[QUOTE="ginazswordsman"][QUOTE="kool-aids"] I think Motorstorm and gears look par to each other, i just wanna see if they can make it look better on the next game they make.

I can't make any sense out of this comparison and I don't understand why people are making it.

Can anyone enlighten me since I'm new here as to why a shooter is being compared to a racing game?

I'd also like to undersand how anyone can come to the conclusion that one looks better than the other since they are two completely different types of game which look completely different and run on two completely different systems.

I don't understand this.

Let me make it clear for you. Good graphics is good graphics. Don't matter what genre it is. Do you agree with that? Second We are not saying One is better than the other. We are saying that both games graphically is the same. Did that clear the misunderstanding for you?

I haven't seen any official January NPD charts, so as of now, your claim of PS3 outselling X360 is a bit dubious.

Frankly, Sony better hope PS3 outsold X360 in January.

I think so.

You are not comparing them to each other, but rather you are saying that both have impressive graphics.

I agree with this. GEOW has great graphics but I think it could use more responsive controls. And Motorstorm also looks great but I think the tracks could use a much larger variety of textures. (game looks great but I'd like to see tracks that actually look different)

Motorstorm needing more than a DVD seems a bit strange when you consider games like PGR 3 and Oblivion are on a single DVD. I thought one of the major complaints about the game was lack of content. What are they using all this space on?

Oh nevermind I just checked Motorstorm to see who developed it and it's a Sony 1st party. If their boss says blue ray is needed then it's their job to make it so. Explains everything.

This thing about the size of games is a funny thing. PS2 Soul Calibur 2 uses more than 4GB, while Xbox Soul Calibur 2 uses a little more than 1GB. Which one is better? Xbox Soul Calibur 2 of course, with better textures and 720p. Anyone got my point? How do i know about the size of them? Very simple, i made images of both. You know, a lot of PS2 games use a thing called dummy files. You can remove the dummy files without messing with the content of the game. What's the purpose of the dummy files? I don't know, but perhaps PS3 games are using the same dummy files. Anyone that know a little about the torrent scene knows what i'm talking about.

Exactly. If you actually had facts and not misguided opinions, you may have actually had a case. Now though, you have totally just shot yourself in the foot. I just can't believe a PS3 owner would do that... (note heavy sarcasm)

The dummy files are actually buffers.

They help to improve load times. You'll also notice that some data is duplicated on the disc in order to increase the amount of sequential reads on the disc and limit the amount of seek time. The dummy files or buffers are there to cut down seeks times by making it easy for the disc reader to distinguish where data on a disk starts in order to cut down seek time.

It's a technique used to improve load times and the streaming of data.

Just for fun, can't resist...

Remember the Blu-Ray format is not needed? MGS, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword all ready uses 2x the capacity of DVD9.

shungokustasu

Which doesn't help the argument that the extra space is needed, as many people have stated it's most likely buffers or duplicated data.  Blu-Ray still is slower which is a major downfall compared to DVD.

Remember the Blu-Ray will flop = PS3 flop?  Now Blu-Ray is selling 3:1 to the HD-DVD

shungokustasu

Movie formats don't really matter much when it comes to video games, but how is it outselling HD-DVD in player or movie sales?  And what time frame is that over, is that the life of the product or one month of sales?  Do you know what the stats you regurgitating actually are?  And can you really compare the sales of a time frame when different products were released for each format?

Remember PS3 is expensive? PS3 is out selling the Xbox360 which is 200 dollars less.
shungokustasu

Again over which time frame and what source?  And does that time frame really matter in the long run, how much did it outsell it?  Which sold more games and accessories in that time frame?

Remember PS3 don't have any games? PS3 Euro Launch will have 30 games at launch plus downloadable content.

shungokustasu

How long has the PS3 been out in other regions?  How many of those games are available, and possibly better on other consoles?  I don't think most people are arguing that PS3 doesn't have any games, but it has less in relation to 360 for example, and very few notable exclusives.

Remember PS3 is less powerful than Xbox360? Oblivion is better looking on the PS3, and Motorstorm looks on par with GeoW

Remember PS3 can do 4d? well, no it can't... Remember when Xbox360 is getting 1 billion consumers?

The truth is finally surfacing about the PS3. The bad stigma it was recieving at launch is now fading away. This war is just getting started.

I don't consider this proof of anything yet. None of those games feature anything significant that would signfy that the extra capacity is needed.

For example, Motorstorm features the exact same graphics in all it's levels and only changes between night and day and different routes. It uses the exact same textures on every single trace avialable. Nothing about Motorstorm suggests to me that it requires the extra storage except perhaps to shorten load times or to store HD quality CGI.

MGS, while impressive when first shown is clearly not the best looking game ever made, at least not from what I have seen so far. Nothing about MGS suggests to me that it requires the extra storage except perhaps to shorten load times or to store HD quality CGI.

