In a recent interview conducted by our very own James Pinnell, with development studio 'Krome Studios', an interesting tidbit came out…

Apparently their engine has gotten to a stage where it's no longer harder to develop a PS3 game than a 360 game.

From a technology perspective, where the engine (Mercury) is right now, I don't think you can say one costs more to develop then other from a purely technological perspective. I think really it just comes down to the publisher.

Read the entire interview here

Which makes for a nice change compared to the usual "PS3 is too hard to develop for" rhetoric. Perhaps this is the beginning of a new stage in the PS3's lifecycle?

Well most devs are experienced with PS3 development so difficulty is no longer an issue for most.

Great if true. Maybe we will start to see higher quality work coming from third party developers....

The Ps3's been out for a while, and most devs who have made at least one game for the PS3 have overcome, to a certain extent, the initial difficulties faced when developing an engine from scratch on the PS3 platform. Too bad too many multiplatform games are based off the Unreal Engine 3.0 or other PC engines, in which the 360 port is a simple matter of console optimization.

It depends on the developer. Some may have figured out how to use floating point code for EVERYTHING, but alot haven't. On top of that, developers have to pick out what stays in the SPU cache. This is definitely an advantage, but it still takes more time. There is also the issue of trying to keep the optimal amount of each shader type on screen (impossible btw) in order to minimize the number of unused pipelines in the RSX. This fact alone will make the PS3 difficult to develop for forever....

If this came from one of the bigger studios, it might hold more weight, but as is, it is a relatively small developer making a claim about a specific engine they use. Doesn't mean much for the industry as a whole.

its not just that, but some of the best tools the industry has to offer, are now available, when at launch devs had basically nothing to work with. Sony lets 3rd party use their EDGE tools (Uncharted 1 & 2, Killzone 2, and GOW 3 use these), although its a toned down version. They also have sonys PHYRE engine. When PS3 was launched, sony basically gave devs a box of computer parts and told them "Do something with it". Now, they have all of these tools at their disposal.

Theres never going to be a time when magically the ps3 is no longer hard to develop for for everyone. Developers have trouble on a case by case basis. Some devs have probably thought its been easy since launch, some still think its too hard.

They haven't changed the SDK or updated the Language used for the PS3 so it doesn't go from being hard to easy. It's still hard to develop for it; it's just people are better at it now. Hell, driving a Formula 1 car is hard, but not as much for a Formula 1 driver doesn't mean it's suddenly become easy.

It depends on whos coding. The PS3 is and always will be harder to code for than the 360 mainly because the CPU architecture on the PS3 is a mess. The 360 is based off of a PC system which is the most programmer friendly. Im not saying the ps3 is a bad system. it certainly has a few thing under its sleeve that others do not have, but either way there is no denying the fact that it is harder to code for.

This is the order of systems easiest to develop for. (Left is easiest & right is hardest)

PC>360>Wii>PS3

These devs have had a long time to work on the PS3. This still doesnt make a difference in terms of difficulty. The people who had this engine made had a very hard time desiging it. Now anyone can buy their engine & do not have to spend time remaking one from scratch because they already have one made for them already. This in a sense makes it "easier".

It could be the engines are hard to develop, and with the stream of high quality PS3 engines, it may be easier.

Wait. So one developer come out and say it's eaiser because they developed an engine to run on it and that changes everything for everybody?

Really? That's ridiculous.

You guys really try too damn hard.

Actually, I think he just doesn't like the PS3 because for Valve, the money put into the development and optimization wouldn't be worth it.

Keep in mind that Valve has some of the best devs, I mean just look at HL2, it scales all the way back to DX6, and it can run on anything.

exactly. a small independant developer whos main focus is the pc of course its not finacially worth it to take the the time and money to develop for a console when their audience is on the pc.

all that has to be said is this.

Who's khrome studio? i've never even heard of them so why is their opinion the gospel truth?
AS for that they said THEIR engine, which likely means they've built it from the ground up and for quite a while too for the ps3 in mind....come back when an actual known studio says this.

In a UE3 monopolized market and big engines like CryEngine 3 and Tech 5 on the way; you need some sort of USP to make yourself stand out. My guess is this is their attempt to get themselves heard, whether it is true has yet to be proven.

Not that it matters, looking at CryEngine 3 cross platform development tools; I doubt a developer like this could do better.
