Actually that last price drop is showing some results. In fact I'll buy the PS3 now that there's a decent price drop.

And jeez, deja vu, how many topics are people going to do like this? It's just pointing out the obvious.

At this point, I think the PS3 is a financial failure on Sony's part. I think at this point, they are just hoping to break even so that investors don't castrate them.

every new tech item goes down in price quickly.

the point is, for 400 you arent getting the same machine you would for 600 a year ago. so its not even a price drop, its a different version of the system.

Funny in one thread it's a $200 price drop. In another, it's not a price drop because it's a new product with gimped features.

Now, I dont favor any particular system, but, being the case, since when has a game system ever been released for $600, and had new technology as part of the system for a sign. cheaper price than a comparable electronic device?

You cant just bash Sony for your points without atleast looking at the other side of the coin...

The 3DO launched at $700 and received multiple significant price drops in short succession. And we all know how that turned out.

The PS3 has the same destiny.

I don't have to read up on it, I'm 30 years old and I had a 3DO. I also know that the 3DO has no established userbase nor an in house developed games with a history of several mulitmillion selling titles. In addition the inflation adjusted price of the 3DO would be $1,150, not $600 like the PS3. They aren't even close to being the same price.

And save your fanboy comments, I bought a launch PS3, got tired of waiting and sold it to upgrade from a premium 360 to an Elite 360. I'll just call out absurdities when I see them.

The PS3 goes down in price as such as the one in Canada. Because the company cares more about its costomers more. Putting it as the same price as the PS3s in the United States. Its gone down in price also because its becoming cheaper for the company to make the PS3 and they can lower down the price. If you knew anything about economics you would understand.

you are right, but we are dealing with different types of electronic equipment. Phones, TV's can go down quick in price because of competition and new models that continue to come out.

the iPhone was too expensive, people didn't buy it cause it was lacking anything, it wasjust too expensive, there are thousands of cell phones that you can buy instead, same thing with a tv, if its too expensive, people have an option to buy another brand for less money.

but video game systems are on a whole other level. if you are aSony fan, you don't have much choice but to either buy the system or wait for it to go down in price. there are only TWO other viable systems and all 3 are really different when it comes to audience and games. if the system was selling better, you would never hear about a price drop.

video game systems that lower the price twice in one year is crazy, like Sony said,Sony fans would buy the system even if it didn't have games, and some have but not enough for developers notto be worried about the installed base. didn't Sony slash the price in Japan before the system even came out? Sony new the price was going to be a problem, but they had no choice, they really wanted to push that damn b-ray.

A question for Sony and Nintendo fans......if Microsoft cut the price 2 or more times in its first year, wouldn't you guys say that the system is having problems? or would you say that Microsoft is just doing it for the fan base? personally I think all of you would murder 360 fans about it. I mean jesus, you guys almost ripped 360 owners a new one because of a power brick, which I think was one of the silliest things to argue or debate about.

This is more like what has been happening for the most part PS3 has only outsold 360 just a few weeks here and there since it has released this is what it has been for the most part. Notice in Sony own home cou ntry it barly beats 360. I USA the 360 SLAUGHTERS Sony. And for TOTAL it is a pretty big margin

true, but remember, you have many choices of HD-DVD players you can buy, so they have to keep it at a good price to compete, plus new versions will be out, so the price HAS to go down.

Sony competes with Nintendo and Microsoft, not much choice there, and to have to lower the price twice just to stay competitive with the other two can't be a good thing.

Sony will be fine, but I think its nice that they don't dominate like last generation, hopefully we will have a nice even split between the 3, then everyone wins.

I was waiting for someone to point this out.

360's been out for about 2 years and has sold 11+ million, even with Halo.

PS3's been out for about 1 year and has sold 5+ million...

How does that equate to the PS3 sales are "DISMAL" or Sony's "desperate"?

Aside from that, people need to wake up to the business or retail.

The holiday season starts and companies introduce cheaper prices or cheaper merchandise to consumers. That's the business of retail.

If a manufacturer wants to boost sales of any item (especially seen in electronics and cars) they will lower the price, bring out a newer model or possibly scrap it all together.

Does that mean that Samsung is desperate when they release a new version of HD tv's at a cheaper price?

Is Apple desperate when they release a new and cheap Ipod?

Cost cuts do not equal desperation. It equals buzz and boost in sales.

At the time the HDA1 was released the only other HD-DVD player was the RCA unit and it was priced the same. The only competition it received was six months after launch which was a high end Toshiba unit capable of 1080p and the Xbox add-on which required a 360.

The 3DO launched at $700 and received multiple significant price drops in short succession. And we all know how that turned out.

The PS3 has the same destiny.

The PS3 goes down in price as such as the one in Canada. Because the company cares more about its costomers more. Putting it as the same price as the PS3s in the United States. Its gone down in price also because its becoming cheaper for the company to make the PS3 and they can lower down the price. If you knew anything about economics you would understand.FatCat360

I call bull on everything you said, Sony does not care about you, if they could charge $800 for the system and it was selling, well then $800 is what it would be until people didn't buy the system anymore. A company doesn't just lower the price just because its cheaper to make a system, you also have to take into account how many people are actually buying the system, and price the system accordingly.

How much does the Wii cost too make? about 100 to 150 bucks? and they are selling it for how much? 250? if nintendo really cared they would have had a price drop by now since they are selling well and making a lot of money, so why not show love and give a small price cut and have even more people buy the system? but wait? care about customers! hell no! the system is selling so it won't go down.

still a strange world, this year is not done, so maybe Nintendo will have a price cut, but I promise you its not because they care for you.

[QUOTE="ramey70"]Toshiba's HDA1 HD-DVD player went from $599 to less than $300 in less than a year.LEGEND_C4A

true, but remember, you have many choices of HD-DVD players you can buy, so they have to keep it at a good price to compete, plus new versions will be out, so the price HAS to go down.

Uh....you just said,

"HD-DVD players need to have their prices cut to compete" and

"Sony has to lower the price twice to stay competitive".

With other HD-DVD players and other consoles, respectively. The number of competitors do not matter (e.g., as long as one guy does things better, everybody else has to respond), so what's the difference?

Those numbers are not that close like you say. I really thinkexGen charts sre more closer. Here look.
