Jan 2008 Issue of Playstation "The Official Magazine."

"It's official. The Guiness World Records confirmed this in September 2007 when it recognized Standord University's Folding@Home program as "the most powerful distributed computing network in the world." Joining the 200,000 PCs in the program, 670,000 PS3s have hlped push Folding@home's computer power to over a whole whooping petaflop."

But then we say, well what can it do with games. Well, the answer to that is this:

60 players online mp

8 player campain online co-op

With improved graphics over the original.

I think that would be the Gamecube. November 2004 - until it's official death at the end of 2006 when the Wii was released.

I don't know about that, but a client with full DX10 support likely would. DX10 GPUs are pretty robust themselves.

You willing to wager that both the Wii and 360 have Cell Processor's under the hood as well?

pretty much nothing is the translation, since the inception of folding@ home *long before ps3 got into it* no cures for cancer, nothing at all the papers have basically done lil for cancer research except this.....hey we got cancer this is what happens..um yeah thats it.

ReverseCycology

just pitting CPU to CPU....er no.

i have some serious questions about the cells benefits for games. im not saying its crap but, like the emotion engine, i think itll fail to deliver on the hype. its not going to magically push the PS3 into the stratosphere and make everythign else look last gen. the design of the PS3 overall also has to be taken into account.

but when it comes to sheer number crunching, the cell is the daddy. itll pound the wiis, 360s and even high end core 2 quad CPUs into the ground. it just loves number munching, that what it was made for. when u can shift everything to the SPEs the cell just flies. the only down side of it is its not as flexible as a normal CPU. those SPEs arent great at everything. folding @ home have describes it as somewhere between a CPU and GPU. so there is some folding work that the cell is not suitable for.

now if u were to bring the 360s GPU into the equation then things could get interesting. obhiously thats even less flexible than the cell but it could munch through a crap load of data. the 360s GPU is basically a low version of an ATI 2000 series card so its certainly feasible to do use it for folding at home.

finally the wii wouldnt even be in contention. even if all 18 million sold were to get stuck in, it still wouldnt beat the 670,000 PS3s that are doing their thing. the GPU also couldnt be used since thats basically a souped up geforce 2. theyd still get a good bit of work done mind, just not as much.

it would certainly be nice though if MS and ninty allowed a folding client on their machines.

I bet you if the Wii or 360 did this FoldingAtHome, it would've destroyed this PS3 Guinness World Record in every way.

just pitting CPU to CPU....er no.

i have some serious questions about the cells benefits for games. im not saying its crap but, like the emotion engine, i think itll fail to deliver on the hype. its not going to magically push the PS3 into the stratosphere and make everythign else look last gen. the design of the PS3 overall also has to be taken into account.

but when it comes to sheer number crunching, the cell is the daddy. itll pound the wiis, 360s and even high end core 2 quad CPUs into the ground. it just loves number munching, that what it was made for. when u can shift everything to the SPEs the cell just flies. the only down side of it is its not as flexible as a normal CPU. those SPEs arent great at everything. folding @ home have describes it as somewhere between a CPU and GPU. so there is some folding work that the cell is not suitable for.

now if u were to bring the 360s GPU into the equation then things could get interesting. obhiously thats even less flexible than the cell but it could munch through a crap load of data. the 360s GPU is basically a low version of an ATI 2000 series card so its certainly feasible to do use it for folding at home.

finally the wii wouldnt even be in contention. even if all 18 million sold were to get stuck in, it still wouldnt beat the 670,000 PS3s that are doing their thing. the GPU also couldnt be used since thats basically a souped up geforce 2. theyd still get a good bit of work done mind, just not as much.

it would certainly be nice though if MS and ninty allowed a folding client on their machines.

And let's not start with PCs. The main reason PC contribution is low is because most clients on the PC do not support GPU assistance, particularly DX10 GPUs, which are designed to assist in calculations.

[QUOTE="caseypayne69"]But then we say, well what can it do with games. Well, the answer to that is this:

60 players online mp

8 player campain online co-op

With improved graphics over the original.

Yeah because obviously the qualifications for having a good game includes having the most people online at a time  and here i was thinking that gameplay was important silly me:(

Gameplay is important. They are also making 2 full campaigns. 60p with huge maps could be really cool.

Huh? Is 60player online mp really a feather in the cap for the console? Itsn't it like saying "My computer is so powerful that i can download music from the internet in high speed"? 60 player online MP is a function of the servers, not the console.
