I found this to be very interesting. I own a PS3 and one of my brothers has a 360. Every single game I own on the system with the exception of one goes as high as 720p. My brother's 360 collection almost entirely goes to 1080i or p. I found this very surprising.

I started checking this out because I noticed that Uncharted 2 was only 720p. I would have expected that one of all the PS3 exclusives to go 1080p. It also runs at 30 frames per second.

Why are so few PS3 games in 1080?

1080p on 360 is usually just upscaled (360 has a hardware upscaler if I remember correctly). Both consoles have a few XBLA/PSN games and a few retail games that do 1080p natively though.

Graphics intensive games like UC, Gears, Killzone, ME, etc... can't handle 1080p 60fps with console hardware.

Thanks for th info. I'm not knowledgable in the ways of graphics. All I did was look at the back of the boxes.

1. Upscaling doesn't make one shread of difference.

to answer your question, the 360's GPU has a built in upscaler that automatically lets every 360 game upscale to 1080p, and doesn't cost any performance.

The Ps3 doesn't have this, so Devs actually have to waste some performance to upscale games to 1080p. And, in some cases, to get the ps3 game to run at 1080p the native resolution gets a downgrade. On the Ps3 esp., It's always best to run games at their native res.

Yeah no problem, here is an article about the upscaler here.

PS3 not having an upscaler turned out to be a problem for some people with older 1080i/480p/480i only tvs though.

I think uncharted 2 will upscale to 1080p if you uncheck 480p,720p,1080i, and just leave it at 1080p. I know it works with some games, but not all of them.

Since we're on the subject, does Motorstorm Apocalypse run at a "native" 1080p resolution? I know for a fact that it runs in 1080p (had it not would've been for MGS4, and GT5, I would've assumed that all 1080p games on the ps3 was native), but is it a native resolution?

PS3 cant even do Crysis 2 in HD, unlike 360, so how could it do 1080p

That would only be possible on 360 hardware, that does Crysis 2 in HD, PS3 is subHD

got this from beyond3d.... So I guess its not true 1080p, but still higher than 720p.

Motorstorm Apocalypse = 1280x1080 (dynamic) 2D, 1024x720 3D (MLAA)

If you're referring to the games boxes, then it just shows upscaled resolutions. Native resolutions can be anywhere from sub-HD to 1080p.

You can set both the 360 and PS3 to solely 720p, if you don't want anything upscaled (though your TV will likely implement a form of upscaling).

Yeah, it does that if you check 1080i or 1080p and uncheck 720p. It's jus there to support old CRT HDTV's that only did 1080i and not 720p, I think they render at 960x1080 (or something close to that) and then upscale.

You do know that the ps3 have more native 1080p games out there than the 360, right?:|

The 360 also have sub HD games as well, All of the Halos this gen, and Alan Wake comes to mind, and if I'm not mistaken, wasn't FF13 sub HD on the 360?

I could go into a whole thing but I wont.

the 360 has far superior upscaling capabilities then the ps3 FAR superior so all games are upscaled to 720p and 1080i/p resolutions but those are not the games native resolutions.

Fun fact:according to the resolution list at beyond3d the 360 has more native 720p games then the ps3..the ps3 has like 3 more 1080p games *mostly small little games*

You can dress it up to fit the acceptance of lems all you want, but the fact is: the ps3 have more 1080p native games.

lol.

Both versions of Crysis 2 are sub - HD, the 360 version has a slightly higher res but the ps3 version has more AF.

The only console games that run at rue 1080P (1920x1080) are arcade games that are high in graphics. Most consoles games run around 720P (1280x720) and some are even lower.

Neither MGS4 nor GT5 are 1080p natively... There are no proper 1080p games, just some islly sports games and arcade games

xbox 360 uses hardware upscaling whereas the Ps3 uses software upscaling, that's why all games on the 360 upscale to 1080p, not so many on the Ps3, hardware upscaling is just better that's all.

when sub-hd resolutions starts to pop-in its a sign of the increasing need of new consoles.

its pretty **** up to have a 1080p 40'' LED TV and play at 1024x600
