Hey, I am just wondering if PS3 online is cool. I heard it isn't as good as Xbox live, but is it still fun. Is a PS3 NOT WORTH getting if I am really into online play? Also, can you talk/chat through PS3 online?
-Thanks

Thanks for the information. Do you mean there is no private chat with PS3, or not talking between players at all?
-Thanks
X-Box Live is infinitely better than PSN. Yeah, you have to pay for it, but there is no better alternative for online console gaming. Anyone who says otherwise either hasn't tried XBL or is a blatant fanboy.creeping-deth87
I say otherwise.. how is it infinitely better in terms of online play?

Let's just say I tried SOCOM, and I gotta say, if that's an online-only multiplayer game, I don't think I'll ever touch a ps3 game that tries to do single and multi player. PSN is a laggy mess.

u do know that the reason socom got a low score was because of crap servers?
also you can talk to ppl in game and u can private chat and have a video conversation. but you cant do the private chat or cideo conv while in game. u can still send text messages in game tho.

lol, so you are basing the entire PSN quality over one game which is known for having crappys servers? Well I played GUN for X360 and that proves that X360 cant do graphics better than PS2 :?
All it's really lacking at this point is in game voice chat and mandatory Trophies. Which are both coming at some point. It may be a little fragmented but there's also a couple of things it does better than Live.Floppy_Jim
I actually like how not too many people use mics. It means less random convos. I hate when playing a game and then sumone starts talking about how he went on a date with this hotty like any of us care. Or when 2 friends join a game and they use the game as their personal telephone call and discuss their weekend plans. Sure u can mute it, but i just like it when i dont have to :P
Haha, but can you chat in game with all players live Live?

Don't listen to the fanboys here. You get the exact same features as Xbox Live, but for free. The only thing that's missing is private chat (talking to a friend 1 on 1 while in a game) you can still talk to people in game, just not privately with them.

Indeed that gets annoying. Especially when there are "rooms"/squads which you can enter/join to have just chat with that person and they use the main channel instead.

I'm sorry but that's a very poor rebuttal. Gun never tried to be a graphical powerhouse. SOCOM certainly tried to be a great online multiplayer game, and it failed completely. I'm not talking about its flop status on System Wars, I'm saying that based solely on my time with it.

Yes. PSN is great for a free service. It's basically like gaming on PC.
No it's not. :?

No Socom may need a bit more tweaking for its servers which by the way are basically running smooth now. But NOT one review ever stated it had bad gameplay, infact most made the case that the gameplay was there and definitly fun.
And from my addiction to it I can tell you that its gameplay is awesome. Right along with its community, competitiveness, and the sheer magic that takes place from losing to winning just because of good communication and team work. There is not a game right now that I can remotely think of that gives this kind of feel and pulls it off quite nicely at that.
Matter of fact as it stands cod5 is almost a after thought to me about purchasing it, and Socom has already put R2 on pause from purchasing it aswell. So I can clearly say its fun as heck :)
Oh yea think next week should be another patch for Socom's servers aswell as adding features and some tweaks to the controls like d-pad lean and peek :) Which I love the motion control for that actually.

General Gaming? Has it been deleted?
PSN if functional the same way broadcast TV is functional. Totally respectable. But some of us don't mind paying to get more features.
Cross game invites, solid community infrastructure (gamerzones, rep, feedback),secure, closed network that actively checks for modded boxes, community Calendar.
Not only that, but we have things like the community developer program (who have created the dynamically updated widgets you see in many of our sigs), visible and accessible community managers and full-featured integration with Xbox.com
So no, it's not the same.
PSN is just fine. THe only problem I have with it is theres no game invites. Insted you have to manually find the guy or girl. PLus its free. Which is a blessing if your out of work or just dont have the money for live.

I love how you used a bad example of an online only game and complety ignored a great example of a online only game ala warhawk. You fail buddy.
don't let the fanboys get you down online is fine with the ps3 it doesn't have private chat but it works just as well as xblSolid_Max13
This. If your main focus is online play, then you can't go wrong. And it's free. If you are looking for a more community focused approach, the XBL is where it's at.

ChrnoTrigger
Wrong.
Private chat is one thing, but cross game chat is another. If a bunch of my friends are playing 4 different games, on live I can talk to them all and invite them into something new. Another nice thing about live is gamerscore. You can bring up someone's gamertag (They don't have to be friends, it saves the last bunch of people you played with) and check out what games they have, all of their achievements, etc. PSN has a very simplified version of this, it doesn't have the depth.
Some games like Halo or Forza 2 have replay features, where I can upload screens, or edit replays from online races or games I've played. I don't recall PS3 doing this.
PS3 Online is fineg0ddyX
This one said it best.
If you want to play games online...PS3 does it perfectly.

Better question is why would you judge the PSN just on 1 game.

You really shouldnt have said anything at all then. You said PSN was a laggy mess, but if you would have played Warhawk (or any game through PSN for that matter) you would know that PSN is not as unstabble as people claim it to be. You're right about socom, but you shouldnt use it to judge PSN as a whole.

Why would I judge PSN off an online-only sequel to what was considered the best online shooting experience on the PS2 last generation? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Take everything you know from online gaming and strip it down to "random dude v random dude" cause that's about all you get. CreepyBacon
When I play gears online. All I face is random people. unless I invite someone in a game or setup a game with friends. You can set up games on PS3 games to. You just cant invite people automaticly. You gatta do it the long way.

If you saw the reviews or just listended to peoples comments you would know this wasint the best game to try out the PS3 online. Also if im right this isint the same team that made the good socom games.
Thanks so much again for the replies.Does anyone know any stats like the number of people that play the most popular xbox live game vs the number that play the most popular PS3 online game? I know when I played Halo 3 a lot online, it was the number one game for live and had over half a million at a time.
-Thanks
dude look at what games/exclusives you prefer over another (console) and I'm sure that will solve your problem all in one. Don't base "Internet" on a console that you'll drop a couple of bones on. :|
