PS3 to Surpass 360? Here Is What It Will Take

Hey guys, just sharing info as always. What do you guys think?? Discuss. And as always, any blatant fanboyism WILL BE REPORTED!!:x

The Sony PlayStation 3 is now priced at $299 and the Xbox 360 Elite is rumored to drop down to $299 essentially pricing the PS3 and 360 at the same price. I say this because the Arcade model priced at $199 currently sells less than the Pro model priced at $299, which is now the price of the PS3. With all of this said, many people are claiming that the PS3 will now outsell the 360 due to the price cut, but do people take the current lead in to mind? Read More to see what it will take for the PS3 to outsell the 360 worldwide this generation.

Below I have posted how much the PS3 must outsell the 360 each month, on average, to surpass the sales of the 360 in said amount of time.

• One Year: 680,000 A Month
• Two Years: 340,000 A Month
• Three Years: 227,000 A Month
• Four Years: 170,000 A Month
• Five Years: 136,000 A Month
• Six Years: 113,000 A Month

All in all, sales of either console do not matter as long as they consistently sell to the point where one does not end up like the Dreamcast, but for the people who claim that this price drop will magically put the PS3 ahead of 360, think again.

Wow, that's actually almost depressing to look at I bet. Its possible in 4-6 years because of Japan an Eurpoe to some extent but this basically ends the idea that the PS3 will get 2nd in any relevant period of time.

Its not like sales won't fluctuate for the 360 you know.

I still remember, fondly, of the claims in which it was stated that PS3 would overtake 360's total sales by the end of 2007.

On topic - It would be pretty much impossible for PS3 to outsell 360 by that much per month.

I think this is more of a keep-the-whiners-quiet-feature than the console-selling one.

Guess we'll be playing xbox720, ps4 by then. Anyone expects a $600 PS4 from Sony? I wouldn't put it past them. themyth01

It is possible. The opening proves that. How likely is it however?

Just a heads up though. You never know what could happen. Take this I remember it was around mid or early 2008, and the ps3 was down around 12-13 million to the 360. Now it's down 7 million. With a price cute, and if sales were to spike by 40%-%60. It could be possible in 2 years, which would be 2011-2012. A console gen doesn't end, at least not this one till at least 2014 (just throwing up the number in the air) . At the long term, maybe not now, but 2-3 years the ps3 could surpass the 360, and it will still count.

Well there are a lot of people out there that have been wanting a ps3 since launch but haven't had the money....and plus this is the slim model, not just any ps3, i even think the slim will surpass even the wii in sales, at least for a while, oh and now the ps3 has a good library, so there's no reason not to sell great.

I think we don't really know, so we have to be open to the possibility. How much has the wii sold in almost 3 years? What if the ps3 becomes the most wanted console (pretending) it could sell 60 million in the next 3 years, and that would be a turn around. To simply say it's impossible is a stupid comment, to say it's unlickely is more concrete.

What does launching a year earlier have to do with anything? Dreamcast launched a year earlier, and got destroyed by ps2.

Sorry but, looking at the opening which uses actual evidence, how likely is the PS3 to pass the 360? I'm just not understanding the logic, I'm sure there are a lot of people who wanted a Wii or a 360 but refuse to buy them at their current price. Baiscally, they exist but its not an argument. And this great library. What exactly is so great about it that people couldn't pass it up? I'll get ripped up but the PS3 library is a carbon copy of the 360 library bar some exclusives. I don't see how the library is that big a factor. Its sold not great even with the "great" library, what has truly changed to overcome this wide a gap besides a hundred dollars?

Why would you even want to buy a 360 over a PS3 now? Halo? If you buy a PS3, you get everything, internet browser, bluray player, amazing exclusives, Home, etc etc. Face it, 360 is an overpriced last gen dvd player without the capability to play BD movies, etc etc. The PS3 was built with the future in mind, once a game company utilizes all 9 processors in the PS3, you'll see some serious whooping being done in the graphical department by the PS3. The prospect that the PS3 has the type of games and appeal to sell at wii levels is rather crazy honestly.

Impossible sounds more realistic than unlikely because I can actually say that the PS3 will not start selling at wii levels. The simple existance of the 360 and the Wii prevents that. The PS3 lacks the software to spur the type of sales it needs to sell at that level and its most likely never going to get it. the user bases are split among gamers, perception is split. Its impossible for the PS3 to sell 50 million units in less than 3 years, this isn't even an opinion, this is almost undebatable fact being held back by slight almost none existant coincidence. Its not unlikely, its almost unheard of.