Heavenly Sword looks more and more downgraded over time as far as I have seen. Nothing about Heavenly Sword suggests to me that it requires the extra storage except perhaps to shorten load times or to store HD quality CGI.

I'm sure Oblivion has been used as an example before. But that game fits on a DVD9 and it features a larger and more complex game than any of those mentioned. On top of that we see examples of games fitting in smaller and smaller spaces. Compression seems to be where the industry is moving not high capacity.

In addition, larger storage is not truely an advantage in this case unless you are doing large amounts of CGI video on the disk. Which can be wonderful for certain types of games, but not most. Most games have less and less CGI and more real time cut scenes. The trends seems to be toward more interactive cut scenes, and that means real time graphics not CGI.

The disadvantage of using the slower performing transfer rates of BRdisc seems to be a bit of a negative too. Not to mention that it costs more to fill that extra capacity with unique content, and that games like Oblivion are already large enough. In the end the PS3 can only display 512MB worth of data (engine and graphics) so the higher capacity doesn't really affect that much at all.

Remember the Blu-Ray will flop = PS3 flop? Now Blu-Ray is selling 3:1 to the HD-DVDshungokustasu

That's great but I don't see how that really changes anything on the gaming side. Nintendo and MS aren't losing anything if BRdisc wins.

Remember PS3 is expensive? PS3 is out selling the Xbox360 which is 200 dollars less.shungokustasu

I don't see any proof of this yet but I suppose it could be possible.

Remember PS3 don't have any games? PS3 Euro Launch will have 30 games at launch plus downloadable content.shungokustasu

I think most of those games are ports of 360 games which have been shown to look better and or run smoother on the 360 so I can't say I'm too impressed by this point, but you are right the PS3 has a lot more games now and they are good games too if you haven't already played them.

Remember PS3 is less powerful than Xbox360? Oblivion is better looking on the PS3, and Motorstorm looks on par with GeoWshungokustasu

I've read reports that Oblivion on the PS3 looks much worse except for the shader improvement. It's also been stated by Bethesda that the 360 version is also getting that shader improvement. I've read that the PS3 version is not using HDR lighting and runs at a slower frame rate and also has longer load times.

In addition, I don't think it makes any sense to compare a racing game to a shooter. But even if I did I would say that GEOW looks better as a shooter than Motorstorms looks as a racer. Especially since Motorstorm really only features one set of textures for the environment.

Remember PS3 can do 4d? well, no it can't... Remember when Xbox360 is getting 1 billion consumers? :lol:shungokustasu

Well MS does seem to have made progress with XBL memberships, and I think you are misquoting them. MS's said they wanted to bring the gaming industry to 1 billion gamers. That includes Sony and Nintendo so I don't see how you can twist that into something negative.

As for 4D on a technical level 4D has been around since you could rewind in 3D games. Best example I can think of would be Blix on Xbox1. So I think it's safe to say the PS3 can do 4D graphics. (If you assume the 4th dimension is time)

The truth is finally surfacing about the PS3. The bad stigma it was recieving at launch is now fading away. This war is just getting started.
shungokustasu

I think the stigma may be fading away but not exactly for the reasons you listed. I can't list any myself so I think that's just pure speculation.

Hate to quote myself but I think it's safe to say that most of the opinions in the original post are stated as if they are fact but instead are kind of baseless and empty.

Blinblingthing

Being slower is a big issue, and they are more expensive to produce (but that's mostly a publisher issue), the only advantage over DVD is the added space which really doesn't add anything to this generation of gaming.

shungokustasu

Those games you are listing use twice the space of a DVD9 because none of the data on it is compressed. That equates to slower loading times actually and there is no real benefit from doing so (unless you install files onto the hard drive, kind of defeats the purpose of a console though). So what's the point of not compressing your data, nothing really. Just another excuse for Sony to try and sell it's "Blu-Ray" format to us, making us think that HD games really need that space, when in reality we don't. Most of those PS3 games can fit on a DVD9 when if using the right compression method.

Depending on your sources, some will say HD DVD is winning, but you know what? Neither format is really winning as DVD shows no sign of going away, and by the time DVD gets phased out, we will most likely have online distribution of HD content, so Blu-Ray and HD-DVD might not be here to stay.

Yes, the PS3 is expensive, and no it's not selling faster then the 360. It sold more at /launch/ then the 360 did at it's launch but the 360 outsold the PS3 during the Holiday season and as far as I'm aware it still does (in the USA anyway). The PS3 is a very powerful machine but only a moron would argue this whole " Oblivion " issue. The 360 version is getting a patch to make it look about as good as the PS3 version. And from what I've seen the PS3 version doesn't look that much better to begin with. MotorStorm is a good looking game but it's not at the same level as Gear of War, I can actually see pixels on the ground at the vehicle select screen :/
