Link to a news story. The price of Blu-Ray players have actually began to increase since the death of HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray costs, April 2 2008

A very intresting quote from the story :

Later this month, Blu-ray movies will carry a new slate of advanced features, most notable being the ability to connect to the Internet. However, the only Blu-ray player that will be able to access these features is the Playstation 3. This means that not only will they be unable to access Web-enabled features in the future but they also cannot receive firmware upgrades.

I'm very glad at this point that I decided to give up on the 360 after my 2nd Xbox death and go with the PS3. I love the features that the PS3 brings, both my wife and I are enjoying Blu-Ray, and the gaming line-up for the coming year looks very strong.

The PS3 is on the way up, and thats good for people who love both gaming, and movies.

This is something so many people don't know about what the PS3 is capable of delivering to it's customers. I feel that once this becomes common knowledge the PS3 is going to sell like crazy.

$400 is very competitively priced to other players that only play Blu-Ray movies. Add to that that the PS3 is actually the best Blu-Ray player available on the market at the present time, because of its ability to update firmware, and access enhanced Blu-Ray features like web access.

Add to that it also is a powerful HD gaming machine, plays all PS1 games and depending on the model PS2 games, has a built in web browser, can file share with PC's, can store data for video and audio file playback, links with a PSP for remote play, and has a free online gaming service.

Sounds like a good deal to me.

I wouldnt be surprised is Sony had jaked the price of a BR drive so that all other manufacturers had boost the price too and then the PS3 would look even better.

Of course blu-ray players are going up in price. Now that there's no competition Sony has us right where they want us, with no other option but to submit to their will.

Profile 2.0 players like the PS3 are nice, but Blu-ray technology can not currently survive in the price range in which it is advertised by companies like Sony, Samsung, etc. People simply can not afford such expensive technology, which is why DVD technology became so cheap so fast. Many of the movies that are worth buying only come as upscaled versions of their original definition film on Blu-ray, so what's the point? However, these companies continue to sell these Blu-ray movies at ridiculous prices. Go online and buy yourself a quality Oppo Upconverting DVD player (that comes with a HDMI cable) for a $150 and watch all of your DVD collection in beautifully upscaled 1080P. That is a far better option and it gives you access to more than the currently crappy selection of Blu-ray movies with a lot of the same content and extras.

Good for Sony. They should make a lot of money because of this. But if you could please bring the games, that would be nice for us PS3 owners.

Let me make a guess.

It's not that good of a player. The only reason it was the "best" for so long is because all of the others truly sucked.

No one said it was the best, nor have I ever witnessed any stuttering of any BR movie.

With it's great performance and ability to upgrade via firmware to support new features like Java interaction in profile 2.0, it certainly doesn't "suck", even compared to the newer players coming out.

Where have you been? People all over this forum have been screaming about it being the best since it came out. It's performance is not "great". It's very much a first-gen piece of hardware for blu-ray playback. Also, that whole "it can upgrade" argument has got to go. Most blu-ray players can ALSO get firmware upgrades.

And actually, yes it does suck compared to the newest BR players coming out this year.

This forum doesn't equate to A/V enthusiats. It you're are looking for that, visit AVSforum.com, where the hardcore videophiles lable PS3's BR playback as "excellent" and still loads movies faster than any player currently on the market.

Plus, the "upgrade" argument doesn't have to go....

And exactly how will it "suck"? Please give me your technical reason for your opinion.

It wasnt Toshiba that paid them off, it was Microsoft they gave them 100 million. As for Werner it was way out of their price range, there was no way they could get them.

no stand alone blu-ray player is going to be gettin firmware updates soon, non of them is also going to be able to get the new update as well that lets you download extra content for blu-ray movies any time soon. i dont know what people you are talking about - but i hav heardly people saying "the ps3 is one of the best blu-ray players" which it is - it works without a charm and i have not heard or seen any problems with it. the blu-ray aspect of it does what it is ment to do - play Blu-ray movies.

PS3 is probably one of the biggest steals considering all it has
