Didn't this only happen in europe? and it's not even $400 there, it's roughly $612 there, did I miss the memo that said the new SKU was $400 in the US?

It's just Sony being tricky with the pricing, when you convert the new price to U.S. dollars it's $564 in Europe and $610 in the UK.

Which means they dont lose as much per console there. I think that the 80gig is going to be the only choice here.

That's what I think too. I doubt Sony would want to lose much more money per console, dropping to $400 would mean they lose a lot of money, especially if the sales don't pick up.
