PS3 Won't Catch 360 until 2009...if not later

The 360 is selling a steady 8 million each year. By the end of 2008 it should have around 24 million units sold. Why does everyone keep saying the PS3 is going to catch the 360 when it would have to sell 16 MILLION units in ONE year? In other words, PS3's second year is going to have to match how the Wii did it's first year. comstrikeiscool

The PS3 has, as I understand, sold just under 9 million units worldwide, and is currently selling at a faster rate than the 360 in many areas. This, plus the fact that next year many of PS3's most anticipated titles will be released/announced will likely raise sales. But who said this is a sprint, not a marathon? I agree with this dude. I also like to add that there are alot of PS2 gamers waiting to jump ship and maybe it's the established franchise like GT5, Tekken 6, GT5 & FF13 that will cause them to buy a PS3 this year or a price drop which will surely happen around Christmas time.

360 sales have slowed down in Europe and PS3 is rapidly catching up, all this leaves 360 with is the lead it has in America which will start to diminish by the end of this year.

you hit it on the head...the words magic, 2008, and ps3 all in one sentence...no but seriously. 2008 can be an awsome year for the ps3. itll never win in NA, but then again the world doesnt revolve around the us. it revolves around antartica.

Its pretty simple math to figure out how many consoles Sony will have to sell to catch the x360 by the end of 2009. You will get a rough number to go by, but not an accurate number because you have to predict the impact of sales coming with price drops in the next 2 years for both consoles.

Imo, we wont see a Premium package from Sony(BC) and MS(HDD) with a mainstream price (Sub $199) until 2009. Consoles havent been this pricey since the Saturn launched early for $399 and its going to take longer to see these consoles true saturation witha mainstream price.

I don't think the PS3 will catch up on the 360 in 2008, but it will probably close the gap significantly.

With what is happening with the 360 slow sales and the increase of PS3 sales it is very possible that M$ will be back where it was before (same place as the XBOX was).

Then if M$ releases another SKU with a high definition disc drive it could kill the M$ game console completely.

I don't think the PS3 will catch up on the 360 in 2008, but it will probably close the gap significantly.

Yeah, the PS3 would have to sell better than the Wii did last year AND the X360 would have to sell NO consoles in order for Sony to catch them. Its not going to happen. Sony cannot make up a difference of 8M consoles in a year unless they were to drop the price of the PS3 to 199.00. This is assuming that the sales of the X360 is around 15-16M and sells of the PS3 are 8-9M.lhughey

wow you and Blackbond are all over me for not having a PS3 yet :? So what now I have to purchase PS3 in order to say its a good console. I'm getting a PS3 you guys don't have to worry about it, you see I bought the PS1 when MGS launched, I bought the PS2 when MGS2 launched and I'm gonna buy the PS3 when MGS4 launches, its a matter of principle for me.

PS3 is definitely a quality console with enough features & titles to warrent a purchase, right now I'm happy with my PS2. now will you guys stop riding me about purchasing a PS3... oh wait that came out wrong :shock:

LOL fanboy logic makes me sick. Most people dont equate more features a bad thing and a reason not to buy something. And before you scream hyprocrit the PS3 was just to expensive to compete at launch. If they launched with a version at 400$ they wouldnt be in the perdicimate they are in.

Maybe because it sold 6-9 million in its first year without any killer aps? I don't know but considering its killer aps are not even released (but are about to) the sales might sky rocket. I don't think PS3 will catch up to 360 in 2008 though I think 2009 is a safe bet. Considering by 2009 PS3 will probably have MGS4, FF13 and FF13 Versus (big maybe there), God of War 3, and othergames like Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, maybe another R&C, Infamous, etc.
