none. What people see is a really pretty picture next to a big price tag regardless of format. The first company to get that price tag south of $200 will win, because by then they are charging pretty close to the price of a quality DVD player, or at least close enough to justify spending the extra coin.

http://www.digitalbits.com/ pretty much put HD DVD in its place.

Having ONE major studio give exclusive support is insane. Universal is so desperate they are flooding HD DVD with old titles that everyone already owns on DVD.

Blu-ray is the winner anyone with any sense can see that.

Bread_or_Decide
Not to mention that I can now upscale those "old titles" with my PS3. So thats just even less incentive to buy HD format disks...yes, I know I know. Upscaled HD is not as good as native HD. But why would I want to spend 15, 20 or more (I dont know the actual prices right now) on movies that I already have that can just simply be upscaled to almost match HD-DVD or Bluray quality. Well, maybe not "almost" but hey, its free. So, PS3 is a gaming console first, then a bluray player (that now upscales DVDs) and has other media functions that I wont go into. Games + Bluray + upscales DVDs + other media functions. Justifies $600 for me.

Wrong, what people see is what movies are availble in what format and when they find out most of their fav. movies are on Blu ray and exclusive because of whatever reason they will wait to invest in the HD player that satisfies them.

You buy a media player to play movies.  Blu ray has more variety and more movies.  It doesnt matter if HD DVD players are 20 dollars if they dont have the movies I wanna buy I am not gonna settle for smokin aces over 007, Pirates, Spiderman and many others.  Having more movies makes it more likly that they will appeal to the audience while HD DVD only appeals to people who care for some fox movies, but mostly love Universal.

Thats great news, if blue players are cheaper that means the cost of production is lower.. so i guess we might hear a ps3 price drop soon! arabi_89
Or it gives sony a chance to improve their profit margin on the PS3. They are already taking a loss per unit. Lowering production costs reduces that loss.

But there is nothing there to tell them that some movies are exclusive to BR and some are exclusive to HD-DVD, at least nothing obvious. Other than that stupid 3 minute pirates commercial and some "only on HD-DVD/BR" tags on the movies its hard to know what movies are exclusive. You're thinking way to highly of the average consumer and that they'll actually do some research instead of impulse buy, which is why the price matter so much. I mean I couldn't tell you what studio makes what movie and I'm a pretty big movie fan, I just don't give a rats ass what studio makes it. You think some average joe is going to go and spend 3 hours deciding the pros and cons of each system?

many fanboy say 'with the ps3 u get a blu ray player and its half the price'. that isnt true no more because the Sony's BDP-S300 Blu-ray player now less than a PS3. $100 less. No longer can ps3 fanboys say 'ps3 is cheapest blu ray player' because that isnt true

Most consumers actually do research especially this early on in the life of a product when its more expensive then whats currently on the market. I spent months looking up info on HDTVs before getting one. I also looked at both Bluray and HD DVD (I could have easily gotten the HD DVD player for 200 for my 360 but the cheap price couldn't outweight all the cons of support, and no upscaling.) By the time the product is mainstreamed it will be the early adopters that push the market in the direction its headed.

I don't believe your a big movie fan if you don't know which studios are behind which films. Heck do you know the names of writers, directors, or producers? If you don't then your not a big movie fan. Not the kind of fan who would pay a premium to watch films.

OK but the new argument now is for only 100 bucks more you can get a ps3 so you fail.
