PS3 owner here and the future looks grim....

I've owned all of the current gen systems and finally settled with the PS3. Metal Gear Solid 4 and God of War 3 sold me on the PS3 (80GB) and the backwards compatibility with all of my PS1 and PS2 games made the deal sweeter. I am enjoying the multiplats a lot, it's great that both Xbox and Playstation get to share many of the best games of this generation. I am very content with the selection of games and look forward to the PS3 exclusives.

This is system wars though and being happy with what you have is not good enough. Sales are everything unless they aren't. Ratings are everything unless they aren't. Everyone is a hypocrite, me included. With all of that said I'll make my point.

The holiday season makes or breaks consoles. It's happened in the past and it will happen again in the future. This is Sony's last holiday and chance to dramatically increase its market share. It's already October and it does not look like the "year of the Playstation". Sony has been doing a horrible job at marketing the Playstation 3 since it hit the shelves. Sony also designed the console poorly in my opinion, its way too big, the powerful Cell is complex and therefore under utilized, the GPU lacks the power to show off the Cell and the controller appears dated (perception is everything, except when its not). Overall the system is too expensive and bulky.

Why is Sony doing poorly this gen? Expensive console, bad advertising, many of its exclusives are now multiplatform, SKU confusion (20GB, 40GB, 60GB, 80GB, some BC and some not), and supporting the PS2 for too long instead of the PS3.

Unless Sony has a surprise in store for us, Microsoft and Nintendo have this Holiday season locked up. The 360 is cheap (perceived as cheap, but has many hidden costs like hard drive, WiFi, Live), has great library of games and is the system all your friends play online with. The Wii is cheap and will sell plenty of units to gamers and casuals alike.

I think Sony is going to limp through the rest of this generation but will stay profitable, PS2 sales are still massive, the PSP is doing rather well and Sony refuses to dramatically price drop the PS3 to stay competitive.

This doesn't take away any of the enjoyment I have with the system. I think its the best of the 3 but this is system wars so based on sales, exclusives or whatever the argument of the week is, I am on the loosing side.

At this moment, the future of the PS3 as it applies to System Wars looks grim. Maybe something will happen at the Tokyo game show?

I agree but the point was not made clear enough I guess. I am talking in system wars terms. I think the Gamecube was better then the original Xbox but it sold less.

yeah if sony can survive after having a system that 600 and getting outsold 2-1 in 07 in the us. then i think sony can survive the 360 price drop boost. as some have mention sony has the games more exclusives then ms actually.sireclaborn

Well all this year the 360 was selling really bad and ps3 was outselling it in every region for most of the year, but with the huge price drop to 200 dollars it's bound to sell well, this holiday season, but even if ps3 comes third which it wont but anyway lets just say it does, it still wont matter because sony has a lot of 1st and 2nd party studios, so we will still get great exclusives.

You know what you should do, lower your standards for the PS3, and you'll be satisfied. Have that "oh the PSN is free" attitude and you'll justify the purchase of your PS3. Also have that "oh atleast we got a blu ray player" attitude to help ease the failures and short comings. Play B3yond.

When it comes to consoles, I too have been a big supporter of Microsoft. But for myself I don't believe that the Playstation 3 is going to have a grim future. I just think that Sony has held back on making a few decisions, and that it takes them forever to commit. It's not about the games at all, because I'm pretty sure that their line-up for the future will be fun.

I still don't have a Playstation 3. But since I've been a owner of the PSOne, PS2, and still the PSP; I look forward to purchasing the console.

Xbox360 games have not gotten much better while PS3 games have improved a lot and continue to improve.

For Xbox it is just that its life and death, as MS made the Xbox/360 to fend off a Apple type computer/console from taking over the living roon. Sony has a Music conecting dvd downloading, online conection point for other Sony devices, not to mention it keeps its name in touch with the younger people. that is the importance of Sony BRAND which PS3 is selling. Sony has not done a good job of getting its act together but its working on it.

This gen is just beging for Sony and PS3!!! Its coming to an end for Xbox 360 as its third year comes to a close, and year 4 begins. Next year I plan on hearing about the third Xbox launching in 2010!!

Wow Reverse, just when I thought you calmed down with all the extreme PS3 bashing you prove me wrong and do it twice today.

I'll be the first to admit that Xbox Live is superior, but that doesnt make the PSN garbage. The PSN is free indeed, and actually the only reason I'm playing on Live right now is because I made a new Xbox Live ID and got the one free month deal. Sometimes that whole fee isnt so convenient.

And I dont even have an HDTV, so I could care less about using Blu Ray to justify my purchase. Just because it isnt your cup o' tea doesnt mean everyone feels the same way. Lower your standards for the PS3? Please. It's a quality system.

Lets look at upcoming system sellers. Realistically, in order to close the lead it needs about 6 major exclusives (judging by 1 million consoles sold per major exclusive released - a relatively good figure, I'm sure we can all agree).

Resistance 2, LitleBigPlanet and Motorstorm: Pacific Rift all match evenly with the 360s lineup (supposedly, the Ps3 lineup looks stronger to me, but whatever)

Thus, we need 6 major exclusives in 2009 to be sitting pretty.

First major exclusive - Killzone 2, released Febuary 2009. Guerilla seem to have learnt their lesson, and the game seems to actively be in a position to be a major FPS. The multiplayer also looks suh-WEEET.

2nd major exclusive- inFAMOUS, released March 1st. The active Karma system and the realistic response from the NPCs, as well as the cool ass movement and powers make it a system seller.

3rd major exclusive - White Knight Chronicles. The Action RPG format seems rather underdone in the action part, but this one actively seems to have a quite good combat system. And the ability to become a giant White Knight and kick the crap out of Ogres makes it a good looker.

4th major exclusive - Heavy Rain. This thing isn't even a game, its a fully interactive piece of art - a lovingly flowing and masterful piece. Its a game where death doesn't mean game over.

5th Major exclusive - Gran Turismo 5. The Gran Turismo series has always been the innacle of the racing genre, and this one promises to be no different. Its also got photorealistic graphics, baby.

6th Major Exclusive - Massive Action Game. A level of epic scale mixed precision of human intelligence behind each unit gives you an awesome game.

7th Major Exclusive - Tekken 6. Tekken is still king of the fighter games. Nothing has changed there.

8th major exlusive (poosibly 2009) - God Of War III. I don't even need to say why this is a garunteed system seller.

9th major exclusive - Wardevil: Unleash the Beast within. We know nothing about it, but the name is so awesome I had to mention it. Ditto Demons Soul

The Ps3 can't really beat the Wii, but it does have the potential to eclipse the 360 easily.

-MS has more exclusives, almost all of which go to the PC, and the rest go to the Wii. So, you actually have very few exclusives, and fewer decent ones.

-Multiplats are better on the 360 if you like your console whining at you. Meanwhile, Ps3 versions run smoother, look better (don't pull that GS comparrision BS), and allow better control.

I think it would have been better if Sony had released MGS4 in the holiday season.

imo the only reason for concern is the price. The 360 price cut will destroy and dismantle the possibility of the ps3 taking over. It's that simple. I love my ps3 but the writing is on the wall. The vast majority of people don't relate to the positive points to owning a ps3 like slightly better hardware, more reliable hardware, bluray, compatibility with computuer components or some specific game that they would like. Price is the most relatable factor and if you're on any kind of budget you might just get a 360 even if you do know those things and just deal with it

And yet they seem to have spent most of their resources pushing Blu-Ray and SixaxiS. Both are great, but they're far from their strongest points.

It seems like the biggest failure is with the marketting department. They hyped ts benefits as a Blu-Ray player, this allowed Microsoft to say "its nothing but a Blu-Ray player". They hyped Sixaxis, and its sloppily done in a fair few games(Works a treat in others, though). And so on.

yes more of a weird then a bad scheme, i mean last years scheme before the holidays actually had me considering to get one (price was too much for me at the time) but ya there schemes have always been weird, what happend to those squirrel psp commercials?

Um no it won't. I don't really see what is so great about Home, even if it turns out as great as the hype, it won't be considered a part of PSN, but as a game attached to PSN.

Well the price cut for the 360 I don't really think is the push for the 360 like they had hoped. At my walmart the new 60gb is selling better than the $199 core 360. But even then the new 80gb ps3's has been selling more than the 60gb 360. Example we have had a 1 core and 2 60gb 360's sitting for about a week during that time frame we would get in about 1 or 2 80gb ps3's and they would sell before the night was over with. Just a observation of sells at this one store.

You know sometimes a lower price doesn't say anything to consumers but cheap hardware. Like the Sony BR, and Panasonic BR players sell better than the Magnavox BR player that is half the price.

But the future of the ps3 is just fine, with countless great hits coming its way, Home will be awesome, ps store is getting better and better all the time, new life with playstation is cool for just chilling, Internet browser needs some work and since LwPS is powered by google it would be awesome if the browser got a chrome update :) Bluray is still tracking upwards in sales and rentals, I don't even watch reg. movies no more lol. With this holiday season on, the ps3 will be sitting quite well much less if there is a price drop aswell for it next year sometime.

Let talk about the holidays sales. Good luck finding a Wii, they already said it will be a shortage on Wii's. Most people want HDTV for Christmas, some people might even want a Blu-Ray player....this is Christmas we're talking about. Movies sales increase during the holidays along with games. The PS3 will me fine.
